My theory is Kaido was literally born a dragon that ate a different fruit. I say this because of his horns. Look at momonosuke's horns and shenron's horns. They only have the two that stick straight up. So, how did Kaido get the second pair of curvy horns? Maybe he ate something like an Oni-Oni fruit to give him even more power and a humanoid form. That's why people call him a "thing" bc he's not human in a sense.

Jason Green better yet, since people (like myself) wanted kaido to have an oni devil fruit, what if he ate the human human fruit model oni. So dragon would be his normal state like you said, hybrid would be what we usually see him as, and then full oni. That way both groups of fans get to be happy as well as really highlighting just how much of a “beast” kaido is, he wouldn’t be just one mythical creature, but two!

The "only 5 devil fruits that grant flying" thing can also be interpreted the other way: Bird fruits count as one type, insect fruits as another, Shiki's fruit is a third, Kaido's dragon is a fourth. A fifth kind could be Buffalo's spinning fruit, but note that Pell mentioned it was only 5 *known* types. Something like Buffalo's fruit might not have even been counted for that, as it doesn't inherently grant flying, it just works like that for him because of his weirdo hairstyle. Similarly, I wouldn't count Fujitora or Mont-d'Or, as they can only make stuff float and stand on top of it, not actually fly themselves. So we might still even have a fifth slot open.
