Saw X honestly makes Saws 2 and 3 even better. By showing Amanda’s relationship with John prior to Saw 2, it adds the following… 1) By showing Amanda being unsure of whether she could carry on John’s legacy, it adds another reason for her to be in the Saw 2 house, as the ending of Saw 2 stated she had to be “reborn.” 2) By showing what she went through in Saw X, it helps you feel the emotional pain that Saw 3 indicates Amanda has gone through. It also plants the seeds that would be paid off in Saw 3 where she comes to the conclusion that “no one changes.” 3) By showing a early point in John and Amanda’s relationship, it helps you understand why Amanda cares so much for John and why she’s so distraught at him dying, which was indicated in Saw 3, but Saw X makes it clear she was connected and invested in John far more than any of his other apprentices, the only person rivaling this being Jill. This makes Saw 3’s ending sadder. Also by making John sympathetic in Saw X, in makes the reveals of his tragic past more emotional in Saw 4, making that film even better as well. So to me, Saw X is great for making Saws 2-4 even better. My belief with Saw 6 is that the “doctor in Norway” that John was talking to William about was Finn Pederson. Saw X does reveal Finn Pederson and nothing indicates he was a fraud, just his daughter Cecilia. So in a way it does work with that scene. As for the traps being so simple… it’s the same arguement I had regarding the 8th films traps (other than the Laser Collar)… the elaborate traps didn’t really start until Saw 3, by setting the 8th film main game and Saw X’s traps earlier in the timeline, they fit that part of the timeline, where John Kramer is in is the much earlier days of his work, whereas by Saw 3 his traps were the result of someone who had a lot of practice designing, building, and executing the traps. So it’s fine for them to be simple, and they’re more elaborate than the 8th film’s main game, which adds up since it takes place after those games. The mid-credits scene also allows for another way Hoffman can escape the bathroom, as revealing he had been there before means he could have placed something in the room in case he ever was trapped in there.

@@sinistercinemareviews5420 Good to hear. Also, the scene where he bonds with the kid makes the scene of him losing his own child in Saw 4 sadder because we now got a glimpse of what he would have been like as a father. Forgot to mention that, after mulling it over I realized it.

I feel you on the continuity thing…like I was kinda thinking Kerry would show up or something, or any of those central characters, given the time in which Saw X takes place. I did really like how John was so much of the focus - the first 45 minutes felt like a straight-up character study/drama before the tone changed. It’s definitely the most straightforward one too. I think we could have gotten more stylized traps, more Billy, and stuff like that but overall I was really into it and enjoyed it. Way better than Jigsaw and Spiral

This is why this channel is one if not the best horror channel. So many reviews have just said it’s the best saw ever 🤷🏻‍♂️ universally. I’m with Jason. It wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t terrible. 7/10. I didn’t care at all for the people in the traps and the traps weren’t memorable. Though loved seeing Tobin Bell at 81 give us a full length saw film which should have been done before. Loved the mid scene credits

I disagree. Normally I'm with you. But Saw was known for moving quickly on sequels. And they were good at it. The wait for the last couple films hurt it. When the Saw films strike when the iron is hot and get moving on the next one quickly, it actually helps them. Not the case for other franchises. But this one is different in that regard. No

Hey there! An old, hardcore Saw fan here as well! I used to watch them religiously when I was younger, but not anymore. I still highly praise it as my favorite horror franchise of all time. My personal opinion of the movie in the grand scheme of things: A compelling, stand-alone character piece about John Kramer that fits well in the series. I was pleasantly surprised after the somewhat diluted and uninspired sequels that came before it, i.e. Saw 3D (my least favorite in the franchise, period), Jigsaw and Spiral (while they had great concepts and ''different'' tones, it felt like the same old, generic Saw film). Definitely the best sequel since Saw VI. Hell, even since Saw II. Not your typical Saw film, that's for sure. I actually appreciated the bold risks the writers took in this one. You can definitely sympathize more with John, even Amanda. I felt zero empathy for the victims despite them being somewhat fleshed out enough to make us "care" for them, except maybe Gabriela and Mateo, but that's another thing. Why? Their performances were incredible all across the board, mostly Tobin Bell. The acting felt more natural this time around, not that it was atrocious all the time in the series (some of the films suffered more from poor dialogue and direction than bad acting in my opinion). To me though, it does have the look and the tone of a Saw movie, but with more solid writing and definitely more humanizing than any other Saw film. And to your point, even though the franchise feels convoluted as a series, I actually see it as "episodic" too. That's its biggest strength. No one can take this away from it. So yeah, overall, I enjoyed Saw X. A great prequel to the sequel, no pun intended. lol

