While I could never have what Laura and Aaron have as far as gardens, Hartley etc. I could never be jealous or critical. It’s been a lot of hard work to get where they are and well deserved! If some people can’t appreciate that why bother watching? Opinions and conversations are also part of what I like about this. I learn from them as well. It saddens me that although it’s few, some seem to resent what others have and can be down right rude and hurtful. 😢

The area where you dug the roses looks so open and different now. It's going to flow with the rest of the property. Now that the boxwoods are gone, it's much less heavy. The openness is LIBERATING. I had a small garden at my home in Tulsa, OK 15 years ago and when I am looking at your channel it reminds me of my garden, but mine was a lot smaller. I do love that you and Aaron are such a good team. I worked in my garden alone and I had a small pond with a waterfall. My neighbor would say it was unnatural for a woman to drain the pond and clean it out after winter. I just remember it brought me such joy to clean out the pond. Getting the water clear with the correct ph level after so many leaves fell. Also working on my roses was just pure joy. I really enjoy your channel. That Auger looks awesome.

Orchids that bloom for the first time do the same thing as what you described your roses did. The second bloom cycle on an orchid is when you really see the true bloom color and also the fragrance ... if it happens to be fragrant. I am loving the cleared out back space. I would love to see your mother’s reaction. I’d probably cry. I broke my ankle last fall and had to have surgery. It took a long time before I was able to get much of anything done. Laura is such a gracious, thoughtful and loving daughter and I know her mother must be so thankful and delighted. Hope she got to graduate from the boot.

Oh my gosh, guys! A wooden bridge, with a little wooden railing on each side...the children will LOVE it ! At least do it for them. The memories of play running through the garden paths and up the bridge will be with them forever. We created all kinds of fun exciting things for our son and daughter and friends as best as budget would allow, and to hear them today, in their 30's chat, laugh and so excited to relive all the fun is just priceless to us. No regrets!

Laura, when I moved my (old) roses last year, I had the same issue, not able to save enough root ball. I cut the leaf canopy back quite hard (about half of the canopy) - and they've done really well this year. I'm in Australia, and in a similar dry climate (although not as cold a Winter as you get) and we are now in Spring and the roses have put on loads of new growth since the move.

Put a smaller 'foot traffic only' bridge OVER the pond and connect mulched path into the larger grass pathway. Plant heavily around the entrance and exit of the 'foot traffic only' path to promote the secret garden theme. Thus making the small bridge a secret destination point to stand and watch all the wildlife.

Question for Aaron: can he explain needing a bridge wide enough and low enough to accommodate the lawn mower? Wouldn't he be able to access both ends of the grass walking path without needing to cross the bridge? He could mow as close to the bridge as possible on each side and then use the trimmer to clean up the rest. I think a bridge over the pond would be so charming. I'm totally envisioning a smaller version of the gardens and bridge in Claude Monet's paintings with the weeping willow in the background and maybe some water lilies dotted across the pond. I know whatever you decide to do will end up looking beautiful, whether there is a bridge or not!

Good idea! Would love to see that. Think I'll do some research however I do think that 8 Acres could use a pond for wildlife! Think of all the new plantings and Wildlife that would come on to the property that is growing ever bigger. We had a Joseph's Coat climbing rose planted on the arbor to the entrance to our home and when our property burned in the wildfire in 2018 of course that rose burned too. However, a year later that rose came back with a little fresh green so we dug it up to move it to the new location of our house on that same property and barely got any rootball with it. That thing was gnarly. The top was scarred and burnt but I planted it anyway. From the graft up was gone so it came back from the root stock and is no longer the Joseph's Coat. That is one tough plant. It's just a pinkish red climbing rose but it is MASSIVE! It is one of the very few things left to me after the fire that took out everything we owned and built for over twenty years on ten acres and that rose is precious to me. I do cherish it and am so grateful to have it.

I love all the ideas and information on planting ... for me the struggle is keeping them thriving after the planting. We live in a similar high desert situation. Would be SUPER interested in watering systems, times, etc. or whatever follow up care plants need in order to get their legs under them and thrive. I would trim those roses harder, that way you will provide them more chance to live. You have cut the roots pretty hard, so it can't provide the canopy as it used to do.

