Yups. Plus his pattern makes me wonder if Anthony would've went thee extra mile to provide if Cutty hadnt been involved.. it seems like.. similar to Earn from ATLANTA (series).. Earn would often only try to be a 'Man' when another Man was being a Man for his woman. &/Or when he felt like he was about to lose her.. it wasnt about protecting and providing for the woman and his child who he loves.. but out of Pride & Ego & To Impress other Men.. And that's the same thing i got from Anthony..

As a former war vet myself, I understood why Anthony didn’t write his family. On the surface to those who had not been exposed to the dynamics of a combat theater, he was selfish, inconsiderate, and cold hearted. Some would say that he could’ve wrote his family since he kept in touch with Kirby. Thing was he never had a connection to his girl and their baby as a family unit. All the while he was in war, the concept of being a father was a foreign thought that never entered into his mind. He chose not to distract himself by an imaginary house with a picket fence with a baby he had never seen, and a woman he barely knew. Writing Kirby was his outlet to relief all of the atrocities of war that he was surrounded by. Kirby, himself, was a Korean War veteran. Anthony knew that Kirby knew all the bullshit he was going through. Now to why he didn’t write his father, who was a former marine, I believe that he didn’t develop that type of relationship with him so he could open up to him. OAN, Cutty was in it for the cutty, lol! He wanted to show he had pull over Juanita, even if Anthony had moved in. The moment she took his money the second time, she showed Anthony what was up. Ptsd, unemployment, an ungrateful partner, and being black in a racist society, will make a dog snap the f@&# up. Heavy external pressures pounding down on the delicate mental is a hell only a few can make it out unscathed. I don’t condone Anthony’s means to an end, but I can’t knock the shit either

it wasn't until the second time Anthony really flipped. I think this was a Technical flaw in the movie that Anthony came back essentially broke. He explained he didn't develop any habits (Drugs, Sex, Gambling) while in the military. If he returned back with money, they would be less likely to rob a truck.

As someone who has Military family members that served in Vietnam. The G.I Bill and military loans weren’t always optional to vets especially black vets like how it is today. I’ve heard stories of how they would purposely dis-honorably discharge people for the sake of not acquiring loans or pulling a medical. Many wounded Vietnam vets came home with no coverages or aid. Some even ended up homeless on the street or worse dead. You can’t take the modern military era and apply it to the time period back then. It doesn’t work that way.

18:01 “The MoFo this side of Nicky Barnes, my boss man Cutty.” He ran smack operation in The Bronx. Growing up, I constantly heard stories about my father before he enlisted in 1980 from his aunts, friends, and parents. For two years I lived with his mother (my nana). Before that all I knew of him was Marine Corps. I thought our family was rich. I barely knew any extended family due to my parents being stationed overseas. So at 11 I begin learning my father was a player during the seventies. First time I watched “Superfly” he told me how that movie inspired him to sell drugs. He once told me cats were different back then. Players had wives, and a girlfriend or two. With that said, I think Cutty did that. Put the wife in a house in the burbs, then kept his distance to shield his family from the consequences of his playing the smack game.

Chileee this is my favorite movie so it’s near and dear to my heart. I think Juanita was crying because she lost her best friends one being her high school sweetheart, and the other being her sister. From what we seen in the movie her and Delilah had a good relationship. It was always weird that Anthony kind of flirted with Delilah. But that’s just me. He also couldn’t adapt well when he came out of the war out he was even more confused than before. I feel what Delilah was talking about as far as being part of the black panther movement soothed Anthony because of what they stood for, and Anthony felt that he was done wrong by America or the Man. Versus Juanita, the mother of his kids she’s working as a nurse’s aid and she’s the breadwinner and has been footing the bill since graduation. Where Delilah has no responsibilities. Also, Anthony needed to seek help and Anthony never did seek help to heal from trauma. They never actually got a real chance to be boyfriend and girlfriend, and then parents that was stripped of them when he decided to go to the war because and the only reason he went to the war is because he thought that would make a man out of him trying to follow in his father’s footsteps. Kirby went to war to both male role models in your life the war and he felt that war equals to you becoming a man. Then going to the war caused even more problems. Anthony was just searching for himself and the outcome that he got was a horrible one.