@DeathTragedy666, Some great points. I agree with most of them. Do you think it (X) works better as Saw 2? I never got the individual love for Saw 2 because I can feel the heart of the story was not a Saw film. It began as a spec script of Bousman's with strangers in a house breathing in toxic fumes. Whannell turned it into a Saw sequel once Bousman was chosen to direct and agreed to tge compromise. It feels tweaked and turned into a Saw sequel with way too many characters. Like a Big Brother or MTV Real World episode stretched into a Saw movie. The beginning and ending feel tacked on and it just felt...off to me as a Saw film. Most people love it but I find Saw 3 much more compelling. and similar to Saw 1 tone-wise. You?

I really appreciate this review from fellow saw fans. It seems every review I've seen thus far has been from the casual crowd and I definitely appreciate a more seasoned reviewer when it comes to this franchise. That said, I really liked the movie as a fan of the franchise myself. It's definitely in the top half of all Saw movies for me. While I do enjoy the continuity aspects of the franchise (especially in 2-4), it's not the primary reason I am into it. I mostly like character work and the traps along with the twisting nature of every entry in the franchise. So naturally, I enjoyed this entry as it delves deeper into two of the series best characters. It's what i've always wanted in a Saw sequel, but never got. I always thought it was a huge mistake killing off both Amanda and John so early in the series, so I'm glad to see both of them back in the fray and getting a deeper look into each of their characters. I also actually enjoy the side story aspect of this movie as I got that same vibe about it as you all did. However, I had a weird hot take idea after walking out of the theater: spin this movie off into its own timeline and give us more Amanda, John, and Hoffman. Like I said previously, I think it was a huge mistake to kill off the central character and his first apprentice so early in the franchise. I think it would be interesting to see where it goes and what they do different as I think franchise mostly went off the rails after Saw 4 (with the exception of 6). Continuity or not, those later entries were stinkers in my opinion, even though they were still fun popcorn movies. I doubt they would go this route, but I think it would be fun to see.

I've never been a fan of the franchise, but this is my favorite. I just couldn't get over the cinematography and editing style of so many of them. X is much better and It has way more movie elements than previous sequels. It felt like a real movie as opposed to a trap anthology. Tobin Bell was great and Kramer finally got the focus he deserved. I enjoyed it and would welcome more Saw movies in this vein.

PS I think a combo of recency bias (even unintentional) and the low quality of the LAST 3 films makes this one seem better than it is in the grand scheme of the series. I totally agree with your stance on loving these movies based to how it goes back to the other sequels narratively, and how it fills in gaps. It’s intriguing how this is like a franchise Jigsaw puzzle. 1-7 did this pretty well. I also do love X’s character-arc based movie on John. Where would I rank this with the other 9? I still would not let this movie rank above 1-3. Those are the most desirable movies, looking at this from the franchise puzzle. X would definitely be above Jigsaw and Spiral, especially if these stories never get touched on again. 4-7, even though dips in everything, are compliments to 1-3, and achieve an interesting continuity more so than X. Id still rank X above 4, but below 3. In our perspective, the movie would have benefited with flashbacks to the early encounters of John and Amanda or Amanda first encountering the detective, or “The Detective” at work finding out the location of these people in Mexico. It’s understandable that this would disrupt the pace of the movie, and confuse the casual audience. So hopefully in the next movie, it would be a character arc-based movie between John, Amanda, and Hoffman, where Hoffman carries more of the story. Just the whole concept of this detective working on the Jigsaw killer case, who is one of the perpetrators is an interesting concept. Then the following sequel would no longer require John and Amanda, and finally we can get the continuation of where Saw 7 left us off with. This would be an amazing way to continue the franchise.

The thing about the traps in the three Josh Stolberg/Pete Goldfinger films is its missing something. And it took me a while but I finally figured out what it is. A lot of the traps in the original 7 (not all of them) all had some connecting theme or tie in into the person's "crime" Danica being chained in place so she couldn't run like she did with Jeff's son, William's policy, things like that These are just shitty people in random traps. Which can be fun. But it lacks that connection to their characters for the most part.

