People seem to forget that galv is a sacrificial coating. A bare galv chassis will probably outlive many other components, but if you paint it, it will last longer still. Looking epic

@@overlandingrobin Let me put this little observation in here, by applying the first layer of primer on the galvanized chassis, probably gat a much better coverage coat of the initial layer of the primer and you most likely gained a better adhesion of the second coat of primer over the galvanized chassis! I know that painting the first primer coat was hard on your back, but that method is going to pay huge dividends down the road after years of use! As far as I can see, you’re knocking this outta the park!

Exactly right, so many people put new galvanised chassis on land rovers here in the uk but lots leave them bare and don’t realise the road salt will still cause rust after a good hile

Its going to be such a cool truck when it's done, and its great to see you doing it the right way and fixing whatever needs to be fixed. I don't know if you've already thought of this but I would recommend sealing along the edges of the reinforcement plate with a polyurethane sealant so you don't get the same problem with moisture.

Here in Sweden you can buy adapter plates for replacing the thirsty Volvo engine to a Mercedes diesel. I can’t recommend that conversion enough, as you will get a much stronger and fuel efficient vehicle 👍😀

@@overlandingrobin The best way to gain subscribers is to use the analytics to see which videos and subject matter gets the most views. Hopefully learning what your audience likes aligns with your personal goals with your channel. If that’s not what you learn from the analytics, that the most viewed videos don’t align with where you want your channel to go, maybe you can use the information from that to help you better tailor your content to attract more viewers and still have your content follow your plans for your channel. I was intrigued by the thumbnail for this video because I once did a frame off restoration, but wasn’t able to move the project forward after I had the frame blasted, coated in an epoxy coating that is virtually bulletproof(the chassis dropped off the end of the forklift they used to load the coated chassis on the trailer, one of three forks slid up the inside of the chassis and only managed to take a little “shine” off the coating)! Upon getting the chassis back to put it back on the axles we saw that we were going to have to drill out some of the holes the chassis had for mounting points because the coating was blocking those mounting points, the next discovery was that the drill bits had a hell of time cutting through the coating! I was impressed by the durability of the coating and frustrated at the same time because of all the work I was going to have to do just to get my axles mounted under the chassis again(not to mention all the other little or not so little points for other fasteners to mount fuel lines, brake lines, and every other thing that had to be reattached to the chassis!

Awesome job on the chassis! Another thing that can help your chassis last longer is using Waxoyl on the inside of the chassis. It forms a protective layer that will help keep rust from developing where you weren't able to paint.

Hey Robin. Just discovered your channel and really love your Volvo re-build. Binged a lot of the main vids, now I need to go back for a more detailed look. A couple of videos ago you mentioned going to Australia, where I live, and thought I could offer some help. If you were thinking of bringing Zuko, then start looking into it as soon as you can. Our animal quarantine laws are very strict, but it can be done, but I believe it can also be expensive. Many people choose to "do the lap" ..... to go around the whole country and they often try to do it within a 12 month time frame. This is so you can travel the Northern parts during Winter (it will still be 32 degC +) and travel the Southern areas during Summer, where it can still be hot, but livable. There are maps showing the preferred months to travel in each state. If you plan to bring the Volvo, it will be an expensive adventure, but it would be amazing. Again, our vehicle quarantine laws are tough, but are mostly about the car's cleanliness, roadworthiness and no leaks etc. Make sure you have a very strong Airconditioning system and your roof is insulated. You will need it. You will also need a good diesel heater as the nights in the desert and the ski resorts can be well below 0 degC. The hottest month is best spent in Tasmania where I live and you will need a full month to see everything here. Feel free to have a look at my Instagram - scottnned - for a few pics from our place near Hobart. Have a good New Year and I hope you make it here one day.

Corrosion ? My specialty as an aircraft mechanic was structural repair. A lot of my work was removing corrosion and doing the necessary repairs. No welding, but removing, and riveting in sections and fabricating parts. Very good tip on preparing a galvanized surface including prepping it in order to have the paint adhere . You're a very talented quick study.

Fantastic work. I’ve had many vehicles damaged destroyed by corrosion, it’s an extreme problem in Canada. It’s so bad that it is very difficult to maintain vehicles beyond 15 years. The condition of the frame of your vehicle would be considered nearly new. Important to add some type of corrosion protection inside the frame. 3m, liquid film, etc. When you mention sandblasting the entire body, we tend to avoid this process. The reason we don’t completely strip/sand blast the entire vehicle is that the original paint is a layer of protection that is very difficult to duplicate if you remove paints sealers and the body back to bare metal. If you only remove and repair and paint rusted areas seems to have better longevity for non show vehicles. If the vehicle is going to be winter driven anything and everything you can do to prevent rust will help.

Hello, I just stumbled over your video and I don’t know a lot about cars, and especially about how to conserve, or repair a rusty chassis. Your video answered a lot of questions I was always curious about. At the same time, a few more questions popped up. I keep looking at the welding that was done to the chassis. If I am not mistaking (note to myself: is „mistaking“ even a word, or should it be „mistaken“?) you chiselled and ground off the top of the main „booms“ (sorry, I am German and I grew up with dubbed films, lol) So, getting to the point, why did you leave slits in the newly welded tops? Is it to avoid condensation inside a completely sealed boom? Or would a full welding job possibly warp the chassis? Also, are you planning to further seal the inside by applying wax or this other stuff (Unterbodenschutz) that looks like tar? What do you consider the „dos“ and „don’ts“ when conserving metal from rust? Oh, and I completely agree with your point that a galvanised chassis would look „out of place“ on your vehicle… on _any_ vehicle to be perfectly honest😅. Much love from Germany 🇩🇪 ❤

Sandblasting doesn’t have a benefit over thermal stripping. Even the guys at the galvanising plant told me it’s money wasted as it goes into an acid bath prior to galvanising. powdercoat is nice but not so easy to fix on the road, it’s why I choose to paint it.

People also don’t realize the low cost versus the benefits of galvanizing the frame.

Als je helemaal over de top wil gaan met het chassis, dan kun je de binnenkant nog behandelen met waxoyl. Bedankt voor de info over een gegalvaniseerd chassis schilderen dan wel spuiten.

@overlandingrobin yeah... You do look like you know what you are doing, so I don't want to lecture you. Just please be careful. I've seen enough near misses and accidents.

This is a Volvo? I thought it was a Land Rover 101 forward control! Evidently they’re very similar looking! 😂
