Nice review! This car gives me hope for the future of BMW. It shows they still know how to make a proper sports sedan. I firmly believe this is a better direction for the brand than any number of gargantuan SUV’s or forgettable FWD compact MPV’s. Hopefully this car can help remind people how good a good sedan really can be. I’m so glad it’s still a glorious inline 6 and not another highly boosted 4 pot. I’ve only ever owned 6 cylinder BMW’s, they just seem to have way to make that configuration of drivetrain work so seamlessly well, better than any other manufacturer. As the ex owner of a 335i, I can concur that M3 vs the fastest non-M 3-series model argument is spot on and has been valid for a couple of generations now. The real world usable performance is still more than adequate, it’s a more comfortable vehicle overall, more discreet and of course it costs a decent amount less. Make no mistake the M3 is a highly desirable well engineered machine and definitely has a significant performance edge in the right hands, but the 340i sounds like it’s still the one I would pick.

Great review Jack - I'm an owner of a 25 m340... in the past couple years I've flipped between so many vehicles its stupid. Golf R, 8Y RS3, integra type s, GRC, X3M comp.... Some of those were definitely a mistake to own but I didn't lose too much money during the golden era of covid car values. Regardless, the m340 is truly well designed. BMW's tech is best in class, the seats are great, ride quality feels supple, and the tuning of the b58/zf may be the best daily driver drivetrain I've ever owned - seriosuly its so good it makes the car. It has great power but it is soooo smooth. The ZF is so much better to drive around on the street, than dsg units found in vw and audi. All that said, this thing IS a compromise - its not going to tickle your car guy brain. It doesn't have that IT factor. But if you're tired of dailying a stiff or special car, this is really a fantastic option.

That red ring at top of steering wheel is gimmicky and ugly. The fact that you mention the competition and include the caddy ct5 and Acura but not the g70 3.3tt is BS! You guys never tested the sport prestige g70 with the brembos and adaptive suspension is also BS. I have one and it drives awesome and yes I’ve driven the Acura, Caddy, and Audi. The genesis came in 15k less than the equivalent BMW. (yes the g70 lacks the ambient lighting and dash screen but to me that’s not worth that much) the g70 also doesn’t have any electric motors or auto start stop which is a plus to me. I’ve had Audi and bmw in the past so I’m not a genesis fanboy or new to driving sport sedans. I still just can’t believe the disrespect the g70 gets. I’m not saying the m340 isn’t at the top but the initial cost plus running costs bring it down a notch and that’s were the genesis comes in-also the genesis turns heads way more than the bmw
@avis1978Ай бұрын
You are so right they love to forget that Genesis are there. I'm driving for the last 4 years a 2020 stinger gt limited 3.3T in canada that cost $30k less then the m340 and it's just as fun\powerful for daily use, and actually more practical then the bmw because of the liftback. I see more S5 and stingers than m340i on our roads. They are just too expensive.

Same here. I have a 2023 G70 AWD Sport Prestige. Got it for $55k. I put on Eibach Pro springs and sway bars, AFE cold air intake, and PS4S tires and it's still $10k cheaper than a loaded 340i. The 340i that has less electronic features and a noted worse sound system. I've taken my car to Tail of the Dragon and it's crazy how good the G70 is. People just love to shit on Hyundai products outside of the elentra N. That's the only car people don't throw shade at, even though hyuandai across the board has been pushing the limits for the past few years. The past year or so savagegeese has been a little better with Genesis, but even 2+ years ago they would crap on Genesis products every time. They even claimed the G70 was the same price as a 340i in their review which was the biggest load of horseshit, and that it's only for people who want power to pass someone on the highway. They should really redo their G70 review and be more realistic about it.

I appreciate how your perspective have shifted positively for these cars compared to a few years ago. I didn't and still don't feel that the g30 540ix review was fair, considering that it punches above its weight and while the driving engagement, steering feel specifically is typical modern luxury bmw, it's a way better drivers car than the equivalent Mercedes and Audi products.

You know, when I was considering my last car the M340 was on the list. They have THE BEST drivetrain in the segment, hands down. But I found many other things a letdown. Suspension too stiff/crashy. Seats way too hard. And the lack of buttons/obnoxious UX was the final nail. Bought a lightly used G70 3.3T instead. 90% of the performance, much nicer looking interior w/ REAL BUTTONS, comfier seats and IMHO, better looking as well. It didn't hurt that it was considerably cheaper to buy and maintain. But damn if that B58 isn't tempting.
