In no way am I a China supporter but I don't think that this is the precedent that we should set. If China has control over the flow of information on tiktok you would never hear about the tiananmen square on there you would never hear about the uyghurs that are in camps but I have. The largest concern that I have seen for it being a company based in China is that the Chinese government can at any point request their data and take the data of all of the United States users. Our issue is not with tiktok specifically it is with the policies in China and that is why it is worded as a foreign adversary owned social media ban. I guess that my main issue with this right now is that it feels like either the beginning or middle of a cold war. to my knowledge there has been no communication between us and China throughout all of this even though our issue is directly with what we think China will do not with what we think tiktok will do. It just feels like an escalation of tension that nobody is allowed to acknowledge on a world stage or else everything would collapse.

A funny solution might be to open the frontend (app/website) to be operated by 3rd parties, while giving them access to the backend APIs (algorithm, feed, videos etc.). If they go and do a good open source frontend, they'd even get some good publicity from these communities for that and basically still control the app that they can keep up quality... as long the entity releasing it to the app stores keeps stuff updated. Though no clue how difficult it would be for them to set that up, just think it would be a funny potential workaround.

I'm conflicted. I consider myself partially libertarian so I think that private websites should be able to dictate their own ToS (within the bounds of legality), HOWEVER, Tiktok is also a consumer privacy nightmare as well as an unbelievably powerful tool that can sway elections, abiding only by foreign interests. For example threats, doxing, etc are speech that in theory are in range of free speech but in practice works against it. These things are often regulated in working democracies. The regulations are made by laws which are made by the presentatives that are chosen by public democratic elections in most republics. Secrecy of coding, user data harvesting (and ability to refuse from it), monopoly status, etc could be regulated tighter or looser without erasing the app from existence nor damaging freedom of speech. These apps are also used for information warfare operations by hostile nations. Dysfunctional governance in USA is result of that and Russia does 80% of harmful infomation influencing against West today (New hotspots of this influencing are Africa and South America). Influencing operations can take years or decades and consist numerous attacks and main target is to sow discord, divided nation is much weaker than united. Russia been doing this non-stop for 100 years now, cold war never ended for them. China is now chinming in too. These apps can't really fight against it on their own but need help from nations resources, and that's where regulations kick in again.
