I think car review channels put too much emphasis on performance when reviewing vehicles. The average driver doesn't care about 0-60 and sports car handling. There are cars for that. @tonysterbenc10 ай бұрын
No, they're not following the Lexus playbook, in multiple ways. Lexus started with a dedicated free-standing, all-new dealer network where anyone who wanted in had to agree to unprecedented standards of customer service. The cars themselves were built with astounding quality, and when the first LS's got a defective third brake light, they recalled every single car and gave a loaner -- unheard of at the time. And right up front, they created the best parts network in auto history, unlike Genesis that sometimes leaves you waiting a month for a part. No similarity.

The proper way to drive a BMW or M-B is to lease one, 3 years maximum. After that all the maintenance nightmares are inherited by the buyer who wants to try to impress others with his expensive car. Been there, done that; I'll stick with Japanese and Korean reliability and low cost of ownership.
@philhenderson35162 жыл бұрын
This is a great product but it didn't really evolve much from its past former self. Sure, it's got sharper looks now and a much nicer interior, but the price has crept up so much that it forewent its most appealing quality, bang for buck! The prior gen G80, while more austere and conservative, and obviously not as lavish on the inside, was a much better value proposition. It was $15K cheaper than this new one fully loaded, and you could get discounts on it. I get that Genesis has surpassed its competition in many metrics, but its unique trait (going back to its former Hyundai Genesis roots) was offering value above all, differentiation and reliability. The value quotient is no longer present. I do love the fact that they're trying to carve their own path while retaining a purist soul (RWD platform, V6 turbo engines + electric, and pride in their products being fully assembled in its home country unlike some Japanese brands I could mention), but if separating itself as an independent brand meant duplicating their price of entry, it'll end up alienating potential customers more so than attract. They have a great formula and very compelling products, but the brand equity still doesn't warrant the premiums they want to charge.

Genesis looks like a great alternative to the more entry level American or German luxury offerings. Of course, there isn't really a lineage or brand mythos for the brand to fall back but, it's cool seeing these manufacturers rapidly evolve their offerings. The era of the end of combustion cars has been a lot more exciting than the boring stuff we got in the 2000s and 2010s due to the recession. Mazda for instance is a really standout brand with their more normal people oriented cars being so incredibly refined for their price points.

TOO BAD. I was rooting for Hyundai, but they always come up short in the tuning department (transmission, suspension, etc). That's where the Germans have put the extra work in. You'll pay more for a German brand, but anyone that has ever developed anything knows that the final 10% of development / refinement / working-out-of-bugs requires WAY more work (in terms of efficiency) than the first 90%. Unfortunately, Hyundai stops at the 90% mark -- which is fine for most people. But if you are the type that expects the car to perform at that last 10% you probably won't be happy.

Makes me think of the sonata n line. The built a hardcore cruiser car and tried to inject some sport into after the fact. Then they ultimately ran into a price ceiling. Because it seems like it needs some major changes under the skin to turn this into a sport model.

I’ve got a G80 Luxury and the interior build quality and materials used matches or rivals cars at 2-3x the price. From every button being machined aluminium and so effectively damped you can’t hear a thing to the natural exposed wood, soft nappa leather literally encases you and the suede headliner really sells the luxury fantasy. The interior is a textural heaven. The drive is responsive, quick, quiet, and nimble enough to blend sporty, comfort and GT all together. It’s the best of all worlds. Problem with German cars is after a while they begin to rely on the fact you’ll fall in love with the badge enough to ignore the overuse of cheap plastic and hard scratchy composite products- it’s eye level luxury only. I’ve owned Jaguars and BMW’s and went to purchase a Merc before the Genesis- needless to say they all pale in comparison.

In terms of fun, I thought the 2022 G70 Sport model was supposed to take care of that and the G80 was if you wanted more luxury and room.

That's true...but Mark is a notorious Hyundai hater (think it has to do with a dealership experience he had). So hating on Hyundai / Kia / Genesis has been a common behavior..

Funny how it's only 5k$ more for the equivalently trimmed BMW where you live. Here in Germany, if you want to have all the same stuff put in your BMW or MB, you will have to spend around 30k€ more... That was one of the reasons why I didn't really have to decide and I recently ordered the G80 for around 73k€ (an MB equivalent would have been almost 104k€) Only sad thing is that we don't get to have the 3.5l V6 here.

Have a previous gen G80 5.0. I don't care whether they hit it out of the park with this or any other car. I'll not buy another Genesis until they're operating a separate service center from Hyundai.

Which one? The BMW vs g80. I think with the g80 you would suffer less back problems over the life of the car ownership experience when it comes to maintenance and service. Pretty sure with the BMW you would be bent at 90 degrees everytime you went in for service.

I hope Genesis doesn’t fall into the habit of chasing the Germans. They don’t need to throw out features just to say it’s available on the car if the features aren’t well thought out. Maybe I’m getting old but I would like a luxury car to be quiet, stylish, comfortable, and reliable. I think Genesis has a niche to fill since Lexus has gotten lazy with their product offerings and relying heavily on their reputation for reliability.

I thought the first generation G70 was one of the best interiors in the entire class. They're taking that to a whole new level with these next generation G70 and G80, especially for what you get for the money.

@@Fasty2107 I measure luxury cars. However going by db levels is not completely accurate because that only measures spl and not frequency. Which is where the g80 is next level.