The planning of the robbery was the downfall of everything...putting a extra man on the corner w Skip was a bad idea, the get away car was too far from the robbery, Joe not knowing how many armor truck guards was on in the trucks, and where Anthony and Joe was hiding at was VERY BAD choice to hide...the truck backed into the dock leaving the driver and passenger side mirror looking directly at the bottom of the stairs...him going to war would've led to a bad outcome, he would've most likely became a junkie or a drunk...the planning of the Robbery is the dividing factor

Chill in the city they just committed a heist in for days, or even weeks, going to the hood and giving poor folk turkeys and toys 🤦🏽♂️. This movie is top 5 all time for me. But the ending kills me. Oh, yes! Bringing in Cleon was a huge mistake! When the police officer came along, Cleon froze up just like Skip did in Vietnam. Moreover, Cleon's demeanor actually made the police officer suspicious of him, and as we saw, Cleon ratted everyone else out. Another grave mistake they made was sticking around afterwards. They all should have left New York IMMEDIATELY. It made absolutely NO SENSE at all to stay in New York after the fact. They could have gone down south or possibly up to Canada. When Kirby and Anthony finally decided to leave town towards the end of the film, It was too late by then because the police were already closing in on them after Cleon ratted them out to the police. I neglected to mention that Joe blowing up the armored truck was also a huge mistake and was completely unnecessary because all of the money in the truck could have been completely destroyed; thus defeating the purpose of the robbery.

Cuddy didn't care at all because look at it from a logical standpoint. If he really cared then why didn't he let her stay at his house? That dude probably has a few women on the hook and keeps them around just in case he falls off or needs a place to stash the illegal items at. He doesn't need respect because no matter how noble he is his lifestyle creates enemies and enemies will hurt people who that person cares about. it wasn't like he was James St Patrick trying to get out of the game. Far as Delilah and Anthony being together I say it would have been good if Juanita didn't have his children because then it would have been awkward. What if Delilah and Anthony had a child after him and Juanita how would the Thanksgiving dinners be? Hey kids, let's go to your grandmothers house so you can see your sister/cousin, NO! 😂

They only talked a little about how Juanita lived before Anthony came back. She and Cuddy might've been living together, but his lifestyle was too much for her, causing them to break up. Men like Cuddy aren't usually one-woman men. His lifestyle also came with the risk of them getting killed, robbed, or arrested at any time. That roach-infested apartment might've felt like peace for her. I also think Anthony waited until he found a job to see Juanita because if he didn't find a job, he would leave town again.

What about the poor kids/ families in the neighborhood that they gave Christmas presents & the turkeys to? It makes the most sense that they used Delilah's cut to do that which is most likely given her character the type of thing she would've done herself had she lived on. Hasn't it occured to anybody that at some point behind the scenes or in a deleted scene, she expressed exactly what she wanted to do with her cut & Anthony was only doing what she may have wanted him to do with it? Some trivia also: there are deleted scenes that have not seen the light of day. Btw, I'm loving these videos lol

DooWop, I'm not buying that Anthony was doing Delilah's will with that money because they didn't take her while cut and do anything with it. They split it amongst themselves. Yes Anthony gave part of his money away, but that was part of HIS cut. You never hear him say anything else about Delilah. That action was his will and feeding his own ego. It had nothing to do with Delilah or what she would have wanted.

I kind of see why Deliliah didn't get her split post death. The money would have either went to: 1. Her parents 2. The Black Panther organization 3. Juanita 1. Her parents I'm guessing that it would be highly likely that her parents DONT accept the money. Also they just lost Delilah to the Robbery so they might be inclined to tell the authorities and even if they don't, I'm sure the COPS would be paying extra attention to their movements and transactions after knowing that Juanita took part in the Robbery. 2. The Black Panther Organization The Black Panther Organization around that time was most likely already under deep infiltration from the FEDS. Knowing that Juanita took part in the Robbery the Organization would be the first place for them to look and any suspected increase of spending, the FEDS would have cracked down hard. 3. Juanita My guess is most of Anthony's money was intending to go to her anyways. 1/3 of the money going to her would have been too much I'm thinking from the rest of the group. My guess is Anthony's intention was if Bokeem didn't spend his money recklessly was to wait for it to die down and try to get back with Juanita possibly trying to get them to leave New York for good. $60000 in early 1970s was alot of money and they could have bought a house for like $20000 in a much cheaper slower paced city in the with still much money to spare.

When i first seen this movie when i was a teen i didn’t blame him from robbing the truck but now as acult that works for the department of veteran affairs its so much benefit he could get . If he has ptsd he could got compensation for that , education benefits, health care he even could have got a job with the VA because veterans get preference over civilians, but the thing is this was in the 70s so I’m not sure how much he would have got been a black veteran so we do got to keep that in mind . Racism was still in full effect back then

It's hard to say that staying in the military would have been better for Anthony. The Vietnam War stopped in like the mid 70s. One or two extra years is a long time when you are at War. From his perspective, it increases the chances of him being killed. It also alienates him further from Juanita and his daughter. I think he wanted to come home to Juanita and his daughter. Also from Anthony's perspective, he has no idea on how long the War will last as he can't predict the future like we can. If he joined the military in a non War time, this would have been a different movie as he would have most likely written home, called, or even visited and probably got married to Juanita while in Service. I wonder though why Anthony decided to not be a Cop or work for a Security firm after coming home. I think he would have gotten a job fairly easily with his credentials. The pay would have probably been a little better than his butcher job and more stable and he would have had a better chance of moving up the ladder. His military record didn't mean much to most employers but a Police force or Security firm would have most likely hired him because of his record.

