Replaced a rusted carb on a hand-me-down Harbor Freight wood chipper from my inlaws. $16 aftermarket carb from amazon did the trick! I cleaned the carb on my snow blower last year for the second time in 2 years. Don's comment about sometimes you just gotta replace it might be sound advice. I might order one just to keep on hand so I don't have to wait on shipping to replace it when I need it.

I bought that exact non adjustable carb on Amazon. I can't agree more. For $15 I got an entirely new carb. I was going to spend $14 for an OEM bowl gasket and new drain button/valve (wouldn't seal anymore). Good deal, and so much less hassle.

Ive just replaced the carb on my fairly new garden tractor with Kawasaki v twin engine. I had heard horror stories about replacement chinese carbs but took the plunge. I compared as many internal parts as possible with the genuine Walbro unit and could see no issues. In short the machine started instantly, needed minimal idle speed idle air adjustment and has never run so well - full throttle - no issue -- very pleased..

I just finished up with a 1994 Noma Snowblower with a 5hp Tecumseh. It had an Oregon Carb. The Oregon carb is actually better than the OEM Tecumseh version. The main jet going up thru the center and into the throttle body was brass on the oregon. Its plastic on the Tecumseh version. The engine runs great. Its an older one so it may have been made in the USA at the time vs the new Oregon carbs, which are made in China, not sure. I purchased a no name Chinese one last year for just over $10 on ebay for another 5hp Tecumseh and it would not run right at full throttle, it surged bad. It probably could have been rectified by enlarging the main jet with a micro drill bit, but the Oregon carb worked exactly how it should and looked nearly identical to a Tecumseh carb, except it was better, Brass components vs. plastic on the Tecumseh. The Oregon carbs are good.

Here's my experience with aftermarket parts and equipment: I have had good luck with the Chinese carbs all over ebay for briggs quantum engines. They are of lesser quality, but for $20 or less sometimes, they will last as long as an OEM around here where nobody respects ethanol fuel, and gums up their carbs. I have also had good luck with aftermarket Chinese 2 cycle carbs that fit "Big Box" store brand trimmers, edgers, hedge trimmers, etc, both Zama and Walbro. often times the Chinese carbs will have slotted high and low needles without the need for the special adjustment tool(s). I have had terrible success buying aftermarket (Chinese) in-line fuel filters, specifically the red Briggs & Stratton filters. I bought a pack of ten, and every single one leaked fuel. My friend who owns a Stihl dealership told me ten years or so ago that she only uses OEM Tecumseh rebuild kits. She tried aftermarket kits, and had about three dozen customers return their equipment due to leaky needle/seats. The Chinese knockoff Walbro carbs that replace WYL and WYJ carbs are pretty good too. Sometimes, depending on the make/model, an OEM replacement is around $80-$100, whereas a Chinese one is say $12 free shipping. I have not tried ANY aftermarket rebuild kits for carbs after hearing what my friend told me ten years ago. I'd rather shell out an extra $2 and get an OEM kit. The absolute best aftermarket carbs I have found are the Chinese ebay ones for newer Poulan chainsaws. They go for around $8-$9, and they come with fuel line and a snap-in primer bulb. I have bought dozens and NEVER had a problem with them. That being said, I have had great luck with Chinese primer bulbs; the snap-in type, the screw-on type for those Poulan chainsaws, and the common sized Walbro and Zama bulbs that go on the carb itself. You can buy a lot of fifty of each for a few bucks. I have heard bad things about Chinese knock-off fake "Tygon" fuel line. I have been told they color it yellow to look like real deal DuPont Tygon, when really it is just regular plastic. I buy aftermarket air filters for Briggs as well, both the common foam type for Sprint and Quattro type engines, and the paper ones for Quantum style engines, both with great success. Aftermarket Tecumseh air filters are good, too. Aftermarket Chinese Honda replacement carbs are a safe bet too, when the OEM is really expensive. When I can get an aftermarket carb for so cheap, I don't even bother rolling the dice on rebuilding a carburetor. Hope this helps anyone else who fixes equipment.

