Toilet bowl clear is usually hydrochloric acid, the same thing in muriatic acid, but at a much higher concentration. CLR is lactic acid and gluconic acid. Vinegar is acetic acid. Evapo Rust is special in that it is designed to minimize eating the base metal while only attacking the rust. That probably impacts it's speed, but is going to leave you with more of good metal. Whether that outweighs the speed is up the user.

I have been using Lysol toilet bowl cleaner mixed equally with hydrogen peroxide to clean the bottom of my fiberglass boat for years now. Works excellent. It's saved me a ton of time compared to all the other expensive "boat hull" cleaners that were basically acids that would take longer, more elbow grease and burn your eyes and skin. Plus the Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and hydrogen peroxide mixture does not burn your skin or eyes as much. And it does not take all the wax off the fiberglass like the other more harsh acids. It just takes off the water scum and hydrocarbons on the fiberglass. And it's a fraction of the price vs. all other boat hull cleaners ! Rinses right off easily too.

I use Lemi Shine. It is used in dish washers and as the name implies, it is a citric product. Cleans tarnished brass very well. One needs to experiment with the quantity, temperature, and duration as it does not take much and too much will turn the brass orange. (I believe it will leach out the zinc from the brass if too much or too long.)

2:36 Many chemical reactions work best in the presence of water. For example, the Hydrochloric acid in toilet bowl cleaner will dissolve rust (and eventually the underlying metal) more effectively in a water solution than when concentrated. With fasteners, I usually just wire-brush the threads and apply some oil or anti-seize. For sheet metal, sand or sand-blast, then use a rust converter (Phosphoric acid, also found in Coca Cola) to convert any remaining Iron Oxide to Iron Phosphate. For smaller parts and hand tools, you can also use electrolysis to convert red iron oxide to black iron oxide (which can be wiped off).

Always like your video's Steve. Getting rid of rust takes time for most of the products to work well. You need to find some patience, (this coming from a guy who can't stand to let paint dry! My fingerprints are on everything I paint) As far as rust goes, I've tried most all the rust remover products and they all work about the same given time but if you really want quick get a bead plaster cabinet. Oh by the way Lye (drain opener or sodium hydroxide) will dissolve aluminum so be careful with that stuff. Be Safe.

Steve, love the channel. Just purchased a small HF ultrasonic cleaner and putting it through some tests. Haven’t tried rusty stuff yet but you gave me a great head start so a huge thank you for that 👍 I’ve been experimenting with cleaning neglected carburetors. As you know the rubber o-rings and gaskets don’t play well with carb cleaner so I’ve been using some general purpose cleaners in varying concentration with water. So far Crud Cutter in 1 part to 2 parts water has been working well to remove some ugly residue without and damage to the o-rings and gaskets. If you make part two to this video I would be curious to see some of your findings! Thanks again 👍👍👍👍👍

I seldom need rust removed quickly. As such I use electrolysis. A plastic container, Arm & Hammer washing soda, water, a sacrificial anode, and a power supply ("dumb" battery charger or a dedicated power supply) is all you need. It removes the rust without removing the base metal and it is self limiting... rust is gone the process stops.

Hello John ,ok one question would it affect the paint on a motorcycle gas tank ?
@johngrossbohlin7582
@johngrossbohlin7582 3 жыл бұрын
@@danieldenis593 If you submerged the whole tank and there is visible rust under the paint yes, it would likely affect the paint... For example, if there is a scratch in the paint and rust on the steel the rust may cover a bigger area than the scratch and the paint would loosen. If you're going to do the inside of the tank (e.g., fill the tank with water and washing soda and insert the sacrificial rod through the fill hole without letting it touch the tank) I wouldn't think it would be an issue unless there are pin holes under the rust. Me personally, I use this only if I don't care about the finish. I mostly do tools and machine parts and function is the important thing. For example, I have a set of auger bits that I inherited. They were nickel plated and used to be beautiful... unfortunately they had rusted from the salty humid air in FL. When they came out of electrolysis the nickel was gone... I was Okay with that as I wanted to use the bits not look at them. On the other hand, I've removed rust from the sole of hand planes using this method without removing the Japaning (the black finish)--there was no damage to the Japaning beforehand and thus no rust under it..