Totally hear you I’m a hardcore SAW fan. I grew to enjoy SAW X but man do I miss that connectivity the other films had. I am curious if your thoughts on the film have changed at all being 6 months later? I would like to also add this notion. With SAW XI coming it’s possible that connectivity could connect. Will it connect to the original set of films idk but it will definitely connect up to X since the movie left a few unanswered questions. When I saw the original 7 films back in the day I didn’t realize they connected up the way they do until I had all the puzzle pieces and binge watched them all straight up. Perhaps X and XI will do the same. Thoughts?

I did really enjoy the film, but once it hit the part with the bitchy woman getting the upper hand, and him planning for her to do it the whole time it started to feel a bit wonky. Plus it frustrated me that the evil woman (I never remember character names) was set up to be the "main" target that the film wants everyone to hate and see killed is then let off quite easy with an incredibly easy "trap" where all she has to do is kill the guy and it's just a no brainer for her. Man, I wanted her to have her face peeled off in a trap 😂 don't know what that says about me. But everything leading up to the final act I loved, then the ending just felt very unsatisfying and a little silly. I did love just seeing way more of John though, as we all do. And I would take this film over the previous 2 any day, even though I do enjoy those too.

If they need a plot for SAW XI-- Start the film with Hoffman being found by some Jigsaw fanatics in the bathroom and taken to jail. Jump forward ten years. Daniel Matthews is now a cop like his dad and is trying to avenge the person who taught him everything. He hears of a new Jigsaw murder and decides he's going to talk to Hoffman (who has been mute for ten years) about it. Let the interactions between Hoffman and Daniel be homage to The Silence of the Lambs. In the end, have Daniel manage to kidnap Hoffman and hold him up in the Wilson Steel Plant on a block of ice. Reveal Daniel to be a Jigsaw accomplice. Show footage of him and Logan Nelson being revealed as the two pig heads that helped Dr. Gordon kidnap Hoffman a decade ago. And when Hoffman realizes that he is in the exact same trap that killed Daniel's dad, have him say something about it being unwinnable. Daniel says that Amanda taught him everything including how to get revenge (hence the unwinnable trap). The big twist is that Daniel has Stockholm Syndrome and has been obsessed with taking down the person responsible for Amanda dying, which is Hoffman. Daniel says game over as the two blocks of ice swing down and crush Hoffman's head. Throughout the movie, show traps that have people being punished for abusing their children (ex. A woman has to break her feet and crawl out of a burning building to represent her not saving her child and making it crawl out of a house fire). This will give the hint that Daniel is the Jigsaw accomplice because he was a neglected child BUT it will keep the twist of him wanting to avenge Amanda a secret.

As a massive Saw fan I did love & enjoyed this Saw movie, I do agree that this doesn't feel like the original 7 movies and it doesn't really feel like it connects with the original 7, I really did love John & Amanda's relationship in this one I think it has a more deeper connection to their relationship, I really loved that this movie is really all about John Kramer that this is his movie, I didn't really mind the traps I thought they were not that bad, I wasn't really high on this one and maybe it will grow on me too, my Saw Ranking now is 1. Saw 2. Saw II 3. Saw III 4. Saw V 5. Jigsaw 6. Saw IV 7. Spiral: From The Book of Saw 8. Saw VI 9. Saw X 10. Saw 3D: The Final Chapter

I'm a big fan of the original franchise of 1-7. SAW each one the day they were released in theatres and bought the DVD for each the day they were released. I just can't get into these rebooted sequels, they just don't have that feel, at least for me, that the original 7 had. Maybe it's just a nostalgia thing for me, I don't know.

Haven't aeen it yet and appreciate that you're saying you loved the episodic nature of the series...but the best movie didn't have or need that....Saw (2004) the one thing i wanted going into Saw two was to find out more about jigsaw, and that movie is very good at building up the intrigue. Obviously then we are fed info in flashbacks and a little in saw three, but i never really liked having to wait two movies to find out what was in jill's box etc, it got very soap opera and contrived and suddenly john seemed to be able to predict everything like a supervillian. I am hoping saw x will show a more human side to john and background on his motives. He is a great conplex and contradictory villan as it is, but he needs and deserves a proper story of his own... like it was planned with the movie the collector originally being about him and jill.

