This almost sounds like we have no choice then. It comes down to whether a person *would* or *wouldn’t* respond to God’s grace, which is a disposition that it sounds like we have no control over.

Invincible ignorance is the key. I was raised to believe that the pope was the antichrist. As I got older, evidence mounted that he was, in fact, not :-) But I was under a lot of pressure from family and friends to not become Catholic. The grace of God gave me the fortitude to be confirmed catholic about seven years ago. But what if I had simply closed my eyes and covered my ears? I shudder to think about it. But God‘s love is greater than our sin.

As I explore the Catholic Church I wonder about the church’s official position of Protestants who sincerely believe in and love Jesus but never become Catholic. I’m not talking about liberals (practical atheists really) who pretend to be Christians, or for whatever reason seem to love having a veneer of religion. Rather, I am talking about the Billy Graham’s of the world (to use him as the archetypal example), who just never become convinced of the Catholic Church. On the one hand I am mostly sold on the Catholic Church, but on the other hand I find it really hard to believe that Billy Graham was lacking anything concerning his spiritual life or salvation (speaking in a human way of course). I could use some more detailed help concerning Protestants please🙏

May God bless you for considering the Catholic Church and all Catholics are praying for you to one day join! The beautiful thing about the Billy Graham question, is it's only for God to judge. If he was given (or would have been given) the complete truth about the CC being the one true Church founded by Christ, and he would have accepted it, he has nothing to worry about. Maybe he has a bit of purgatory time but he is saved. And I believe that probably is the case with Billy Graham.
@Kitiwake
@Kitiwake 2 жыл бұрын
Great observation. Did Billy Graham reject the Catholic faith or consider aspects of it has merit? Or take Abraham Lincoln. A hater of the Catholic faith who, by the end of the war, having seen the depravity of humanity and the fortitude through the practice of the faith of Irish and other Catholic Union troops under the same conditions, very much softened his views of the church. Was he touched by Grace which only comes into this world through the body of Christ, the Catholic church, before his own tragic death? Did he consider some aspects of the one true faith only found in the church and believed that they had merit? It's possible to pray that they both did so that their souls might gain eternal salvation.

You might look at it like this, God started The Catholic Church with His apostles. He renamed His apostle Peter (Rock in Aramaic), told him,”You are Peter, upon this rock I build My Church, forces of hell shall not prevail against her. I give YOU the keys to the kingdom of Heaven. What YOU shall bind on earth shall be bound even in Heaven. What YOU loosen on earth shall be loosened even in Heaven.” Mt 16:18-19 Jesus appointed His apostles first Pope & Priests, gave THEM His authority, instituted Sacraments and commanded them to spread His Church Infallibly to the world. Jn 1:42, Mk 3:14-19, Lk 10-16, 22:32, Eph 2:19-22, Mt 28:18-20, Jn 21:15-17, 1 Pet 2:5-6, 2 Cor 5:18-19, Jn 20:21-23, Mt 18:18, Jn 6:48-59, 1 Cor 11:23-29, Lk 22:19-20, 1 Cor 10:16-17, Mt 3:11, 19:4-6. The Catholic Church is the only place on earth The Transubstantiation occurs. The only one to possess the keys to the kingdom of Heaven-Gods authority and sacraments! Jesus actually said in Jn 6:52-59, unless we eat of His Body and drink His Blood in Holy Communion, we will have no life in us. We will never enter Heaven. I will pray for you. God bless!

Is divine revelation enough to make the "invincibly ignorant" statement inapplicable in most cases? Also, how is this idea that a Hindu can be justified before God not heretical? Is belief in Christ required for salvation or not?
@Kitiwake
@Kitiwake 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that If as a Hindu he never had heard of Christ and lived earnestly by his own beliefs, which places him within invincible ignorance and in a faithful way which accords with the natural law which comes into the world from God through the Church, then yes, it is possible for him to be saved. Being said, the amount of cases that conform to this standard of salvation, in my view, would be very few.

I watched this and am still confused. He says the Orthodox churches have all seven sacraments and that grace is communicated through them, but if you knowingly reject the Catholic church you're doomed. How does the hypothetical Hindu have a better chance at salvation than a believer in Christ who is receiving all the sacraments and following their bishop (who has apostolic succession)?

