This was a good one!! A couple years ago I wanted a faster boat but couldn’t afford it. After watching your Sleekcraft and Merc Mondays videos I bought an old boat for $1000 and fixed it up myself. I have a restoration video on my channel about it! Those videos gave me the confidence I needed to tackle that project, thanks guys!

I picked up a 1978 SeaRay 197 about 12 years ago that a 80 year old guy had donated to a charity and they then had it for sale on Ebay. I was high bidder at $2450 and never saw the boat in person, just the pictures on Ebay. Went and picked it up and this boat is probably the nicest all original 197 around. Must have always been garage kept with all original carpet and seats in excellent condition on a rust free tandem axle EZ loader trailer. It even has the camper canvas in the original plastic bags that looks like it was never used. Hard to beat the styling of those older SeaRay's. It's my thumbnail picture and can't imagine ever selling it. Great job on the restoration and giving the old girl a second life and super cool that it's back with the original family!

Just came across this channel. THIS story brought me to subscribe. Had a 16' 79 Starcraft Kingfisher I sold about ten years ago. Inherited it from my dad when he passed and kept it for a few years before finally selling since I didn't use it very much so it sat on the trailer most of the time. 3 years ago I purchased a home in a lake community. Not a day goes by now when I don't miss that boat. So many great memories of fishing, crabbing, and water skiing with that boat!Thanks for your restoration efforts as well as reuniting it with its old family! Look forward to all your future projects!

"You did good Rob" - You both get the W! All the innuendos and including the handoff reveals behind-the-scenes real life impact - not just restoration of possessions. A loving couple creating change. I'd love to be your neighbor. "Again with the noise you two? Ok, show me what will live for another generation to enjoy". On your engineering endeavors - Not everyone shows in their work that they pay attention to every detail. This makes all the difference between a success, and a huge success. You have it in you! Grand slam production!

Thanks Zozzed! Was pretty happy in how this one came together. Right now I'm working on a classic Jaguar XJ6 with triple SUs and a manual trans swap. They were only sold here with twin carbs and automatics. First drive yesterday! And thanks for the vote of confidence; sure would be cool if I could find some work, but the market is so weird right now. I feel like it's nothing but a bunch of bots posting jobs and reviewing resumes. It's insane.

Dear Badger, YES! You two are Angels to the spirit of boating. Note the Sea Ray detail to teak and railings. A true deep V with no pad. Did you hear Green Bay calling? Sturgeon Bay? That hull is seaworthy. Ps: we named our 78 SR The “Penetrator”

Yeah, very high freeboard on this thing; the bow is higher than the 23' Sorrento from the last video. When my dad got this thing, I really didn't get it. It looked awful, and I didn't like the design as it looked like any other open bow to me. After living with it a while, it really is different; the hull as you mentioned is great for rough water, the tall yacht like bow rails, and the super classy teak armrests/rails near the stern.... plus the helm is super cool too. What a great boat. I wish the new owners many years of awesome memories.

Thanks, only way forward is ... forward? I'm trying to transition from how to tech videos to long format videos, as they seem to perform a million times better. And honestly it seems like the how to videos, while helpful, actually hurt the channel because most subscribers scroll past them, which means my next video is less likely to even get shown to them, and it's a viscous cycle of that. I tried focusing on marine content for a year, but it didn't really help either. It's a fickle beast.

Wow, another great video, glad to see it's getting good views as well. As someone who get accused of putting way too much sentimental value on things that I own (one reason which causes me to accumlate stuff), I love the story telling aspect about these old boats - in the case of this one, not just that your dad had it but the memories that the the previous owner has of it as well. Super cool that you were able to save it and get it back to him. We're all just temporary stewards of the cool old stuff that's still left. It's funny with learning to appreciate things your previously thought were ugly and didn't care much for. I've turned around like that on alot of the "less flashy" old stuff I didn't pay much mind to (in my case, older Alumacrafts, Lone Stars, etc.) I started smearing silicone grease on impellers awhile back as well, seemed like a good idea. Glad to see someone else thinks so. I don't mess much with outdrives, but doing on on them (at least in this case) actually looked easier than on an outboard. Nice job again, easy video to sit down and watch all the way through 👍

Thanks man, appreciate it! This one turned out great, it was so wild to get that note on the van one morning. I thought it was going to be someone complaining about the boat at first. Yeah.... I mean I still don't think this type of sea ray is my style, but I definitely think the tall dead rise, and tall bow rail is pretty cool, and the teak around the stern is just so awesome. Nobody does that anymore except yachts. Aluminum boats are always pretty cool, my first boat was a 12' alumacraft with a 10 horse on the back. I beat the F out of that thing up in Minocqua. :)

when using atf in cylinders, i've learned that putting gasoline in the cylinders and cranking it without the plugs in afterwards will help the atf cycle out, mixing with the gasoline and decreasing the amount of smoke produced, and more importantly prevent fouling the plugs over and over! awesome video man!

