I believe in positivity and don't usually comment, but I also believe in trying to be fair and objective when it comes to companies selling us stuff. After watching the review of the new OM-5 on DPReview here it goes..... I currently use the new OM-1. I switched over from the EM1-III mainly for the AF and subject detection upgrades, which I feel are significant and a joy to use. I also prefer the new menu structure and definitely like the added processing speed which if you've used the high res mode for example on earlier models, you'l note it is notably slower than the new camera. All that said, I didn't feel the OM-1 as a whole was a "Wow" type of upgrade, but at least it has been worth it for me. I was looking forward to the OM-5 - hoping for something special and different - an everyday carry that is stills-oriented as well as something that was complimentary to the OM-1 and an evolution of the line as a whole. I remember when the original EM-5 came out. What a great camera for the time. But now, 10+ years later it seems that what OM System delivered as the OM-5 was a re-purposed EM-5 III body and minimal improvements. Nothing Wow or noteworthy about it. Although I can understand that the form factor and feature set may make this a great choice for some. While I do appreciate the form factor the OM-5 comes off like a way to use "spare parts" and mostly an economic decision rather than a customer-driven update. I feel it was a missed opportunity for OM System to make an offering that was more compelling and competitive in today's marketplace. Keeping the same sensor as EM-5iii is dated. Why not boost the resolution of the OM-5 and make it the distinguishing feature of the line - something in the 25-30MP range? Keeping the menu structure the same (especially when you have an updated menu system) is dated and kind of a baffling decision - There's no crossover benefit (continuity), for a person using the OM-1who wants an OM-5 as a companion body. No USB-C? Again a dated omission. No joystick? A dated omission. Why not take same approach as other companies and carry-over AF features to lower price-point models? A dated decision. No updated EVF, a dated decision. Seeing offerings and updates from other companies, this feels like a let down. No evolution from what I can see. If you own an EM-5 III, are there enough changes to upgrade? If you were new to the system compared to the competition, would this be your camera? For a little more money and something only slightly larger (and smaller than the OM-1), there is the Fuji XT-5 as an example. I really hope that OM-System has something "Wow" in store for us in the near future.....

@@TITAOSTEIN You may be right there. With these features (but not IP53 weather sealed) and at an EM10 type price or close. And for the OM5 to have been a smaller but slightly cut down spec OM1. I just got an EM5 Mkiii to add to my EM10 Mark ii that has served me very well. Honestly the EM10ii with the metal buuld fells higher quality, despite being one of the entry level or more or less entry level range. However, I am liking the feel of the EM5iii and its extra functionality which is a big step up from the EM10 ii - but these improvements are trickling down slowly. With more features, the EM10 Mkii body would be an amazing camera. When I got my hands on the EM10ii I finally thought I have a real Olympus camera to go against the old OM1, OM2 or OM4Ti - and that great little camera passed under my radar for quite a while due to lack of forceful general marketing. It's like this whole range is currently marketed at rich upper middle class kids and not at ordinary people who save up money to pursue their hobbies. This is true for some other products too, especially in the musical instrument sphere.

As Fulltime landscape photographer I love to work with my OIympus gear. The gear shows its versatility and ruggedness, which I believe is so important when you are out in the field and hiking a lot to capture stunning images. It seems however that a lot of the EM1 Mark III has gone into the new OM-5. I understand the reasoning behind this, but I sincere hope that we are getting some new groundbreaking features in the next series of the OM cameras as the competition does not stop! I am shooting the Northern Lights and Astro with my Olympus gear for many years now and hope that OM System will implement the Star Tracer feature. This would be killer feature to have as you do not need a star tracker anymore when hiking up the mountain to photograph the night sky.....it saves so much weight! Break-Free! OM System gooooo!

One computational feature I would love to see in camera is stitching, not just for wide panos but for verticals and with a variety of aspects. Would be great for astro-landscape photography and potentially for shooting wide views of architectural interiors without wide angle distortion.

Yes I don't really understand why a panorama feature is standard by now on all of these cameras. Other image atitching would also be great, in or out of camera but in camera gives more immediacy.

I'm hoping for the suucess of OM System cameras because I've been a liker of Olympus gear since 1981 when I was after an OM2N but bought an OM10 so I could also afford a zoom lens. On the launch day of the OM5, I took deluvery of an EM5 Mark iii which suits my budget at the moment as a functional upgrade to the marvellous little EM10 Mark ii that I bought a few years ago.

Why or why does the EM5 mk3 need to be replaced so soon? What we need is a pure street camera and I have been patiently waiting for the Pen F replacement. Sadly that is not to be, so I shall be switching to Fuji soon to replace my aging Pen F and other Olympus gear. So sad as I have been using Olympus gear for nearly 40 years continuously.

I am coming from Fuji to OM 5 , selling my whole Pro 2 and XT 20 along with 4 Fuji lenses. You will enjoy the jpegs but best to use Capture One to process your images. And prepare to get large files to store. I have over 3 tb of images, the cameras I used do not have stablelisation. Don’t short change the 27mm f/2.8 lens as it is razor sharp but makes noise when it focus.

@@edwardpike1 Actually I ended up keeping my much beloved E-M5ii. I simply cannot part with this beauty, together with the 60mm macro, 12-40/2.8 Pro and a 14mm Pana pancake lens! Sold all others to buy the X-Pro 3 for street photography, because I wanted a camera with a EVF on the top left of the camera. The IBIS is something I missed so much. The 12-14 Pro IQ beats the Fuji equivalent too.

OM SYSTEM can come to Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 There are tons of beautiful landscapes and wildlife to photograph. Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 can be a fast pace challenge for this new camera as well. All the colors and action are always so exhilarating. Why not look into it?