Same thinking here. When I was much younger and naive- what about an hypothetical non-catholic who lived and died a good and holy person? As I age, the passage in the scripture that states "..no one is good..." slowly began to sink in. I began to realize the mistakes and omissions I made in my life before but failed to acknowledge them. Even my thoughts that were unholy- that makes me unholy too. Everyone sins- that is why Catholics starts the mass praying "Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy"

This is a great explanation. My take is it's possible, but unlikely, to be saved "outside" of the Catholic church, as it's only" by means of" the Catholic church can one be saved. All Grace comes into the world through the Catholic church which of the body of Christ on earth. So a deliberate rejection of the Church which is the body of Christ, said another way, it is Christ in the world today.
@joycegreer9391

That is only man created false doctrine. RCC is deception, a manmade religious system, far removed from the true early first churches. It preaches a different Jesus, a different gospel, a different authority than from the Word of God and the apostles taught. THE Church of Jesus Christ, His Body, His Bride is not any physical earthly church. It is the body of all true believers of all the ages from any church or no church; maybe even some R Cath, IF they can overcome RCC false doctrines and find TRUE belief and faith.

So if I'm hearing what you are saying correctly, damnation comes not from an ignorance/passive lack of faith in God but rather the willful REJECTION of God? If this is true, then would it be feasible to say that those who did not hear of Jesus and have the opportunity to accept Him and God are for lack of a better description put in a holding pattern (not purgatory) until final judgement comes, at which time and after learning of God they must declare their final acceptance or rejection of Him, and their acceptance or rejection is what leads to their ultimate salvation or damnation? Sounds identical to what I have heard about how satan and the demons were damned. They were told of their duties in heaven and instead of accepting them and serving God they rejected God's will for them and were immediately cast out. The actively rejected God's authority and chose to do something else.

There are those who where never exposed to the truth (e.g. an isolated tribe) who are considered "invincibly ignorant." If you read up on that term you can understand what the Church teaches on the subject. As for those who are passive or lukewarm in their faith, see Revelation 3:15-16. "I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot.* I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth."

So it’s been 10 months since my comment and nothing. So I’ve come to this conclusion and someone tell me if I’m incorrect. Okay here I go haha. So if a person is convinced that their religion is the right religion and lives to the dictates of there conscious following the Grace God has granted them, they can be saved. Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, Non Catholic, JW, Mormon, Atheist etc etc. Now the caveat is that although this is possible, the chances of someone living a life of perfect charity, following there good conscious and Graces God has granted them; is improbable. So then here’s my question. Why overemphasize the possibility of salvation without over emphasizing the probability of salvation?
@MillionthUsername
@MillionthUsername Жыл бұрын
Invincible ignorance is very hard to achieve on account of the fact that the person would have to move Heaven and earth to try to find the truth but then fail "through no fault of their own." The very idea is set up to fail, yet logically you do have to allow it at least as a possibility, but as you say this should not be treated as any probability. The other point is that even if a person qualifies as invincibly ignorant of the gospel, Jesus, the Church, etc., this does not get them off the hook for their sins! They would have to ALSO live a moral life as they are desperately yet fruitlessly (seemingly, as this speculation would have it) searching for God and truth. Is this even possible? Christians typically fall into sin after baptism - and thankfully we have the sacrament of Confession to restore us to God's grace - but what does the hypothetical person who has no knowledge of Christianity have? If they are truly seeking God in their own 'ignorant' way, then one would expect that God would lead them out of this situation by sending them a missionary or an angel, etc. If they are not getting this from God, then one might conclude that this absence of help is already a judgment against them. This is the problem with speculation even if there is a logical basis to it, you just can't know what's going on as it is a mystery between that person and God. I don't think it's our job to fret over such things, but to live out and preach the gospel as best we can.