The most disappointing thing for me, and probably something I should of just avoided entirely, was watching the THE TRAILER. They gave way too much information about the main plotline, about half of the movie is stuff we already knew coming into the theater. I really wish they spent less time explaining everything leading up to that point, and instead they could of focused more on at least TRYING to plug this movie in-between the first two movies as promised. To add to the disappointment, the glimmer of fan service was strictly done by phone calls and a cameo in the post credit scene🤣 Let's just hope this movie sells really well so they can give us a movie just for the fans! It's time!!!

It's in my top 3. I actually prefer it over 6. The gore was the most intense of the franchise and made me feel for John so much. I just wish they would go harder on John being a hypocrite. Edit: It's really interesting to hear someone say they loved how episodic the films became. I personally hated this, and I wish they gave at least 2 years between each to really flesh them out and not run off crazy with Hoffman. This isn't me having a bash - I genuinely enjoy hearing opposite opinions to mine.

Cool, not seen it yet, will be seeing it soon. As for the Norway-elective surgery element, one of the actresses (who plays Pederson) is actually Norwegian - therefore, its a stretch, but maybe the character is Norwegian, maybe she was part of the team in Norway from Saw 6 that was now working in Mexico. Maybe this is that team in fact, I dunno. A case could be made, possibly. The idea of another unconnected movie as far as the series goes...ok, I can see how that would be disappointing, but I feel like the main series ended when everyone died basically. The timing of it, between Saw and Saw 2...you would expect some sort of continuity I suppose, but also it sounds like a very different situation for Kramer himself, so its like he needed to take care of this outside of what he was trying to achieve in the films in the series that link to each other, so in a way it makes sense that its a self contained story. The logic is there, but it does require a certain amount of work to get to it in ways that you didn't have to do in Saw 1-7. You have to invent some stuff in your own head, which means that this film may have different implications depending on how the viewer sees it, and it would have to be written pretty Goddamn well for it to achieve what its going for if that is the intention. It sounds like its debateable whether the writing is that good here, but I will still give it a look. Cool review as always, guys. :o)

I personally thought it was dogsh*t, but mainly because I didn't buy into what the movie was trying to sell. The crux is the way the script attempts to humanize Jigsaw but falls flat on its face. Its aim to manipulate the emotions of the audience is laughable, especially since we are asked to be compassionate toward a serial killer who kidnaps some thieves and tortures them to death. The dilemma of the Jigsaw character and what he does to these scammers is completely disproportionate and therein lies the big flaw with the film. Any poor attempt at humanization, like Jigsaw saving a child toward the end of the film, does not absolve him from any of the events that came prior. Count me in as one of the few completely confused by the positive reviews for this film.

Some confusing lines. Shawnee’s fillers were distracting. Slower than the other movies but it has its place. On a side note when i was in residency on my oncology inpatient rotation I remember 2 patients who had terminal cancer, being admitted very very ill from the spread of their cancers. Im a fan , watched every sequel and spin offs. This was probably the lowest (excluding jigsaw and spiral) of the rankings. It felt long halfway through. The twists where not clever and it felt safe to me. The traps were awful imo, remove this and weigh this. The eyeball suction was was funny as hell. Dont get me started on how they implemented their first Radiation trap . How did the biggest culprit of this movie get the least gruesome and hard trap compared to the rest? Felt like a fanboy made this and the story felt boring for an arc of Jigsaw. The ending scene was soo not needed for his character or Amanda's , felt so tacky. Too many convenient plot holes and felt like a movie for Saw beginner's. Saw X and Jigsaw movies should have their names switched . This should have been called Jigsaw

The gritty Aesthetic is gone the lingering dread is no longer there and the traps was lame the twists at the end very predictable. As a hardcore fan of the franchise continuity is completely lost here when you said that i was like yes my thoughts exactly. At this point just hand the franchise back to darren lynn yes spiral was mediocre but at least he know's what made the saw movies great in the first place and yes this works as a spinoff not a sequel.

I think Jigsaw has a better twist than this one but too many plot holes. The post credit was nice but I wish it wasn’t in the trailer. Now this might be considered a SPOILER to some so stop reading this if you haven’t seen the movie. Something the doctor said to Kramer sounded to me like a continuity error but maybe Im wrong and misunderstood her.
