We have quaking aspen or popple, that stuff seems to move all over the place as it dries I’ve got flat sawn boards that made themselves into dough bowls. 😂 The other poplar we have is big tooth which saws fuzzy but it is much more stable and makes a nice board. I was told that old wooden logging beds were made of big tooth because it’s light and strong and the wood doesn’t want to slide off it. I’m up in central Maine.

You mentioned how it saws fuzzy. Because it fuzzes instead of splintering, it is traditionally used as bench tops in saunas. You don’t want splinters in your naked backside.

Aspen has the same hardness as white pine, it takes nails very well, and it is very stable in conditions of changing temperature and humidity, so it is good for construction. Have you considered making 2x4s out of Aspen?

I've always wondered why you only use the taper on 1 side of a log and then say "what you gain on 1 side you lose on the other". Is there some reason that you don't taper the opposite face and then have your tapered waste cuts come out of the center core of the tree. From my thinking the highest grade lumber comes from the outside of the tree at least on hardwoods.
@markgalicic7788 Жыл бұрын
it's a 50-50 gain to center the heartwood just common sense .

You call it Aspen! Is it the same as a Poplar?
@CarrotCaptain Жыл бұрын
You might have heard it called popple.
@firecaptaintom Жыл бұрын
@@CarrotCaptain Aspen is often called "popple" in the lake states. It's different than poplar.
@CarrotCaptain Жыл бұрын
@@firecaptaintom It is not different than poplar. Quaking Aspen is part of the poplar family. The wood sold as poplar in the big stores is usually tulip poplar, which is not actually poplar. It's part of the lily family. Popple is the common name used in Wisconsin.
@firecaptaintom Жыл бұрын
@CarrotCaptain My point was that the "poplar" being cut in Pennsylvania by Nuts319 is not the same as the "popple" being cut here in Wisconsin, where I'm from. Just like the whitetail deer I hunt here is not the same as a mule deer in Wyoming. Same family, different critter. Good info regarding the store wood btw.
