I love historical content too. But unless you just cannot stand fantasy in general, I'd recommend trying out Warhammer 2. It is a solid Total War game.

@@datalink7 its not about "standing" or anything. I dont know squat about Warhammer and I really love getting immersed in games, especially strategy. I want to put myself in the shoes of historical figures or factions and sort of create a scenario, roleplay etc. To do that with warfare $I'd have to research A TON, and I just dont think its worth it for one single setting

I've always loved Rome 1 because of siege battles, phalanx, and cavalry charges. I'm sad that cavalry is so crap in Warhammer.

If I were to say my true favourite mechanic from Rome 1 that will never be put into the games ever again it would be the fact that you can unlock factions by beating them. You can either win a campaign which unlocks all other factions or you can do what I did which is constantly restarting in order to leapfrog across the map unlocking people. I loved starting Brutii, beating Greek Cities, then going Greek Cities-Seleucid, Seleucid-Egypt, Egypt-Carthage. Then you could go back to Julii to take out the Gauls, etc. I'm sad that my preferred way to play the game is gone because now it's...paid dlc.

@@Grimwear Yeah, Med2 was the last game that let you unlock factions as you beat them. Honestly, Rome 1 was chock full of little features that were really cool and added to immersion, like the fact that recruitment drained population, or how geography was consistent in battles (for example, fighting near a city or wonder meant you could see it in the distance, or the huge variety of tra}its that meant your generals became proper characters that you remembered. Even Med 2 only kept the trait system. I like Warhammer but it makes me sad that features like these will probably never return to the series.

When you play as WRE you have to struggle to survive. When you play any other faction WRE don't have any problems. Best AI in any TW game lol.

I really love Medieval 2 and Rome TW vids. Always watch through. Currently going through your Scipio campaign from a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoying the roleplaying aspects. I mean, play what you want... but my two cents is that I really like roleplay series from those two games - because they were kinda just better built towards roleplaying.

18:00 I kinda disagree with Legend on that particular thing, regarding the Western Roman Empire. In my campaigns, establishing Christianity in the Eastern Empire was the easiest thing to do and matches with roleplay, considering Byzantines were Orthodox. However, forcing a universal religion on all western Roman provinces is a nightmare for public order and you can easily become seriously broke early on. What I did is going with what the majority of the population practised. I didn't impose christianity on Spain, Gaul and Britain, I didn't turn Southern Italy and Africa pagan, and my campaign ran smoothly. I only exterminated insolent bastards in Avaricum and Spain to make money but I didn't change the dominant religion. That is not very roleplayish though

18:20 It is perfectly viable to maintain both religions as WRE. Last time I played, I managed to get the christian Augustus killed and sent all the christian grnerals to Rome, Tarentum and Africa. The rest was pagan (Sol Invictus). I converted the Empire later, but mostly for flavor

It was probably a brilliant move letting enemy Warlords slaughter his entire army, only to build another better one. It's always the polite, nice ones you gotta watch out for. Western Roman Empire starts as a disaster! Winning it the first time depended on bridge battles and destroying most of my military infrastructure out side Italy and burning down England. Then manage the conversion of Italy to Christianity with bishops.

Rome 2 basically doesn't reward your strategy in battles. Stronger units always win while in Rome 1 you can whitstand a stronger enemy using clever tactics and maneuvers. Also campaign map in Rome 2 is horrible because most cities are just garbage villages and it's not possible to change that.

There's a directx .dll file you can download somewhere that fixes the issue. Don't remember where to find it but it shouldn't be too hard to google.

Not like it was anything new since many Roman Emperors weren't born Roman but rise through the ranks of the Legion and became the Emperor. Along the way, they would Romanized their name so you have plenty of weirdly named Roman Emperors.

Many reasons... They considered themselves to be romans, but if I recall well their official language since the 7th century is greek, and that would be the result of the growing influence of greek culture since the fall of Rome. Also the main power base of the empire was grece as well, so It naked sense ti consider them greeks, specially since the fall of the eastern provinces in the 7th century

All empires consist of multiple nations and often have leaders of different backgrounds. The most populous and / or richest nations is usually considered the "title" nation. Byzantine Empire - Greeks Roman Empire - Roman Latins Russian Empire - Russians Etc. Only empires with strong hereditary traditions have more or less "clean" ruling families, consisting solely from representatives of the title nation. An example would be England, but as we know even the English had Kings and Queens that weren't english.

They wanted to separate themselves from the latins, especially since the Reconquest of the West failed, they wanted to have their own society/culture. The Schism also helped a lot.