+pbrstreetgng79 This is great to hear. I have a 39 year old Toro Tecumseh 7hp that I rebuilt 6 years ago and wow did that fix it...gummed up. Now I put stabil and sea foam in the gas...and drain it in April. Running the gas out most times when shutting down make start up easy. I did replace the starter three years ago and the bracket welds just broke off this year. I have yet to replace it, but the engine starts on second pull! I just added the rubber flapper impeller mods that many people have shown and then had to readjust last year's belt tension...also I use vegetable spray on the chute area before I use the blower to lube metal so snow doesn't stick to the cold metal parts. Now I am working on my non-adjustable Simplicity (1999 Regent 14 HP Kohler tractor) I think that is when they made them cheaper. Pulleys/belts everything went bad year 6 and I am barely cutting 1/2 acre. I would like to buy a Scag with 29 hp DFI Kawasaki if anyone has experience with them...I have been reading up on them on scag blog. Thanks for the resource of parts and repairs!

I was so disappointed when Tecumseh stopped engine production. So many people bad-mouth Tecumseh engines. I would not buy a power product unless it HAD a Tecumseh engine on it. My 32 old John Deere 826 never misses a beat and pumps snow all day long; literally, THE SNOW KING! My lawn mowers perform as well. I've never had a bad one. Yup, their carbs can be touchy and don't like dirt [like all carbs] but they perform. At one time, 99 percent of all snowblowers had Tecumseh engines because they perform. Check/change the oil, warm them up, run them hard [they love it and never give up] and let them cool down. Now that they don't make them anymore, I have to make sure mine stay running as long as I can. Your great website and knowledge will insure that that happens. Finally, instead of trashing Tecumseh, I finally found someone who understands/appreciates a Tecumseh. THANKS !

Be careful with after market carbs. I had one on a riding mower Kohler motor and the main jet was the wrong size. Most of these are cheap and remember you get what you paid for. That being said,we do what we need as to get these things running. I ran into a surging issue on a Poulan snow blower and it turned out to be the red plastic jet that just pushes in to the top of the carb needed to have the jet enlarged to fix the surging issue. I learned it from another guy on a You-Tube channel. He said it was a design flaw and I have to agree. The carb isnt anything I am familure with which leads me to believe Poulan is throwing cheap motors on their stuff. I also had to drill out the main jet. The customer said this blower ran like that from the start( surging). He never took it back under warrenty ( I would have). Another place quoted him $400 to fix it. That being BS and the shop simply didnt want to fix it. Its called putting such a high price on it you know the customer will say no. It does happen, even auto mechanics have been known to do this. Now days, people can be lazy and cherry pick a job I guess. I fixed that blower and am proud of myself that I was able yo save someone a lot of money and not charge some stupid price like that. Because of a poorly designed cheapo carb.

I have used aftermarket carburetors on Tecumseh powered Craftsman blowers, namely to replace Tecumseh 632107A (which is Oregon 50-640, not either of these two part numbers) which is a popular one for the 5 hp Tecumseh Snow King as used on a Murray made Craftsman blower. I bought one for about $9 off Ebay and bolted it on a machine and it started right up and ran great out of the box. As you said, the Tecumseh original was rebuilt a few times, but because it sat, and no matter how much it was cleaned it was still a problem. There are multiple versions of this, so I suggest to look up your original part # from the parts list and then interchange it on the Stens, Oregon or Rotary website to determine which one you need.

My question is since its an aftermarket carb can you buy a replacement needle and seat ? cause I noticed it uses a brass seat and viton needle and OEM Tecumseh uses a rubber seat and metal needle, so a Tecumseh rebuild kit wont work other than the bowl and bowl nut gasket. That is why I don't use or recommend aftermarket carbs anymore, ive tried cheapo's from ebay and more expensive aftemarket ones like the Oregon and have never had good luck with none of them at least 10 different ones so now in my eyes its OEM or nothing if it cant be rebuilt.

