I bought a new FL1 Kalahari in 2005. The only thing that failed was the fuel pump at 12k miles. 43k in two years, then sold on. We now have three FL2's, The latest is a 2013 SD4 XS, 195k miles and still drives well, with a recent power transfer box for two hundred pounds. So, good and bad in any manufacturers ranges over time. We need people like Chris and Vera to keep the information up to date to keep aging vehicles mobile.

Totally agree the td4 Freelander is the best and most reliable car LR ever made. I have a 2010 FL 2 with 180000 miles, have owned it for 6 years and am now about to spend the first serious money on it with a new PTO, about £800. Wort every penny. My son has a RR sport and put them side by side there is not much size difference, to me the FL is just a slightly smaller range rover. Loved this video and would like to see more on the Freelander. You are both fantastic entertainment and by far my favourite KZbin channel. Love from Birmingham

Freelander 2/Evoque with the 2.2 diesel is a good runner up for most reliable engine. Do not really see any issues with those unless they have had neglected maintenance.
@AlexStrugariu11 сағат бұрын
Just started watching the video. My old Freelander is with my dad for some years. Bought it in 2009 with ca. 160k km, and now it's on 400k km. No engine issues except for 3 injectors, original turbo, 3 IRDs (including rebuild), 3 clutches, but original VCU and rear diff. Of course, all electric windows failed (the one which lasted the longest was the tailgate one), and many other niggles.

That's a lot of work for a clutch repair. Have the auto manufacturers got it all wrong. They have forgot the prime function, that is produce vehicles that simple functional and easy to maintain with reliabilit. The first manufacturer that bucks the trend and makes simple vehicles without all the bells ad whistles I believe will do well.. Great show guys.

Officially according to the independent Landrover garages near me the Freelander 2 is the most reliable Landrover ever built I own a 2014 SD4 190bhp apart from regular maintenance and proper servicing replacement components it’s not cost me any more than anything else iv owned ,and it’s a car I intend to keep forever They down side it is not ULEZ compliant, so bizarrely I can use my 4.2ltr V8 XK8 instead when I need to go into a City that has ULEZ zones 🤔🤔🤔🤔

I had a TD4 auto for 11 years before my D3. Mine was an auto and it was so reliable, the only roadside fault was a turbo hose which I fixed with some tape to limp it home. It did have the VCU replaced at 70,000 and then a few other bits and bobs, but really it was costing £300-400 a year to run and I’d paid it off years before. The interior was immaculate as well despite it being used as the family car, towing my Lotus to tracks and stuff around our land. I also wish I’d kept it, but my Disco3 is a worthy replacement.

Thanks guys for another great video 👍. Just a obvesrvation...there is an extreme high pitched whine on the video mostly at the start...I thought my new laptop had gone wrong but noticed it appear every time the block heater light came on! It's most obvious that is what's causing it when at 2:13 it starts and then when you zoom into the block heater the volume of it rises and then disappears when the light on the heater goes out at 2:22! Weird! If you are older and have lost some high end hearing you may not hear it. Possible a whine from coil/inductor on the circuit board. It may only be RFI reacting with the camera and not be heard in real life, only on the video.
@BikeLugger11 сағат бұрын
I spotted the same thing with the high frequency noise. Wondered what it was until I paused the video! It's possible to spot the corolation again with the heater light going off at 02:37

My friend had a Freelander, a specially modified from LR version of it, in fact. We went off roading to a slot of different places. I am quite sure I spent at least half the time pulling him over obstacles with my Jeep. But.. Amazingly, that Freeland never once broke down. Sure, it had the ground clearance of an F1 car, but at least it was pretty reliable.

This is why I drive autos ... my TD4 Auto Freelander Mk1 was excellent but I did have to replace a front driveshaft in the snow on my drive at ground level. 😁... only major things that went wrong (as usual) were the centre prop supports and the VCU. A few niggles but was cheap & easy to fix. An underrated car if well maintained

Nice work as usual. Battery Uga Duga. I have owned the Metabo SSW 18 LTX 400 BL for a couple of years, the only bolts it didn't take off are the ones it broke. Pilot error. It has a torque setting which means you can turn the power down and just let it Uga Duga for a bit which puts in vibration without snapping the bolt. I know you are already on the CAS battery platform so I thought I would let you know. The 400 in it's codes refers to it's max tightening but I have heard it's torque undoing is higher. They sell bigger ones but the 400 is a good power to weight tool. Always good to take care of farmers, they play with big machines that are very useful.

Great job you two! That was a great deal of work for you both. I didn't realise it took so long to do the videos, 15-20 hours is a long time every week. So thanks for all the videos you've produced over the years Christian and Vera. My best friend nearly thirty years ago was one of Metaflux's UK sales guys, when Metaflux was totally unknown in the UK back then. I got from him some of that grey paste and I had it for years in a small tin. It didn't come with a brush then. Also I got some silicone sealant that would actually cure off underwater. Now that stuff was really impressive 30 years ago. You farmer friend is a lucky guy to get his Freelander fixed for nothing, I hope he paid for the parts! And Vera, the " Transfer" case is called the "intermediate reduction drive" for a reason. It's not a straight splitting the drive to the rear axle, it actually changes the ratio of the drive ever so slightly to something like 0.97 :1. This makes the rear wheels drive at a slightly different speed from the front. And if you had that car for ten years and didn't have to replace it, you are very lucky. In fact you could have had to do that two or even three times in that ten years they were so unreliable and broke often. When they brought out the Freelander2 they got rid of that entirely!

Freelander 1 with BMW engine one of the best cars Land Rover ever made. If you're looking for a battery impact wrench check out DeWalt dcf899 or 900 I've had Ingersoll rand and Milwaukee both good but both didn't last as long as the cheaper DeWalt only problem with the DeWalt was the anvil broke but Chinese replacement was only £14.50 original lasted 6 years Chinese lasted a year priced genuine over £50 so just bought 2 Chinese as machine is now 8 years old and might die soon Ingersoll Rand only lasted 5 years and motor and switch went. Love your videos,

In the next episode: Christian and Vera buy back ancient Freelander from bemused farmer for €4,000 and perform full restoration In all seriousness, with modern cars becoming increasingly unreliable and disposable, I can see that there will be increased demand for older, more basic vehicles. Maybe a Freelander isn't the best candidate. But, fixing one up good now probably results in a vehicle that'll do another 300,000km more or less trouble free. I'm wondering what to do with an old BMW 2.0L N47 diesel. It's 300,000km, nothing is broken, it's even quite nice cosmetically. Even the timing chain is fine. I've looked after it. Am seriously considering putting work into it to extend the life properly (like, a new timing chain just in case, walnut blast, etc).
