When I was in Savannakhet in 1969 nothing like this exist. There was one wealthy as I remember that had two French style homes, one was used by the unnamed organization I was a part of. Recent visits gave me a great surprise in that wealth still exists or more accurately has redeveloped. I love the Laos people and enjoy visiting with those of the much lower economic class.

For a house like this in Laos speaks volumes, most of us are use to materialistic items in a big modern house but we have to keep in mind Laos is a third world country. So to have this type of house their speak volumes. Very nice property.

A lot of it is all for status. The gap between the rich and the poor is a lot worse. They might call themselves a Republic but you are not free to say whatever you want about their government without having their police knocking on your door. I have family there and those who are willing to play ball can achieve that lifestyle. The country is poor and the Chinese are fully aware of that and they are ceasing every opportunity to take advantage of it. Sad. Was born there but have no desire to go back home.