Another great boat project. You are right the feeling of getting an old boat running again is priceless and something that cannot be bought. I restored a 1999 boat in 2003 that had an electrical fire in the rear compartment. Lots of damage and was minus the outboard. The on-board battery charger caught on fire. When I was done and took it out for the first time it was an amazing feeling. I bought the hull for next to nothing considering it was a high end boat. I am still running that same boat today. It has been an amazing boat and the memories it has provided are amazing.

Nicely done. I grew up boating on the Muskegon River in Michigan and later ended up with a very fast hot rod boat on Lake Michigan. I am a senior citizen living in Arizona now and really enjoy reminiscing about the old days on the water.

pretty cool! i like the old stuff much better than the new... i picked up a very neglected 1989 Reinell 173E with great bones and a seized motor back in 2017 for $500... a month later i had her on the water and spent the next couple years cleaning and restoring her completely... she's a beauty now and we just passed the 400 hour mark (since we've had her) a few weeks ago (8/30/24)... folks just have no idea what a bit of elbow grease, know how, vision and perseverance can do for an old boat where very few dollars are spent... thanks for sharing!

Hey Rob and Sarah, Jim here from near Traverse City Michigan. I am the guy that has the Glastron Carlson Rescues that has messaged you a few times. I am sending a link of this video to my younger son who I hope will get something from the message you expressed. I hope maybe he can see my boat resues and projects might have value other than going out and buying a boat everyone else has and not something special and unique. Would love to talk to you about design customization for my 1970 Glastron V234 Caribbean to make it convertable to an open bow from cuddy similar to the layout of a Chris Craft Launch of the last 15 years. Thanks again for all the content I relate to, most of my boats have the same 350 mercruiser Alpha one as yours in the video.

I've been boating for at least 56 years and I've had many boats but the most satisfying one I ever had was one that sat with no cover for about 8 years. It was a 21 ft rinker cuddy cabin with Mercury's four-banger in it. The guy had all the plugs wires distributor cap rotor you name it to get it running but never did it. Like you I let it sit for 2 or 3 days cuz it wouldn't turn after that I cranked it over by hand and it fired right up! Had a blast with that thing and got great mileage !

GREAT JOB !! Soon as you turned your attention to the trainer, I was like NOOOOOOOoooooo !! I have heard so many horror stories about the affects of those roller-bunks on boat hulls. I dunk my trailer in salt water and I have found that about 90% of my trailer light issues were ground issues. I gave up on the "Chassis Ground" method of trailer light wiring. I now run a ground wire from the white wire on the pig-tail to the ground post on each light fixture.
@ADDvanced
@ADDvanced Ай бұрын
I think rollers are okay for overbuilt, smaller boats. As the weight goes up, bunks are superior to help spread out the load. For a smaller boat, it's less important. For a raceboat, with lighter layup and maybe less strength, bunks also make more sense.

We’ve had several boats, and our kids grew up on the water. We have so many memories parking at the islands off the Norwalk shore, crossing over to Long Island overnight at oyster Bay and Bayville fishing with my son. Many trips over to Northport for the day. That’s with the 28 foot Sea Ray. and before that we had a 17 foot Sea Ray we bought back in 87 that we took on the lake and took camping with us many times so yes you’re absolutely correct as much time ,energy, and money as I’ve spent on the boats during the course of the years it’s precious memories that are the best

When the engine is cold you gotta pump the control handle to actuate the accelerator pump in the carb! This shoots extra fuel to help cold starting. I do 3 pumps, then give it a little throttle and crank for 3-5 seconds, if it doesn’t start, repeat the process.

Warning ⚠️ to anyone who owns a metal funnel with a flexible spout like this one at 4:18. If the spout ever gets stuck and you try to pull it out. The funnel will separate from the spout and when it does it’s like gripping razor blades and pulling them through your hand. After 60 stitches I should know. My advice throw them in the garbage. Enjoyed the video guys!

To be faiirrrrrr, I didn't have any problems with the stern drive, it was just a 350 SBC that hadn't been run in almost 2 decades. I love the 350/Alpha combo, great power, cheap to repair, and simple. Unfortunately I was dealing with a failing ignition system, fuel system, and bad gas all at the same time. I like outboards too, but today's outboards are too heavy, and unaffordable for most of the working class. They are becoming more of a luxury product catered to the 1%.
