In this episode, we dive into the unexpected chaos that comes with DIY repairs. After our major engine rebuild last year, we discovered multiple oil and water leaks on our beloved 2006 Land Rover Discovery 3 with the TDV6 2.7L engine and 290,000 km. Oops!
Join us as we walk you through the entire repair process, sharing tips, tricks, and a few laughs along the way. We fixed the camshaft oil seals, replaced a leaky water pump, and found a sneaky leak in the vacuum pump. We even performed an oil change and inspected the filter for any chips! We also install a new timing belt and show the correct setup in detail.

The upper coolant hose was weeping at the thermostat housing connection on my SDV8 L494. I was happy as it was the cheaper of the two hoses…until I was informed LR changed the diameter of the hoses, so also the connections on the thermostat housing. Basically a £50 part replacement was turning into a £550 part replacement. Luckily someone pointed me towards a thread on FFRR forum. Found a link for some o rings. Replaced them yesterday and pressure tested the coolant system and it’s all good again!

So many people judge the quality of water pumps on the basis of how the impeller etc looks, when the part you can’t see is the important bit: the bearing!

Hi Christian and Vera, I really got to get this of my chest. I owned 4 land rovers including a disco III, and the fact that i kept coming back to them is the fact that they are the most inovated beautiful cars designwise. But owning them is a much different “debacle”. First you buy a fully equiped garage preferably with a black smith in the other garage, than you buy yourself your Landy, than you mary an automotive engineer (but you christian aren’t my type) and Vera is not entirely there yet, to keep the car maintained, because nearly every week it has an issue, and you guys ( LR-Time) are the proof of that and that’s what keeps your channel alive. Looking at for instance “the Car care nut-channel” is more than boring, but than again i understand that people who want to enjoy DRIVING the car switch to the more reliable brands ( no names here). I still stay your biggest fan though because i’m in awe of your craftsmanship and i keep laughing my a…s off with the 2(3 with Robin) of you. Keep making these great videos, can’t wait for next week. Warmest regards Theo

Chris , Vera I honestly think the quality of parts are the problem with a lot of these issues. You really don't know where those seals came from or anything else, made in China and boxed as OEM or name brand . I was a Ford mechanic back in the 70's to 90's and you didn't have to worry about part quality at all back then. Good luck and good morning !

Regarding the water pump you fitted: if you ever have unexplained random overheating events then that bronze impeller could be slipping on the shaft if it's purely an interference drive. (due to expansion) Had it once with a similar pump on an entirely different engine and it took a heck of a lot of tracking down.

With so many reoccurring oil leaks, it might be worth checking the PCV system, if theres excessive crank case pressure there will be oil leaks Also check your oil choice, a Ester (Group V) and PAO (Polyalphaolefin Goup IV) keeps the seals soft/swollen.

On the last maintenance job at the Citroen dealer, last year, I had to explicitly ask for 5W40 for my 2.7 in my C5. They mentioned that there was a directive from Citroen that the C5 2.7 would now receive 5W30 by default...

No we don't do that. To us, metal content and oildilution is of interest. Neither will be shown in an analysis. We do not need to know how much sud is in the oil, it's a diesel, there is sud in the oil. Invest the money in more frequent oil changes. We get send a lot of oil analysis from our Patreons. And guess what they ged recommended. No more than 4000 km inbetween oilchanges. 👌🙋‍♀️

@ hmm, at 50euro a test I think it is well worth it- spotting chips is a bit late for me and changing oil every 4000 km a bit over the top. I did a Millers one before I changed to 5w40 and it shows metal content and fuel dilution which are important to me. Great channel by the way👍

Some water pump manufacturer information sheet says that you should submerge the pump in coolant for certain amount of time before installing. I guess it's for the seal to get lubed up before first start. I've never done it and not one pump has come back because of a leak or other problem. Let's see how good your HEPU does after you turned it with a lathe dry :D I really hope it doesn't leak

Have owned a disco 3 some years ago. Unfortunatly i lack your mechanical skills. It was the most fun car i ever owned both on and off road. However it spent more time at the mechanic than at my place. Vera's lr3 was totally refurbished a short while ago, and still it keeps breaking down. Lets face it, if you dont another vehicle and have good mechinical skills, this is a model to be avoided.
