My Lowe’s, Home Depot, AND Walmart have 2lb-10lb + bags of brand name granular AND liquid fertilizer for as low as $1+ for a $15 bag. Even blood and bone meal. No kidding! I wish I could share a pic of everything I got! I spent about $40 stocking up. Ha ha and I’ve given some to friends because I have so much. When you find a good deal, stock up and share!! Great video, as usual Gary!!

This is brilliant Gary! I have watched you for almost a year now, and I've gotta say, I love your carefully prepped vids esp on fertilizers as it's one of the most overwhelming parts of gardening, (at least for me personally.) The note cards you meticulously write out, are worth the effort. Makes the information easy to digest. If I'm ever lucky enough to score bags of fertilizer for that kind of deal, i'm definitely going to do this. :)

That was very helpful. I buy whatever is on sale. Even high nitrogen lawn fertilizer can be used in the garden, if mixed with other P and K ingredients, and often lawn fertilizer has some iron in it which is helpful in the garden.

It's been months since we were able to buy 16lb Jobe's Organics bags on the cheap at Lowes. Our local lowe's has had barely any soil amendments in stock ever since. We just missed the recent Home Depot deals so I was frustrated, but we made out like bandits at Walmart. Most of their fertilizer bags were $1 each, even the 16lb Jobe's and 18lb Espoma. We didn't get there in time for that awesome score, but we did get more than a few 8lb bags of Tomato Tone for $1, along with multiple bags of the Walmart brand fertilizers. If I can ever find deals on bone meal and blood meal, I might have to revisit this video, thanks for sharing!

Oh, Gary I tried the long day Spanish onions this year and they turned out fine they did take about 3 extra weeks till they were ready to pull and cure and they only get between 3 to 4 inches. Next year I'll try those expression onions I mentioned this early summer. I ordered a pack of seed those are the ones that the young man at the Annapolis farmers market said were more consistent than candy but I noticed his were about 4 inches, and more than half of my candy were 5 to 6 inches. So I'll be leaning on the candy for our main crop this coming year. My wife likes the little flat chipollene and her father is fond of the torpedo. Needles to say I'll be reading your new book this winter once the summer crops are pulled and the new shed is built.And Audrey is putting together her puzzles. I have set up for testing some new root stock seed we grew this year for grafting our heirloom tomatoes and I'll know how they work out buy August I have High hopes for an Effialto cross that had a 2 1/2 inch root base last year and seems to be stable enough to try next year on the Giant Belgium. I've always had more trouble with grafting them and they are my favorite tomato of all time. I may try moving a pepper plant indoors this winter just because I watched you do it last year and didn't get around to it till it was to late. The butterflies are almost all flown to Mexico so I'll have some of the Tithonia pots to use for a big pepper plant or two . Hope all is well : Mike from Bowie

No deals in my area at all, but going every week to HD!! (I’m in zone 9 )In the meantime I’ve been making my own bone meal, powdered banana peels, and have alfalfa pellets. Have plenty of egg shells and chicken manure and worm poo/compost. I do prefer a commercial fertilizer but really trying to keep costs down and use what I already have. I had awesome peppers this year! I think it was you, Gary, who suggested putting bone meal in the planting holes of peppers. Thank you!!

Gary, can you please recommend a video or film a video explaining fertilizing timetables, how often to use fish emulsion versus bloodmeal and bonemeal or other granule fertilizers?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
There isn't one. There are so many ways to do it. We kind of have to make are own time table. Nowadays I amend beds falls and spring and top dress 1 or 2 times during the season. Water soluble every 2-4 weeks based on plants and how they look. Bone and blood meal, I would add in the spring where I have plants that would enjoy it. Learned one time. Gary, can I use these products on my yard too? I have about 400 sq ft of just dirt - the grass is all gone. Not sure if it was disease, lack of sun (pecan trees too much shade or draining nutrients) or ? I’m going to try and re-sod after my soil sample test comes back, but was wondering if these would be okay to add to my ground.

Thank you very much for sharing! My question is...why did the call it "organic" if there are N-P-K chemicals in it? I am looking for true "organic" fertilizer so my tortoise can munch on the plants and flowers that I grow in my backyard.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN7 ай бұрын
Well short version is all things are chemicals. Made up of elements. Organic has become a way to say 'safer' really. It is over used and really a commercial prop to get us to spend more and buy more. True organic is good old homemade compost. The 'Organic' fertilizers are chicken manure for industrial animal farms. Blood meal is freeze dried bovine/pig blood. Bone meal is steam caused cattle bones. Typically these are the main ingredients. True organic is earth, water, and compost. Good luck. Thanks! Over 1500 gardening videos on my YT channel. Hmm I always thought you can't really mix those because for example with the 3-4-4, N is 3 parts of 11 and on the other bag it's 3-5-6 so N is 3 parts of 14? So there are two different ratios
@THERUSTEDGARDEN5 ай бұрын
You can mix them. It's not a perfect blend but based on volume similarity It is based the N P K 3 4 4 is based on the enter volume. I have a question about nutrients. If I have 10-10-10 and let's say a 12-18-25, and do an EC test with the result being at 1.2. Are the results the same, or is one stronger in reality? I am getting lost in the trees with all this stuff as I try to figure out what is destroying my plants after the cotyledon leaves drop.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
The numbers are the concentration in the bag. In theory each bag varies in amounts. Based on how you spread it out, varies the concentration on the soil. My advice and I follow it... is buy whats on sale. pH varies greatly too based on depth. I use fertilizers below a 5-5-5 and just scatter a handful around. All that being said. Plants dying off early arent usually fertilizing issues or pH. Unless you really effected them in some way early on. Questions why you mixed different types of fertilizer Instead of using a single one?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN3 жыл бұрын
You can just go with what's in the bag and move bag to bag. I like to mix them in a big container as it is easy to store and transport. When I add it things, then I don't have to go to 3 bags and bring them to the garden. Like lime, castings, wood ash. But I mix these to that base and in the next videos I specialize them for bulbs or greens. Check out my new gardening PODCAST Gardening Coast2Coast at gardeningcoast2coast.net with CaliKim. I recommend buying 50 pound bags of non mixed fertilizer for the cheapest way. I buy 50 pound bags of amendments and its very cheap. I buy 50 pounds of alfalfa feed for 15 bucks at tractor supply. Its alot more work buying bags of gypsum, dolomite lime, crab meal, poultry manure, etc... You get lots of control this way if you obsessive about growing nutrient dense food. Here is my full soil recipe for anyone who wants it. Here is what I use for amendments mixed into my peat, pearlite , compost blend. 1 part of each All amendments listed are per 1 cubic foot of soil or about 7.5 gallons. 1 cup kelp meal 1 cup alfalfa meal 1/2 cup Neem meal 1/2 cup Crab or Crustacean Meal 1 + 1/2 cups Glacial Rock Dust 1 cup of Gypsum 1 cup Oyster Shell flour 1/2 cup Azomite 1/4 cup rock phosphate 1 cup dolomite lime ↓(optional)↓ 2- 4 handfuls of worm castings 2-4 cups bio char 1 cup green sand 1 cup prilled/ pelletized rock phosphate** ( hard to find) add 5-10% water let sit for 2 weeks or more to cook