Nothing new is to be allowed for nothing can be added to the old look for the faith of the elders and do not let our faith be disturbed by a mixture of new doctrines. St Vincent of Lerins, 445 A.D., all novelty in Faith is a sure Mark of heresy. Saint Paul Cried Out aloud again and again to all men to all times and to all places that if anyone announces a new doctrine let him be anathematized excommunicated. Ecclesiastics 18:5 - Nothing maybe taken away or added. Pope Pius X, 1903-1914 A.D., Oath against Modernism - And so I retain most firmly the faith of the Fathers and shall retain it until the final Breath of Life !! Regarding the certain Gifts of Truth, which is, was and will, always be, in the succession of the episcopacy, from the Apostles, But not so that what may seem better and more fitting according to each one's period of culture, may be held, but so that the absolute and immutable truth preached by the apostles from the beginning may never be believed otherwise, may never be understood otherwise !!! Galatians 1:8 - but though we are an angel from heaven preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you let him be anathema excommunicated from the church Proverbs 30:6, add nothing to his words lest you be reproved and found a liar. St Thomas Aquinas, Doctor of the church died 1274 A.D - Our faith is identical with that of the ancients. Deny this and you dissolve the unity of the church !! we must hold this for certain that the Faith of the people at the present day is one with the Faith of the people of past centuries !!! were this not true then we would be in a different Church then they and literally the church would not be one !!! Saint Cyril of Alexandria, Doctor of the church died 444, A.D. - for it is not allowable for anyone to change even one word, nor allow one syllable to be passed over mindful of the saying : past not beyond the ancient bounds which thy fathers have set !!! Pope Leo XIII, Satis Cognitum (# 9)June 29,1896: Can it be lawful for anyone to reject any one of those truths without by that very fact falling into heresy ?!! without separating himself from the Catholic Church ? Without repudiating in one sweeping act the whole of Christian teaching ? For such is the nature of Faith that nothing can be more absurd than to accept some things and reject others !!! But he who dessents even in one point from divinely revealed truth absolutely rejects all the faith, since he thereby refuses the honor God as the Supreme truth and the formal motive of Faith. Pope Leo XIII,Satis Cognitum # 9, June 29,1896: the Catholic Church found it on these principles and mindful of her office has done nothing with greater Zeal and Endeavor then she has displayed in guarding the Integrity of the Catholic faith hence she regarded as Rebels and expelled from the ranks of her children all who held beliefs on any point of Doctrine different from her own. Pope Palagius II, 578-590,A.D. consider the fact that whoever has not been in the peace and unity of the traditional catholic church cannot have the Lord although given over to flames and fires they burn or thrown to wild beasts they lay down their lives they will not be for them that crown of faith but the punishment of faithlessness such a one can be slain he cannot be crowned if slaying outside the church he cannot attain the reward of eternal life in Paradise. If there is a change YOU ARE NOT TO SUPPORT IT OR embrace it IN ANY WAY !!! There is no confusion unless you're a heretic and belong to the vatican 2 fake church, there is no confusion for true Catholics.The teachings of the church are simple and clear. Nothing is to be changed !!!!! Nothing !!! If you disagree with this your excommunicated from the church you no longer are Catholic you no longer have a Father in Heaven or a Mother !!!! For Teachings on a Traditional Catholic Church see “the Most Holy Family Monastery” on their website by the diamond Brothers. She also “God's Catholic dogma” on the website. These are the only two places in the entire world you can go to for traditional Catholic teachings. Warning ⚠️ do not ask the opinion of any “Vatican 2 priests” they hate with a passion these two websites, they are sworn enemies. Because the Most Holy Family Monastery and God's Catholic dogma websites expose the Vatican II church for all its evils. Do your own research.

They can’t receive His Sacraments. They don’t receive His Doctrine, Scripture, Gospel or Sacred Traditions; they receive heretical men’s versions of Gods. At best a partial explanation. How can you treat this subject without reference to the natural law, a reflection of the eternal law of God, implanted in every human heart, Catholic or not? Christ’s grace in a non Catholic person who tries his best to follow the natural law in his life will surely save him.

1 Cor 10:16-17 St Paul asks Catholics and protestants: Brothers and sisters: "The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ?" Catholics answer: Amen, it is indeed the blood of Christ Protestants: No it just symbolic. "The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?" Catholics answer: Amen, it is indeed the body of Christ Protestants: No, it just symbolic. Protestants have a good chance of salvation if Jesus was just kidding when he said "..."Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you". Notice the repeated words "amen", "amen" ? He didn't seem to be kidding.