I've bought both versions from China for an 8.5hp Tecumseh blower but eventually ended up just rebuilding the OEM Tecumseh. The aftermarkets I purchased (not from Oregon) look identical to yours except that they both had a plated steel fuel bowl. They also leaked exactly as you described. I finally put the rebuilt OEM back on because they never ran quite as good. Can the fixed and adjustable hi-lo jet parts be used inter-changeably on the OEM Tecumseh carb? i doubt I will ever use the aftermarkets but wondered about using some of the parts.

Hi. Thanks again for great tips. I am always concerned about non OEM carbs but the savings can be considerable. I,ve worked on a couple very new TroyBilt Storm 2410 blowers with the Powermore Chinese engines. Both of them had less than 10 hours on them and surged like mad. Like you I cleaned and rebuilt the first one to no avail Then replaced the carb. The one I am working on now was run for just about 2 hrs. last winter and I don't want to waste time rebuilding. Went to Amazon for new carb and they list almost a dozen aftermarket replacements cheap. Besides Oregon are there other good suppliers of aftermarket carbs? I did try to clean out the existing carb by removing bowl and needle valve and using carb spray. Now the thing leaks when priming each Push (even the first) and if you tip the machine downward. I double checked and all connections are as tight as I dare. Any ideas?

How interchangeable are carbs from different small engines? I just received a 30 year old Yamaha YS828 snowblower. Most things on it look like clones of the Honda 828 and 928's I've used, but it does almost as well as the Honda's, so I'm thinking of putting it at our rental in addition to the MTD snowblower it has (the 10HP MTD does pretty well (just removed 32" of wet, partially compacted snow with it), but it would help to shoot the snow further like the Hondas or this Yamaha does). I've fixed several things on it, but the carb leaks just a little out the drain plug and holding plug on the bowl. The external fuel pump, which I haven't seen on another small engine I've played with, might leak too. Could I replace the carb and fuel pump with a carb clone for a honda of similar HP? The OEM carb 7KF-14501-01-00 is available online for around $120, but I'd rather simplify to something I'm more familiar with, getting rid of the fuel pump (which I think most bowl carbs do away with, or internalize like a Zama or Walbro non-bowl carb on a chainsaw or the like). Thanks for the great videos and info!

BTW, the main reason I'm looking to replace this carb is that when cleaning the carb in trying to get the engine running, the screwdriver notching on the main jet striped, and so I was unable to get the main nozzle out to clean it's small orifices. It's working for now, and I can likely fix any fuel leaks with similar seals or fix-a-seal, but it would be great to know if I could put a different carb on it if it or the pump fails.

Don, nice video! Just wanted to tell you that I bought a nonadjustable carb from the Tecumseh dealer for $60. tax in...... yes he gave me a good deal. Then I ordered a nonadjustable one from China for $21, Ebay. delivered. Neither had the mounting hardware for the choke lever. I didn't change the gasket on the Chinese one, but had no leaks. I did have to exchange the Tecumseh one because it didn't work right, 2nd one was OK. I took the bowels off and compared the insides. The only difference I saw is where the primer tube comes out into the bowel..... on the Tecumseh one there is a plug with a tiny opening on the side. With the Chinese one there was no plug and you could see the end of the fitting that goes out through (better for cleaning). Only thing was I had to wait a month for the Chinese one to come. Keep the video's coming, remember the world is watchingByron

Can an adjustable carb be swapped out with a non-adjustable carb? A friends snowblower sat for 3 or more years, I cleaned it up, but it still surges and backfires.

Can you replace a non adjustable Tecumseh carburetor with the older adjustable carb

OK! Forget the comment i left in your last video, BUT does it say on the Oregon box that it is imported from China. Oh, yel, i didn't replace the gaskets and didn't have any leaks. It was no trouble to see the difference in the thickness of the 2gaskets that went under the nut though.

yes they are from china

Hey, I've been soaking my lawnmower carbs in gum out and replacing the gaskets when necessary, I found gum out in the 60s when I was a kid mowing lawns . I haven't heard you say you use gum out, do you not like it or is there some reason that maybe I shouldn't be using it that I don't know about? Thanks Ed
