Hey Brock.. good video except you forgot the whole reason for that specific type of tank… you never connected the grounding wire to a bare metal surface of the mower when you filled. The ground wire is to prevent accidental spark which could start a fire. Much like touching the metal on your car before touching the fuel nozzle when at the gas station, especially in the winter when static electricity is more prevelant.
@williamgaines9784
@williamgaines9784 Жыл бұрын
Same for when filling it up at the station...since the truck bed has a liner, static could build in the tank and a spark could occur at the nozzle from the pump, which would be VERY bad. That ground wire should be attached to ground when filling or emptying that cannister.

I’m not sure I got the same exact name brand, but, I bought one identical to that one off of Amazon a couple of years ago. I put it together, put gas in it, went to crank the handle to fill up my side by side, and it was stuck… locked up. I contacted the company through Amazon to get a replacement pump and they informed me to return the whole thing, that’s all they could do. This was after I just filled it up with 30 gallons of gas mind you. I syphoned all I could out of the tank into my vehicles, cleaned the gas out as best I could and shipped it back. It was a total mess. They did refund my money, so at least I got that. I hope you have better luck.

I bought a similar Roughneck transfer tank from Northern tool about 12 years ago. It has worked fantastic. I fill it using 5-gallon containers since I have no way to legally haul it. The construction is quite a bit better than the Vevor unit but then again it cost twice as much.

Just curious why you say you have no legal way to carry it? How big a tank do you have? You don't need any type of hazmat endorsements or markings as long as it's less that 119 gallons.

@@thebaldeagle655 I have a similar transport container as the one in this video. I don't have a truck. I have a SUV and a landscape trailer. It is illegal in PA to haul this container on a trailer. When hauling gasoline in a vehicle the containers are limited to 5-gallon cans and there is a maximum of 4 cans. I may have my numbers wrong but there is a limit on the number of small containers within a vehicle. The rules are a bit different if you have a container bolted into the bed of a pickup truck. And of course the transportation rules are completely different and less restrictive for transporting diesel fuel.

That looks handy. We run two mowers, each holds a little more than 5 gallons, plus a few various machines (pressure washer, push mower, etc). I get tired of hauling 5 gallon cans. I may have to consider one of these. It would greatly reduce the number of trips I make to get equipment fuel. If only the cost of 100% gas would go down!

Howdy Brock! Yeah, people don't appreciate how important it is to ground gasoline transfer tanks like that. The flashpoint of gasoline is right around -50 degrees F, while diesel is closer to 130 degrees F. One of the few things I remember from my days as a career firefighter lol. The chances of a spark igniting gasoline vapor at room temperature are there (you still have to have the right mixture of fuel and oxygen), the chances of a static charge igniting diesel vapor at room temperature are slim to none - mainly because diesel vapor doesn't naturally occur at room temps. And before the keyboard commandos jump in... YES it is possible, just not probable. It is possible to get struck by lightning twice in the same day... but it isn't probable lol. We never shut down the firetrucks or ambulances when we fueled them, and if you go to any truck stop many drivers do not shut down while fueling. Interesting to see how your tank holds up for you. Thanks for sharing 🤠 EDIT: After reading some of the comments on here, wanted to add the following... using a larger tank designed for diesel to store gasoline can be dangerous. A couple of gallons of fuel in a 5 gallon plastic container easily demonstrates how different the flashpoints are. A 15 degree increase in temperature and the gasoline container starts to bulge from the interior pressure. You can have an 80 degree increase in temperature and as long as the ambient temp isn't exceeding that 130 degrees, the same amount of diesel won't affect the same plastic container at all. I went out to my shop this spring to top off my gas and diesel 5 gallon cans and the gas one dang near looked like a basketball lol.

I also recommend putting the container in a front corner of the truck bed. Reason is, you always have control of how you accelerate BUT you can't control the stop sometimes. Not a good result if that tank breaks loose and shifting forwards.

My complaint about hand cranked fuel pumps is you have to be close to what you're filling to see if you're going to overflow it or not. My Kubota L4701 has the fuel filler cap on the top of the hood, one of the few things I dislike about that tractor. Unless I want to know it's full by watching it overflow, there's just no way to monitor it while cranking the pump from the ground. That's one of the advantages of the electric units is that you've got the valve (dispenser handle) right where you're putting the fuel in.

My wife does the lawn mowing and can not handle 5gallon cans. This unit is great, as I no longer need to fill her mower every 2-3 hours. We have 10 acres of lawn. Takes about 10 hours per week. I used wd40 on it to make it easier to turn and this caused it to leak at the pump handle. I pulled it apart and redid the seals and all is good!

That sounds like you're cutting an acre an hour. Are you using a pushroller or something similar? The front wheels are too small. They screw into small spot welded nuts . Mine bent & the weld broke. The gas gauge never worked. As you can see the pump is hard to crank., (Notice the crank position change). The rear wheels on mine would not turn freely when the axle nut was tight. . I tossed the pump and gauge, Replaced the front wheels with 3" casters. ( Metric size 10 shank ) Big washers and double nuts. Rounded the shoulder on the axles so they'd not contact the hub and got a battery powered pump with custom extension and check valve. It now rolls good & the DC Volt transfer pump is SOOooooo much better.

Running gas in a diesel-only rated tank is foolish. First, you're assuming the materials in the tank, pump, hose, and dispenser handle are ethanol compatible, and as ANYONE who has owned a gas powered piece of equipment knows, ethanol will eat anything rubber. Second, diesel vapor is far less flammable than gas vapor. Unless there's a proper ground between the tank and the dispenser handle, there is the potential for static charge build up, which is a fire hazard. The pump motor must be ignition proof, either in a rated housing or using a brushless motor, otherwise, just like the sparking you see on an electric drill, it's an ignition source. Lastly, tank venting is different between diesel and gasoline. Brock's tank is outdoors so it's not much of an issue, but in an enclosed area, an improperly vented tank can lead to gasoline fumes, which can be ignited by a flipping a light switch if the air/fuel mixture is correct. But if it's worked for you keep doing it. If it doesn't, I'm sure we'll read about you in the obit section.

@@JCWren ok safety Sally you mean I shouldn't pump my fuel through a garden hose? lol yea all his stuff and my stuff is rated to pump gasoline the only thing that techincally isn't is the tank itself cause the govt doesn't like you hauling gasoline down the road in those tanks so how is the cheap amazon tank different than one you'd by from the farm store thats "diesel only"

Over priced and doesn't solve any problems. You put gas in 2 self propelled pieces of equipment that could have been easily driven to you stationary dispenser. It has to be completely empty to get it in the back of a truck. Its 50 pounds empty. At 260 pounds full, most people don't have a way to get it out of the truck. Ramps? Yeah, I'd watch that show. You'd still have to use equipment to put in your truck to get it to the sawmill and again to take it out. I got 55 gallon fuel barrels for free and I already had a hand truck to move them if necessary and I fill and empty the transfer barrel the same day and easily get it out of the truck by hand.
