I found a 1960's Peugeot PX10 which is the iconic model of this French brand, left for years in a garage, mostly original, which I plan to restore again. It's a beautiful, classic road bike, full of pedigree.

In 1972, my older sister and I joined the newly formed Mississauga cycling club here in southern Ontario Canada. Laura started out with a $69.99 hardware store ten speed, then quickly was given a used Bottecchia, but then came into this white PX10 which she raced her first really serious bunch of races on. I'd be the one privileged to be the mechanic, since she could never get the knack of that, but I'm really familiar with that bike. It was eventually dealt to a friend who may still have it over in France, where it originated. There were black PX10's also but the white one looked so cool. It was available in a nearby bike store new as well. The first tubulars I ever saw on a bike in the store. There've been so many bikes since then but I'll never forget the Peugeot. It was pretty much a perfect racing bike in its time. I ride a Peugeot today in fact. I think it's a '71, that gorgeous resonant orange. It's not a Reynolds frame but it does have a sticker that says "tube special allege Peugeot" and on the seat tube decal it's says "record du monde". I have made it into a one speed, with 42 x 18 gear ratio, as close as I've come to the perfect gear so far, and it has beautiful randonneur shaped handlebars, which I formed by hand myself simply by physically bending the original steel bars. They're way better now that they're upswung and spread wider. But your bike has aluminum bars so I wouldn't advise doing that. But anyway, great video, please post an update of what you do with it. Are you just going to clean and wax and keep it authentic, or do a real makeover?

Thanks for that interesting story, I hope that PX10 is still on the road in France. I did restore this one, I've made a video about it. I think these PX10s are wonderful bikes. Thanks

I think it's beautiful, as is, but then, I always think they are beautiful. Really a classic, and a bicycle that any bicycle enthusiast would be interested in rehabbing. I'm of the wabi sabi bicycle rehab philosophy, which is to say, that we all bear our usage and scars of time, that they are part of us and our unique story, and thus add to our whole.

I agree completely, I would rather restore it than respray it and completely rebuild it with new parts. It has a soul that I think should be kept as much as possible!

First thing I would do is place several drops of 30wt motor oil into the hub oil ports. The ones with the clips over the middle of the front and and rear hubs. Maybe you can save the cost of the bearings, if there still good. Remember oil those clips covering the middle section of the hubs. Does your bike have a drain hole under the bottom bracket? Europe may have been different than Usa .Ill take another look I think you have a competition PX10 E. Possibly used by the Peugeot team! Check the serial number against known Peugeot cycle team owners you may even have Eddi Merckyxs bicycle! Im only speculating . How cool is that? Youl have to check known serial numbers owned by Eddie Merckyx. That may be impossible. On the other hand maybe not. Now I would like to examine your bicycle again, and I will say goodnight for the evening. Bye!

Apparently your Px10E has no drain plug under the bottom bracket. That may be because its early or european or French origin. I DO NOT KNOW. CHECK FOR RUST IN THE BOTTOM BRACKET AND BEARING RACES AS WELL AS CRANK SPINDLE. I WOULD DO THAT AFTER SQIRTING SOME OIL INTO THE HUBS CLIPS. YOU LUCKY FELLOW! BYE!

You have a nationalized Peugeot PX 10 E. The components are white nylon because the bicycle was sold in France. My remarks are only my opinion, I am not a Peugeot expert. I have owned at least 5 Peugeots Px10 E models through the years. I have toured the Louar valley in France in the 1980s on an A-08 Peugeot which our group assembled in Austria at a 5 star hotel front lawn. My remarks about the white simplex criterium front deraleur are speculative only. At first I thought the rims were not original however being that you bought the bicycle in France the atom rims may very well be original. Most of my Px 10s had Mavic montlery Record du Mond similar to Eugene A.Sloans photograph of the well appointed Px 10 of the 1960s U.S.A. variant. Your Px10 is not top of the line.Nor were my Peugeot Px10s. There were 1 or 2 grades even higher than the Px10 E. Some came in baby blue with gold accents and special touring packages. Some px10E variants above the px10 E had Campagnolo rear deraileurs and so forth. I know this seems odd because France probably disliked the Italians. I do believe I saw some hard copy brochures with Pl 10s or the model up from Px10E with Campagnolo componants. Dont ask me why, I just seem to remember that. The fad when I was growing up was the racers were tapping the rear fork lobe with 10mm taps and installing Campagnolo Neuvo Record rear deraileurs. My dad wanted to be competetive so he had his Px10 tapped for a Campagnolo Neuvo Record derailer he had bought. He bought me one also however I cant remember if it was tapped and installed or if I kept the original simplex criterion installed. Back to your bike I believe you have a better frame than my fathers or mine because the French kept the best of their work for retail in France. ( my opinion only, I may be mistaken) you have a honey of a bike If you bought it in France! I suspect the brazing and lugs were first rate as I believe the U.S. probably got blems. The componant groups were often built up on the spot at the dealers so some variances were inevitable depending on inventory of a particular bicycle shop. Those in the Sloan photograph I consider as normal coponants for the U.S.A. market. Normandy lux hubs cresant spokes Hutchinson sewups or De alesandro sewups simplex head set atom stem not sure about the handlebars. Mavic gum rubber covers for brake levers simplex seat post brooks pro.racing saddle etc. Hope Ive been of some help. ENJOY YOUR RESTORATION. ERA BIKE AND SKI IN PENSYVANIA MAY STILL HAVE SEW UP TIRES. I DONT KNOW. HAPPY CYCLING.
