Good on you guys for attempting to try to fix it and get it running and trying at all. A lot of people wouldn't be able to even start or know what to do, still a shame that it will eventually get cut up considering guys that have them never can get parts easily.

The block can be drained down and welded if you cared to take it that far. Was still good to see the old IHC fire up and run though.

If you decide to scrap it, you should keep the builders plate as a souvenir. Hang it on your wall as a reminder of the challenge you all overcame to get it going.

From my bit of experience with these old things they drink a ton of fuel trying to start on ether when they’re cold. They also just kinda chug through a fuel tank like nothing, hate to say it but that’s why a lot of the older machines get sold

Is that an inspection port where the coolant is leaking out of the block, or tidy looking patch behind the injection pump (accessing what)? Did International boost the rigidity of the block by adding some extra corners into the casting? Working apart from some fundamental flaws means there's likely some parts that could be useful and some fun learning/interaction.

The block crack and oiler cooler are victims of a previous owners lack of care.The cooler probably has as separate drain.For it's day it was cutting edge but the start on gas and switch to diesel became obsolete quickly and wasn't too popular due to its complexity. Parts for this crawler are basically non-existent,except at scrap yards. Some parts can be rebuilt of course .It's been run hard and put away wet more than once.Its still going through which is quite a testament. Its biggest problem is it's too big to easily repair for most. Bang for the buck isn't there either.Not enough of it left to use commercially and too big to haul around as a toy. A shame really,this machine and it's brethren built America.But it's in your hands now,use it,maybe a new owner is en route.

Personally I would keep it around to sell for parts or as it is. You would make more by selling the parts in it than just scraping it entirely.

I wouldn't cut it up if I was you personally because it's worth probably 5+10 times more then scrap price just as parts alone for someone who uses and operates that old stuff, it's a piece of history for crist sakes, and this is coming from a person who rather operate older equipment than new stuff, it takes a way better operator to run that old stuff smoothly and efficiently, and Im proud of that I own a 1950 AC HD5b That's been streached to fit a 3-71 in it and she's quite the powerhouse, I can out pull most equipment of the same size and I do all my own work on all of my equipment, would be sad to see thst scraped if I had the funds id just pick the ol girl up from you guys if shes just bound for the shredder

@@hardtail-gy8dk then what happens when things get hot??? They expand, so there for the crack will get bigger and the coolant will leak so if the radiator cap is cracked one turn it can’t build up pressure

These era crawlers off all sizes were susceptible to cylinder head cracking, there were many changes to coolant circulation during production, the last changes were jetheads and coolant reservoirs like this one has on the hood at the dash, most of cracking was reduced by special operator habits especially cooling down before shutoff, given the location of this crack I would lean towards water freezing due to low or no antifreeze, I've seen cracks in this location successfully repaired before both brazed and using lock n stitch method but I'm not sure they are motivated to save it, it would be nice to see it saved but if scrapped there are lots of valuable obsolete parts, the undercarriage is one and the winch is harder to find