Was Lazarus Catholic? 19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II: “The universality of salvation means that it is granted not only to those who explicitly believe in Christ and have entered the church. Since salvation is offered to all, it must be made concretely available to all. But it is clear that today, as in the past, many people do not have an opportunity to come to know or accept the Gospel revelation or enter the Church. The social and cultural conditions in which they live do not permit this, and frequently they have been brought up in other religious traditions. For such people salvation in Christ is accessible by virtue of a grace, which, while having a mysterious relationship to the Church, does not make them formally part of the Church but enlightens them in a way which is accommodated to their spiritual and material situation. This grace comes from Christ; it is the result of his Sacrifice and is communicated by the Holy Spirit. It enables each person to attain salvation through his or her free cooperation.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 applies. Salvation is by grace not by good works lest any man may boast. Protestant believers are assured salvation by trusting in the word of God, (for God does not lie) by belief and repentance. All fake religions, including Roman Catholics, Mormon, Jehovah's Witnesses, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, etc. are all religions preaching salvation by good works. The problem with this teaching is no one's good deeds will delete their bad deeds. Scripture says no liar shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven (in 1 Corinthians and Revelation) and the fact everybody lies, means we ALL are destined for Hell. This is why St Paul says for all have fallen short of the grace of God. Helping old ladies across the road, does not alter how many lies we have already told. The only way is to be forgiven, so that God wipes the slate clean. You cannot bribe God with good deeds. Sadly if we take lust as adultery in the heart (says Jesus) and hatred as murder (says the New Testament) then I am ashamed to say I have broken all 10 commandments given to Moses. I need God's forgiveness, just like everyone else. I have several issues with the false doctrines of the Roman Catholic church. I think it unwise to worship Mary. Mary is not part of the Trinity. Jesus teaches to pray to our Father in Heaven. St Paul writes the only intercessor is Jesus. To pray to Mary and the saints is a contrary biblical teaching. The Catholics add 7 false books to their bible. You have 73. We have 66. You delete the second commandment given in Exodus 20, not to make a graven image and not to bow to it. The reason being you all worship idols ! I see you bow to the statue of Mary, and kiss her foot. Purgatory is non biblical. Luke 16:19-31 clearly shows there are only two places after death, Heaven or Hell. Protestants only use scripture, not all the rubbish man writes. We teach only God alone can forgive sins, not priests. Indeed, Catholics are so far removed from the teachings of scripture, everyone else a) thinks you are false, b) don't consider you as Christian, and c) ponder whether you are lead by Satan.

You are judgmental and your belief is twisted. True Christians love their fellowmen, Christians and non-Christians alike. So you are not a true Christian. Matthew 7:2 says, "Do not judge or you too will be judged. You will be judged in the same way you judge others. The measure you use for others will be the same measure that will be used for you. You believe in the lies of protestantism. I was a former protestant; been there, done that. I know how it works. I was a lutheran, then a pentecostal before I decided to follow the truth. I did my research for years using both secular and non-secular sources. Now, I can conclude that the Catholic Church is the one true Church and your protestant churches are the fake and man-made ones. No offense intended although you are very offensive but it's the truth. You're like a charcoal or a pot calling the kettle black. Thanks however to my former protestant churches because they were the reason why I contemplated and researched Christianity thoroughly until I found the truth that would set me free. I was restless back then; I felt like there was something missing that I could not decipher what it was. The thousands of protestant churches could not be real as there was only one church that Jesus foounded in Matthew 16:18. But no worries man, all your questions, allegations and misconceptions about the Catholic Church will be answered if you take time to research. Try to watch and listen to "Catholic Answers" program in youtube and radio. Also listen to former protestant pastors and theologians turned Catholic. The likes of Scott Hann, Keith Nester, CS Lewis, and many others. You can search them in youtube or facebook. For sure they know their protestant faith better than you do because they're theologians and pastors. God loves you. And I will pray that he will condone your blasphemous words and that you be enlightened.

@@gerry30 Jesus will return after Jerusalem gets nuked by the abomination which causes desolation mentioned in Matthew 24. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who have part of the first resurrection for the second death has no hold of them. They will reign with Christ for a thousand years. After the 1000 years the rest of the Dead will be brought back to life. Then comes the end. Jesus must reign until he has defeated all of his enemies. All Power, Dominion, and Authority then the last enemy that will be defeated is death itself. Then He will return the kingdom back to God. God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? God said, I will make a mortal more rare than fine gold,A man more than the golden wedge of Ophir.Therefore I will shake the heavens,And the earth will move out of her place. The Earth is Hell in the future (2 Peter 3). It gets hit by an asteroid (Revelation 9) and pushed toward the sun (Isaiah 13-13). In the future after death is defeated, an asteroid will strike the dark side of the Earth penetrating the planet deep and pushing it toward the Sun. The Beautiful and Eternal New Jerusalem will take the best of humanity and the glory of the nations to a new Earth where righteousness dwells. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. The cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? For we know that if our earthly [a]house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as [c]a guarantee. He came up with the "Anonymous Christian" nonsense. Rahner was best described by an old Jesuit as "an undeclared heresiarch." And "useless as a priest." He did a lot of damage to the Church and the faithful and Rahner made some dubious additions to Denzinger's Sources of Catholic Dogma especially about the exclusive salvation dogma of the Catholic Church