Hi Steve, I believe the TBC ( toilet bowl cleaner ) has a mild abrasive agent in its formula to help remove water deposits. I think that’s what helped to make it the clear winner. Amazing results indeed. I didn't expect that outcome at all. Since my experience with muriatic acid is this: A friend kept a container of muriatic acid with a somewhat leaky cap in his storageroom. This eventually did lead to all ferrous material in that room getting heavily corroded. My theory is that fumes of muriatic acid do combine with air moisture and condense on cold metallic surfaces. So why it does remove rust in your experiment really puzzles me. Seems as though a brief contact with that acid will remove rust, while a longer one will make it even worse.
@TylrVncnt
@TylrVncnt 2 жыл бұрын
Salt compounds could be a factor but also yeah mixing with evaporated water in the air will do this, needs to be at a certain concentration to remove rust, but it also must be noted that it will actually dissolve/remove (small) amounts of unrusted metal as well, especially the longer it stays in the solution. It can also cause the metal to weaken slightly (or greatly depending on concentration of the acid and length of exposure) this is called “hydrogen embrittlement” maybe google it, pretty interesting IMHO Evaporust is by *far* the best solution because it works in a completely different way than the others, it *only* attacks the rust, with no risk of dissolving any good metal or affecting its integrity in any way, and maybe the biggest benefit (in terms of $$ cost) *its reusable* many many times again and over again. It also works insanely fast IF (and only if) you heat the solution to 120 degrees F, speeds up the process exponentially.. and if you heat it AND use an ultrasonic it’s even faster.
@DC-ez8ts
@DC-ez8ts Жыл бұрын
It’s the humidity from the air (water vapor) that accelerated the rusting process. An acid will strip rust but left alone rust will come back with a vengeance on a stripped metal surface, more acid fumes will keep stripping the rust but rust will come back in a vicious cycle. That’s called flash rusting (same thing you see in your brake rotors if you don’t run car for awhile. The brake pads expose clean metal for humid air to oxidize.

one thing many of these tests don't have, and you were very thorough sounding, is how much metal is removed? and how much paint is removed? i use vinegar for files, it takes like 1-2 days before i get results i like, but it loosened the rust enough to sand blast, same with cast iron wrenches. the harder the metal the harder the rust. and i couldn't get it clean. vinegar helped there, it etches metal. though muratic in one test cleaned it in 5 min, but also ate the metal and it stinks something fierce. and you can't get it on your skin. which is probably why i'll get evaporust. though i saw very good things with krud cutter rust remover, but that's rather expensive. but it does come in a spray.

@TractorWrangler01
@TractorWrangler01 3 жыл бұрын
This would depend on what you are trying to rust "proof". Antiseize works good on car calipers ect but it does eventually surrender to weather water ect. It should stick around for the life of your brake pads though of your daily driver. Car doors...a little bit of Transfluid works great. Just enough that it moves from the front to the back of the door and vice versa during exceleration ect. If your trying to rust proof something like a fence post then paint is the way to go but make sure the post is extremely clean of any oils or fingerprints before you paint it. it will eventually give up due to weather but with the right paint it should last 20 years in a northern enviroment. In the case of athe underside of a car you can treat it with Fluid Film which is a thick oily almost grease like substance but it would really need to be done yearly. DO NOT use penetrating oil because that will get under your paint and make it peel away from the sheet metal. Go ahead ask me how I know....

Get a bar of swimming pool chlorine, put it in a cocktail glass, (Short Glass) and it's OK if you break it in half or in pieces, put the pieces in the glass and cover with clean gravel, and put it in the tank. You won't believe it! I accidentally discovered this cleaning the worst toilet you have ever seen, after it looked brand new. Try it.

Yup I made a diluted solution and cleaned some very far gone carburetors and wow..... It did strip off the gold colored plating on the steel bowls though. But 200ml in 3L of water may have been too strong. Not sure I'll be using it instead of ultrasonic cleaning solution but very interesting. It cleaned them completely in 5min!!!!

I love it! I would also like to see how phosphoric acid works. Some things like toilet bowl cleaners still contain it. I have had great luck cleaning carbs with it. It eats all kinds of corrosion. I have done some expersments with electro-polishing to clean dirty corroded carbs. It's electrolosys but uses the phosphoric acid. Bettween 25-35 seconds in the tank hooked up and the carb looks new, especiall brass parts.

I'm not sure how this would compare but I had some Zep calcium, lime & rust remover on my shelf for years & recently used it to remove rust stains from my porous concrete pavers which were stained by fertilizer. It totally remover all traces of the stains. Possible the stains was not rust but it did remove a rust stain under a faucet which has a leak onto some pavers from a galvanized fitting without any problem also.

Hi. Great work done, and very interesting topic. Most of these solvent tested is it's purpose to do a chemical process, and some of them need to sit for longer period to do its work. An ultrasonic cleaner is based on cavitation bubbles and it's mechanical force to do the work. I guess a cleaning solution mixed with different grinding material may speed up the process.?
