I noticed you didn't seem concerned about the contaminated water from the stream rolling down the bag, over the exit tube of the filter, down the side of the plastic tubing extension and into your clean water vessel. Seems to me that would be a real possibility of contamination. Shouldn't you wipe off all the "dirty water" from the exterior of everything?

Yes, he should have. Not being careful of the contaminated water dripping down the outside of the CNOC bag is an easy way to get sick. I use an adapter and screw my clean bottle onto the bottom of the Sawyer to create a closed system. Pays to be extra safe out in the backcountry.

About how long does it take to filter a liter or gallon?

I honestly have never timed it, because I set mine up and then walk away from it and work on other stuff at my campsite. But if I had to guess at it, I would say about 30-45 minutes for a liter. But that is only a guess.
