Yeah, I remember when my daughter was little she slept always with at least one arm up out of the covers. I wonder if it was because in the womb she was stuck in a transverse/breach position from about seven months and both her arms were up above her head. She never got into that classic folded up, ready to be born position and when she came out (via Caesarian) one of her hands was ‘glued’ to her head with vernix!

To the people who have an issue with this and calling it a 'straight jacket': Get over it! Some babies LOVE being swaddled, it helps them feel secure and calm down, especially when they are put down to sleep or nap, some babies hate it, which is fair enough. If a baby hates something, they WILL let you know, trust me, they will scream bloody murder, they do not suppress their feelings, heck, they even scream if the wind touches their face or they dont like hats. Before ya'll say, "oh, baby should be held to feel secure" blah blah, no s*it, but no parent can hold their baby 24/7, some parents need to put them down so they can shower, cook, clean, take care of other children, have a break etc People these days are super sensitive and claim EVERYTHING is 'cruel'... according to experts of the internet, the following is cruel; swaddling, hand mittons, not holding your baby 24/7, baby sleeping alone in a crib, using formula etc I once uploaded a photo of me resting my newborn niece on my legs and some moron said, "omg, be careful! baby's skin might get irritated from your denim jeans" good lord

I don't like swaddling and did not use it on my children. Babies need to stretch and not get cramps in the legs and arms. Think how you would feel if you swaddled yourself at night and couldn't move or adjust your comfort level. Let the babies breathe and stretch for goodness sake.
@lillibethj.s.703210 ай бұрын
When done properly, swaddling is comfortable for a newborn and only a newborn. “Properly” includes NO BUNTING, NO PILLOWS, NO ADDITIONAL BLANKETS, NO TOYS OF ANY KIND, NO BOTTLES … ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THE CRIB OR BASSINET, JUST THE BABY. When they wake and are unswaddled, they get the greatest stretches, and it’s as great of a release as it is for adults when they wake and stretch. If a baby learns to roll over early, then there’s no need to swaddle them. And obviously, if they are big babies, and outgrow a receiving blanket, it’s definitely time to stop swaddling. It’s common to see negative comments aimed towards Americans (I’m American) about the way we care for our babies, especially our newborns, but we see things from other countries that we find questionable or simply don’t understand. That doesn’t mean that our way is the ONLY WAY.

Babies are born with a natural reflex. (Moro reflex ) The reflex of feeling like it's falling. It looks like a startle reflex. See the baby's arms waving suddenly. That is the reflex. By swaddling/restricting for the first couple of months, the baby feels secure and won't have the reflex. It actually frightens the baby. The absence of the Moro reflex indicates something abnormal and should be reported to the healthcare provider. The result of eliminating the reflex is creating! a calmer baby. I bet she wakes frequently, doesn't she. Babies have a reflex startle response where they flail their arms to the side. It happens frequently when babies are asleep. When swaddled, the babies arms might spasm a little, but it rarely wakes them up, so they get longer periods of deeper, more restful sleep. Without swaddling, babies will frequently wake themselves up with this startle reflex, causing them to get less REM sleep. Babies will often fight being swaddled because they have begun to associate swaddling with sleep, and they want to resist going to sleep. Oftentimes, it's not the constriction that they object to, but sleeping.

@Khrysalis0110 ай бұрын
Swaddling is not just an America thing, Mary swaddled Jesus after he was born. My grandma who was Norwegian, taught us to swaddle. This guy got it wrong by placing the arms down, ideally the arms should be bent so the baby can feel like he is still in the womb and safe. You only swaddle them for the first couple of weeks or so, or until they adjust to being outside the womb. Having your baby sleep outside in subzero temperatures is mind boggling, I’m surprised they don’t have a frostbit face from this practice. Also, it’s more important for the baby to get sun on a pram walk as they need the vitamin D that the sun provides them. And they still get fresh air as well.

Two things come to mind here. One is that babies are ready to leave the womb when they are born. Swaddling limits skin-to-skin contact, which is very important, and also limits the baby from stretching. Babies stretch all the time with their arms and legs, just like we do. But they can't if they are wrapped like a burrito. Second thing is that we tend to over-blanket, over-clothe and otherwise smother babies with caps, mittens, body suits, etc. like they aren't already in a 74 degree living room. Babies get hot, and they cry because they are stifling. The harder they cry, the hotter they get, and we just keep wrapping those blankets around them.

My Mother taught me that trick 48 years ago when I had my first son. It worked like a charm then and I've no doubt it will be used as long as there are babies. You are such a great Dad.

My familly are all about this. My personal opinion: I refused to strap my baby up to restrict her movements and confine her. It’s controlling. She is free to move her limbs always. And she is doing great.

You do not understand the purpose! My god, I cannot believe people don't take 20csecibds to look up the PURPOSE {f swaddling. I hope these are not parents. The entire world lays information at your fingertips but emotion and feeeeelings. Look up the Moro reflex. Swaddle for 2 months max, always lay on their back.
@mariesoo619710 ай бұрын
Oh dear. So what I should have said (of course you are already aware of this, but it’s not mentioned). If anyone is considering “swaddling” be aware of unintentional suffocation if they roll onto their stomach. You will need to monitor so they don't roll over. Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows any signs of trying to roll over. Some babies start working on rolling as early as 2 months of age, but every baby is different. Btw being Middle Eastern it’s in our history and a parent I am. Kids Wernt swaddled despite grandma insisting , ‘tradition’ 🙄. In my kids cases there was no need as they didn’t cry constantly or have problems sleeping . But I understand you now. Hope baby gets through this phase. Good luck 🌈

Addition to your hack. Before you do the other arm bring the bottom up. Then do the other arm tucking in the extra fabric into the wrap.

Not all babies like to be swaddled. Mine didn't. The nurse came in and said, "Nonsense!!! All babies like to be swaddled!!!" 2 seconds after they were "swaddled" my kids pulled their arms out of the blanket. I thought, "See....I told you!!!" The nurse states in disappointment, "oh....I guess (my daughter) she doesn't like to be swaddled."
@charliecollins47778 ай бұрын
Some babies will resist at first but it is usually due to them being upset from the process of the swaddling. Swaddling, followed by shushing, swinging, and sometimes sucking/side lying (the 5 S's) is a guarantee calming experience for newborn babies. Colic is a myth of western cultures. You have to really make sure they get wrapped properly so their arms can't escape. Read the book "Happiest baby on the block". My son usually resists during the swaddling process but 20 seconds after is asleep...even if he started super upset. Swaddling prevents the reflex of flailing arms that will send a new born into a fit of rage.

Sorry but you did it wrong, you have to bring the bottom up before wrapping the right side, so 3rd step is the second step and vice versa.

I never did that with my baby, but he also didn’t flinch , so nothing woke him up. I wanted to give him the ability to move and he used to sleep from 7 pm until around 5 am in the morning. So no one ended up sleep deprived, but he did stay awake all day. He ended up being the tallest in the family lineup., over 6 foot. 👍

I really don’t like this idea baby needs to move his or her little hands and feet around. Just put the baby in regular clothing and a little blanket to keep him/ her warm this is way too much restriction
