My mom (at 82, a master of the art of furniture/wood restoration) would say to slather the stripper on and let it work. I tend to spread it too thinly so when we are fortunate enough to work on a project together (we live on opposite sides of the country) I follow her lead. At 62, I am so glad that I still have her as my expert :) Oh, and she would tell me to put something down on the porch to protect it. We work on the porch too. okay, still watching! A sacrificial toothbrush is good for the crevices, and a green scrubby during the last stripper layer might be helpful.

@mygreatchallenge4 жыл бұрын
Ours still works too but we only have one key and they can't reproduce it or so we are told. But i am glad you gave me an age on it. I suspected the hardware was from the 50s. I am wondering if the door is from 1929 when they built the house or a replacement from the 50s. It s solid oak.
@chrisscinta19734 жыл бұрын
My Great Challenge We can still get those keys in Western New York. But probably newer locks are more secure. I have a 1956 ranch and try to keep everything original that I can. Including the doors and all the hardware

Quite a few years ago I stripped to bare wood & sanded to perfection an antique door with the oval glass my husband had purchased from someone he worked with, I was planning on staining oak. It was to replace the not so impressive front door on my house. To this day it has been stored in an unfinished area upstairs in my house to keep it nice waiting for the day to be stained & installed! You are inspiring me so THANKS...I really need the inspiration, (well, & so does my husband, because I can't do the installing part!). Super days work...have a good swim!

Love this video. The scroll backplate and the other hardware are gorgeous. Glad you are going with the red wine door color. Brown siding with a red wine door and all the white trim on your house are beautiful colors. I have an idea of something to keep out the draft from your letter box slot that will look prettier than duct tape for the inside of your door. Why don’t you make a quilted piece to attach to the inside of the letter box opening and maybe a stuffed cylinder to stuff in the actual opening. They will keep out the draft and look pretty. Looking forward to seeing the door finished and your other projects.

I started to strip our front door 5 years ago...took off most of the paint thought it looked shabby chic and left it that way. It's a project that now needs to be finished by someone who knows how to finish the job.
@eb98442 жыл бұрын
I started stripping the paint from my side door months ago. It was chipping off in chunks on its own so I took a scrapper to it but just like your door, it had multiple layers of paint, including the pistachio colour!! That colour must have been popular at some point in time along with different shades of beiges and yellows. The door seems to be original to the home which was built in the early 60’s. I stopped doing anything else to it as I didn’t know how to use a paint stripper and didn’t own a power sander. However, after removing some layers of paint, there seems to be water damage or water rot on the bottom panel of the door. Now that I have a paint stripper and a sander, I’m not sure whether I should continue with my project. Any suggestions? A brand new modern door with a new transom above it will be setting me back close to $2k.

@@mygreatchallenge Nicole on Rehab Addict puts hardware in an old crockpot (with just water, absolutely no chemicals) to soak the paint off. You let it "cook" all night on low & the paint falls off. Your door hardware isn't painted, so you wouldn't need to do that, but it does work like a charm if you ever have painted hardware.