This movie hits different now that i’m an adult and retired military. Anthony would have been better off with Delilah and he should have stayed in the military & got stationed away from home & expanded his horizons. Cutty was a pimp and he was using Juanita. Can we please get reviews on the following black military movies: A Soldier’s Story The Tuskgee Airmen The Walking Dead (Not the AMC series) Antwone Fisher Red Tails

This movie is actually based on a true story from an anthology book full of memoirs of experiences from Black soldiers in Vietnam called "Bloods". It was Kirkland (aka Ari S. Merretazon), whose true story was detailed in the book Bloods: An Oral History of the Vietnam
@jsmacks11 Жыл бұрын
I think Anthony not joining the military might have improved his life a bit. If he didn't join, he would have most likely stayed with his girlfriend and most likely married her. He probably would have got a normal 9 to 5 job. While he had some criminal influences before the military, I don't see him really inclined to a criminal life. One thing Anthony did seem to have was focus. I think he would have tried his best to make the best out of the situation. Maybe he would have had temptations into the criminal life but I think with minimal street experience, combat experience he would have tried to keep away. I see him somewhat distancing himself from his friends who go to military. Maybe him and his baby mama don't stay together but it probably would be a much cleaner breakup than what happens in the movie. But what could lead him down the criminal path is whether there are no jobs or not for him. But I would see him more or less as a small time criminal than someone who robs trucks. That said based off of the movie I somewhat see him joining the military as inevitable. A healthy, mentally competent, no criminal record Black individual was a perfect candidate for the military, that's why all of his friends ended up there as some clearly did not want to go.

NEW SUB! Glad i found your channel and really enjoyed the deep dive to what i think one of the best America Saga films in Dead Presidents. It really needs to be regarded to that standard. The story is the classic tale of tragic figures in America bucking the system, yet, falling prey to the system. You see it from films in the golden age of White Heat in Cagney to the works of Scorcese. Butch Cassidy and Sundance, etc. Back to the "What if" of this narrative. Honestly, i think the heist would have worked. Even with all the same players except you switch the positions of Skip and Cleon when that beat cop came in. OR, if Skip came over and talked his way, even when things popped off Skip would have blindsided the Cop-sad to type-they would have made it out.

I think the responses easily prove how sexist our culture can truly be, and shows the level of disdain people have for women for no apparent reason. And the sad part is that many women have experienced a deadbeat similar to Anthony, but will still defend other men just like him. Also, this movie is a great example of what black people mean when we say that we don't want to stand for that damn national anthem. You had all those men shipped off to Vietnam and they left being called the n-word and called back to the same Jim crow system, just redesigned in the form of economic oppression.

Not that he didn't kinda deserve it, but it seemed like she got pregnant the second time way too fast and Cutty was still dropping money on her. I don't believe Cutty does things with no strings attached. So that's why I believe the first child is his, the second child isn't.

Cutty was no pimp because you never see him with other women. Pimps and drug dealers weren't one and the same. Juanita was a woman he cared for and financially provided for Sarah. I'm sure Cutty had many women that he was dating, and Juanita was just one of his many jump offs.

I can somewhat understand why he messaged Kirby an not Juanita. Kirby was a vet himself. So he understood what war was like. Talking to Kirby was his way of venting. Now while is at war he’s taking life day by day that’s how he survives. Thinking about Juanita would just make each day longer and longer. It would drive him crazy. Knowing he can’t be there, what if he doesn’t make it home? Distracting him from the dangers at hand. Back then ppl went to war expecting to die. It was different because we all have the mentality of making it back home to our families. At first we died for them but now we live for them. Unfortunately regardless of his reasoning he was a dead beat

I'm thinking Cutty was a pimp based off of his dress style (basically what the movie implies). if he wasn't a pimp he acted like one. Cowboy compared him to Nicky Barnes who was a Drug Dealer. Looking at Nicky Barnes dress code, was more of that of a respectable Business Man than a pimp. Nicky gives Organized crime vibes not necessarily pimp vibes. That said Cutty's flamboyant image could be more of Anthony's exaggerated imagination. From his mind he sees a guy in a nice suit, he is envisioning a Pimp. Nobody really says exactly what Cutty does, only that he is comparable to Nicky Barnes which implies Drug Dealer but not necessarily. He just could have been talking about how much money and power he has. There is also no reason why he couldn't have been both or neither and did something completely different. I think in the end it doesn't matter. We all know Cutty was a Criminal and a high ranking one, and have enough street skills to easily subdue a special forces Marine. Juanita had to know Cutty was a Criminal and relied on him while Anthony was gone (to what extent we don't really know). She continued to rely on him once Anthony came back.
