As an air-cooled guy that engine removal was pretty painful to watch. It's soo much easier when it's stuck to just drop the engine and trans axle, pull a side cover off the trans axle and disconnect the input shaft. You'll probably kick yourself when you see how easy it is. Either way it's good to see another oval goin back on the road!

I was born in '49 and the very first time I drove a car on the street was when I was 12, and it was in my father's '52 VW bug !! That had the split rear window, 4 spd. non synchro tranny, and only 25 hp. The headlights were bulbs not sealed beams, and the turn signals were little arms that flipped out of the post between the door and rear side window. It was amber colored with the VW logo and it lit up when it was fully horizontal. Those were more common in Europe. And the taillights were small and only running lights. When you stepped on the brake the number plate light on the engine cover got brighter. Neat old memories !!

There’s always the possibilty that the engine isn’t stuck at all. Hear me out on this: If the clutch is rust-welded together, there’s a good possibility that that’s also the reason the motor won’t come loose from the transaxle. If the brake are also frozen due to rusty crusties, those wheels aren’t going to roll when you’re pulling it either. Now admittedly, it isn’t likely that the engine isn’t stuck, but from personal experience I can tell you that it doesn’t have to be to get the situation you’re finding here, even including no-go with the socket on the crank shaft. We had a 3 inch exhaust pipe lp blowtorch that was about all we could find that would safely heat the engine and tranaxle simultaneously in order to get things to even begin to hudge, If nothing else, this should be a valuable learning experience by the time you set the engine on the floor. Good luck!!

🙏🏻💪🏻Hello, what an interesting car and also the video. I had the same thing with my VW bus. It ran for 40 years and the engine had never been out, it made me feel that. It is the steel studs that are seizing up in the cast aluminum gearbox. No chance. I then removed the engine and gearbox together. When the whole thing was lying on the ground together, I was able to defeat the enemy with a crowbar. Without breaking anything, and bit by bit, the gearbox came away from the engine. I hope I can help you with this. I want the story to continue. Even if you just forgot a screw at the end 😉. No kidding, you can do it. 💪🏻

The best advice I remember from a friend who was a REAL VW guy: "The FIRST thing with an old Bug is to drop the engine/transaxle and rebuild them. Don't waste time messing with them, just go ahead and rebuild them. Then the brakes. The rest of the car is cosmetic." I watched him do a couple of 50's era bugs and he's right. Don't waste time with the small stuff. Oh, and when you're trying to break stuff loose, heat can be your friend. A little judicious torching works wonders.

back in the 1970s In New York City and other large Metropolitain areas Most people put bicycle chain locks thru the front trunk handle and the bumpers to lock their valuables in the Trunk areas ! The Engine Cover on the Oval Window Bugs are slightly different shapes and they had a Unique style Liscense Plate light nick named the Pope Nose styles in the 70s we used to get Grocery Store Buggies and cut the baskets off the frame ,handles ,and wheels to use that as a engine Cart to get the motors in and out of Aircooled VWs it wasn’t perfect but a close enough height to align the motor to the transaxle and with a couple of friends they could lift the vehicle up high enough to roll the motor out and into the engine compartments around the rear Aprons or “Mustache “ Bars as their called on the Buses/Transporters the Buggy frame also allowed you a way to roll the motor around in a garage for storage FYI. If you had a 1 car garage you could build A narrow workbench on both sides of the garage You could store a motor under and still get a VW in the garage those Buggy frame Engine Carts could fit under the Workbench with a spare engine yes you had to do minor Shimming to align the engine to the Transaxle