I bought a house in Virginia that had an established yard with many different plants. On one side of the house was a rose bush. For several years it did nothing in the way of blooming. So I decided that I would give it one more chance to bloom. I stood over the bush and told it that I was going to dig it up and throw it away if it did not bloom for me in the spring. Well, come spring it bloomed a huge pale pink rose that was absolutely gorgeous and I hope it’s still blooming today, because I sold the house and moved back to Texas.

Oh do a bridge! I think you could still make one work! Maybe keep the main path grass but have a smaller (maybe your blue flagstone type) that goes to the bridge , then over the pond….maybe to a little bistro set area. On another pond note, my parents have a very shallow end (maybe 8” ish deep) and planted water plants in there and the frogs LOVE it! Therefore the kids LOVE that part! Once they realized that there was no way to keep the kids out from exploring that area, they added stepping stones so that the kids are stepping in the rights spots to not damage the underlayment.

Regarding the roses, with so little root system to support a rather large canopy, wouldn’t it be a good idea to cut the canopy way back in order for the plant to concentrate on root growth only and not trying to support top growth? Winter is coming anyway and the top isn’t going to be pretty until next Spring.

Agree! Have moved so many roses over the past 20 years and you always need to chop back by at least half so the roots can get going. Otherwise the canes die back and the plant suffers over the next season. But I wouldn't be surprised that Laura does that later anyway - she may have left them like that to show viewers how they would look in the landscape 😊

I always give my new roses three years, before I give up on them. The first few years they can be small, not as well coloured or continually ball, but give them time to settle in and show you what they are capable of.

I’m currently working on a rose garden that was planted in 1969 and hasn’t been really taken care of in the last 15-20 years. Your process sfor reimagining your space is very similar to mine. I too see your Hartley as an extension of your home and not for the large and particularly messy, large jobs of the garden but the prettier more scaled down and “cleaner” ones. I really appreciate you pointing out things that are thriving in your garden (superbena as a landscape plant) and those that aren’t. Maybe you could start your bridge with a platform of stone steps that the wooden bridge can then begin and end on, on both sides 😍

If you have some reflective ribbon, like metallic streamers, tied up near the row of wheat, it might help keep some of the birds away until germination. Maybe tie some to a few stakes in the row. You have enough wind that the movement will help scare them off.

That would absolutely be the perfect place for the pond! And a bridge?? It will be a beautiful wonderland! Imagine seeing that from the Hartley. The path walkways are great in the south garden, but will you be making the new grass path varying widths to make it more natural and meandering-like? Having the view limited from the Hartley by plantings may cause it to revert to the being used less and thought of mode it was in before. It had blight and it was not the tomato variety I though it was. So hoping my other tomato plant pulls through. I have treated it. But its still showing signs of blight. A pond would look awesome and if it is big enough you can add a bridge across one end. Have you thought of making part of the area a playground for the kids. Swingset, seesaw, monkey bars. Would be a good area for one now that it is open so you can see the kids from most areas of your backyard while your working.

Boxwoods are my nemesis! For me, they are a maintenance nightmare! I'm so happy that I replaced some of them with lavender! The lavender have had beautiful blooms, incredible fragrance, and have been extremely hardy and virtually maintenance free! 🙂

You could make a small concrete, brick, gravel, or flagstone landing for the bridge over the pond to make it work with the grass and mowing that Aaron was mentioning. It might be kind of nice to do that anyway so you could flank the bridge with benches or pots 😊

What most shows me the difference between my zone 6 in KY to your zone 6 is the simple fact you have pots, buckets, and other bowl-ish shaped items face up outdoors! 😆 As always, love all the progress ♥

Garden Answer is like my own Botanic Gardens. I live by the Chicago Botanic gardens and I love it seeing the finished gardens; but I want to see the design being put in and how they chose what they chose. 10/17/2022 in northern Indiana and southern Michigan we had our first snow. It is early morning of the 18th and snow is still on the ground, so winter has arrived, it was kind of a surprise, to us!!! I have a lot of cleanup to do. Good luck Laura, winter is soon going to be here!