I have been a Sony user for year, I recently bought a OM-5, I have being trying to find a video to walk me through all the menu settings including video settings and it is so hard to find a video for that. Any suggestions? Thanks

There was at least one MINIMUM update I was looking for: in camera software, menu system in the camera...but it has not changed. Will have wait then till OM Systems offers a real software upgrade in terms of USABILITY. Hello OM hope you are listening

Great video guys although I’m a little bit disappointed with the new OM-5. I was hoping to see the same sensor as the OM-1, USB-C (micro usb!!??), the same menu present on the OM-1, better EVF… I think that OM lost a very good opportunity to bring something amazing and new!

Hi My experience here is that someone actually answers. Thanks for that! To my question: The original cable for USB-C is recommended for tethering. It is understandable that this actually works. Unlike many other USB-C cables. On one side of the cable is a USB-A connector. However, many computers only have USB-B connections. Can you recommend a cable that only has USB-C connectors and works with the Olympus/OM system camera? Could you possibly include one in the shop? Kind regards, Benedikt Meier

How could anyone seriously recommend buying this camera when the previous version is available at half the price? Then there's the lack of USB-C and the cheap plastic body which would be difficult to justify on anything half the price let alone at what the OM5 is retailing for.

I’ve had a ‘cheap plastic’ em5iii for 2 years. It’s been to the Arctic, up mountains, on boats. The em5iii body is polycarbonate, weather sealed and pretty tough. Certainly not cheap plastic. I don’t disagree that the OM5 is not the WOW camera many expected or wanted and there some silly things like the micro USB, old menus etc. but to say it’s cheap plastic is nonsense

I really hoped that OM system would stop making the stupid mistakes Olympus made for so many years. What a failed opportunity to really make a splash in the camera market. An updated weather sealed PRO PEN F would have been huge. Instead they make minor changes and jack up the price. After 15 + years of shooting with Olympus, I am going to start the transition into another system. How disappointing.

Hello! I just bought an OM System 5 and I run into a serious problem. I live in Argentina and apparently, it is a country "not suitable" to use the wifi and bluetooth of the camera, so apart from the obvious, I can not use the OI Share app, nor the cell phone as a remote control and screen. I was looking for solutions (including OM System technical support) and I can't find a way out. OM System replies: "The company needs to get Wi-Fi certification with the country to sell the product with Wi-Fi function. However, we did not get Wi-Fi certification there because our official distributor is not located and no official product sale system in Argentine. We are very sorry but we are unable to be of any assistance with this matter" In short: "I sell you the camera, I don't warn you of the restrictions and fix yourself as you can." Was anyone able to fix this issue? I was told that with a "tunneling" I could solve it, but I have no idea what that is! From now I would appreciate any contribution, thank you very much Gabriel

I really don’t understand why everyone is bashing on this camera. While marginal, improvements are evident. Furthermore, it makes complete sense on what they’re doing; giving people a camera that is close to the OM1 but people expecting an OM5 with a stacked sensor, upgraded EVF and many other features all around for $1500….it’s just absurdity. Furthermore, many other camera companies do the same thing; put out a new camera with marginal improvements. To me, I think they’re going to make this the new entry level camera, keep marketing the OM1 as it is selling very well and at some point when they come out with a new flagship camera, they will drop the price of the OM1 so people can have access to that. I just find it funny when people say “these cameras are too much”…like have people browsed NIkon, Sony and other brands. The cameras are much more expensive. For example I came from owning a Sony a7riv $3300 and Sony a1 $6500….but people want to complain about a OM5 costing $1099….I don’t think OM System is going anywhere and they have a bright future. The only thing that would kill OM System is it’s current users because they don’t use logic to understand the camera market; every other brand continues to increase prices of their cameras while OM system does a fantastic job at keeping prices of their cameras relatively low/affordable. People complain about the OM1 being pricy but it’s autofocus capabilities are on par with the a1 and we’re talking $4000 difference in price. If people really want a flagship camera, they need to stop complaining and save, that’s exactly what I’ did and what ALL people do.

The OM-1 was announced as a Wow camera. Very good camera, but far from Wow! Now the OM-5 comes with the E-M1 mk3 processor, but with a sensor that was already outdated when the E-M1 mk3 came out. The same sensor is in the EM-1 mk2. (September 2016) I'm not sure, but I think it's the sensor from the PEN-F (January 2016). Let's be realistic, OM-5 brought absolutely nothing new. All the features are old and crippled. I am disappointed I cannot express how disappointed I am!

If the OM-1 was WOW. Then the OM-5 should be named the "Meh"-camera. Meh as in the verbal equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders. The use of the term "meh" shows that the speaker is apathetic, uninterested, or indifferent to the question or subject at hand. It is occasionally used as an adjective, meaning something is mediocre or unremarkable.

You should have spent 6-12 months designing this camera and made a substantial update to the E-M5 lineup. This is just too much recycled old goods. Actually it seems just to be a firmware update to the E-M5 MkIII with a new logo. As a long time Olympus photographer this is a huge letdown in terms of company direction and product portfolio management. It is a shame really as you showed a lot of promise with the OM-1, but now you're just remarketing 3-5 year old technology. So how long are we supposed to wait for something substantial to happen in this lineup? Another 3-4 years? Your thinking as a company is really challenging the perception of your potential customer base. You just seem completely disconnected from our expectations.

extremely disappointing. this is basically an EM5iii with an OM SYSTEM badge on it. checkout the chris nicholls' review over on dpreview. the EM5iii was already dated when it came out, and now with the current rebadge it's a dinosaur. and at a price tag that's unjustifiable from any perspective. you can get more photos and videos in the G9 for less than half the price.
