To be honestly they really haven’t. They screwed themselves by trying to upscale Hyundai with the Genesis and Eqqus then turning one upscale model into a brand. They also have a horrible dealer network and most of them are connected to Hyundai which buyers looking for luxury cars won’t stop at. They needed to go the Honda/Acura route and make a luxury division from the start. Acura was so successful it was outselling Mercedes and BMW when it came out, so then Toyota copied with Lexus and Nissan copied with INFINITI, all solely due to how successful Acura was as a Japanese luxury brand. So Genesis really hasn’t done anything. They make beautiful cars for sure but no one is buying them because no one knows where to buy one and the general public doesn’t know what Genesis is.

Another great review. I'm not crazy about that humongous grill. The flip side of the depreciation problem is affordability on the used car market. I bought a 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 in February and got a really quiet, luxurious, well-appointed car with over 20,000 miles left on the factory warranty for just under $22k. I love the torque, effortless acceleration and sound of the naturally aspirated 3.8L V6. It's the quietest car I've ever owned and has a terrific 15-speaker sound system. The clarity and sound stage is awesome and the bluetooth connection is much faster than the one in my 2014 Accord. It's not as agile as my Accord, so I totally agree about the handling. It feels like a big car and doesn't corner as responsively as I'd like. There's a little creak from the panoramic sunroof on cold mornings with the shade open, but you can close it and the noise goes away. That's my only gripe. Despite the lack of premium dealer experience, the build quality is excellent. According to CR, the Hyundai and Genesis brands are more reliable and have better customer satisfaction ratings than Honda, Acura, Cadillac and most other brands. It's a solid value all around.

Had the previous generation Genesis G80. I used the car for business and put 189,000 miles on it. My experience went a little like this. I replaced the transmission twice. (The first one went at 102K, yes that 2k after the warranty expired). The head unit failed and the dealership wanted $6k to replace it. Constant issues with the throttle body. The battery constantly died locking me out, even after replacing the unit twice, it did little to fix the issue. The headlight washers constantly broke. Up to 60-70k miles, the thing was a dream. But buyers beware. These are great lease vehicles but please save yourself the headache and don't equate this to anything close to something like a Lexus. at 189,000 the car felt like a diesel truck in terms of drivetrain refinement. If you read up to this point, might as well hear the worst of it. One word... depreciation. Purchased the car for 48K USD and walked away with a $3300 trade-in. Lesson learned. Don't get me wrong. A company working this hard to challenge the status quo deserves respect but buyers beware. LEASE ONLY. My $.02.

What, are the folks at Genesis crazy and made the mid size sedan better than the full sized one? Absolute nonsense. Any of the 6L E Class hybrid Mercs are probably even more quiet than this due to the superior powertrain. Volvos are insanely quiet too. DB count does nothing. A single variable test is incapable of determining the noise level of a cars cabin. I was anticipating getting a GV80 but, like your experience, my dealership experience from just discussing the vehicle did not go as I expected. I decided not to wait and instead got a 2021 BMW X5 xDrive 45e. The BMW drives amazingly, but has a very small 2nd row. Perhaps in 3 years Genesis will have worked out their dealership experience and I will consider them.

Have they fixed the defects in the hybrid BMWs yet? Heard it was an issue. Come to think of it, seems to be an issue with a lot of hybrids and new EVs from traditional ICE manufacturers.

This is why I watch you. People don’t realize the dealer experience and depreciation is a big turn off. I see everyone in comments going on about the G70 and how it’s a better bet than a 3 Series or C Class but many haven’t actually bought or leased new ones. I have and seriously looked at a G70 and G80. Dealing with a Hyundai dealership can be excruciatingly aggravating. I hope and pray it gets better but between that and the depreciation it’s a solid no for me still.

A+ on the cinematography, music, editing and overall content (of course). You always have superb videos... but this one is among the best of 2020. The music gave it a Hitchcock feel. When you say the architecture is exclusive to Genesis and Kia can't share, does that also include the K900?
@JDubbs074 жыл бұрын
The current K900 is actually derived from the Stinger's platform, which itself is a derivation of the DH Genesis platform. We'll have to see if Kia is actually excluded - I'm sure they'd like to use the new platform for a Mohave replacement.

The G80 stomps the Lexus... The ES is filled with hard plastics, its infotainment is crap as usual, it seems its quite heavy, and built on McPherson strut FWD platform... The least noble of configurations for a premium sedan. The G80 on the other hand ticks all the boxes. The interior is lauded. Some even saying is on par with Porsches on fit and finish. Nicely padded materials all over the place. RWD and fully independent suspension, so, better driving dynamics than the ES at least. Longer warranty and quite a decent track reliability wise. And its quite a lot more exclusive right now since its not selling as much as the competition. The G80 just stomps the ES. The ES probably has very little aspects in favour. The hybrid is quite efficient and refined. But you can get that from a Camry too. And being a simpler car will probably make it a more reliable and economic car to own. One of those double wishbone arms in the G80 probably cost more than the entire front suspension on the Lex.

We went from last gen G80 to Volvo XC90. Absolutely love the XC90, would be an easy re-lease, however, I do miss the quietness of the 80, so we may get lured back in the next two years, maybe to the SUV or even back into the G80. For us, it was the level of luxury, refinement for the dollar and lack of brand recognition/public perception. I place a high value on Genesis' ability to provide higher levels of luxury while laying low. The Bowers system in the XC90 is incredible, but the Lexicon is no slouch either and the isolated interior certainly helps. Amazing review as always.

This new G80, despite the added power of the 3.5T and reduction in weight, is slower to 60mph and the 1/4 mile when compared to the 2018-2020 G80 Sport with the 3.3T. That car weighed 300lbs more than this new one. Not sure if the new transmission tuning has something to do with it, or if this new engine's combustion is being restricted for emission purposes. Could also explain why Hyundai/Kia opted not to feature this engine in the G70 and Stinger. Perhaps it needs extra tuning and is not yet ready for prime time performance like the 3.3T. Any thoughts on this, Savagegeese?

Did he just say you will lease it because of the "depreciation".... Okay after selling cars for a while i realized Americans have a hard time understanding how this wokrs.... a Lease is a rental agreement in which you agree to pay the Depreciation of the vehicle and some build in interest while the vehicle is in your hands. There for if a car depreciates faster then other cars you are by NO MEANS ESCAPING THAT, YOU ARE THE ONE PAYING IT. Also because it's a new vehicle in depreciates most under the lease.....

Am I missing something? Isn't the more likely cross-shoppers of the G80 are Lexus, Acura or more specifically replace the market share where Infiniti use to hold? Its odd that Mark and Jack would mostly focus on the comparisons with German brands. To me, G80 is trying to compete with the Japanese car makers, by infusing in the more traditional comfort-oriented luxury car (e.g. Lexus ES) with a flavor of german-feel (rear-wheel biased drive).
