It definitely depends on the area of the world you live in, but in most western countries it's actually quite rare to be trilingual. However, here in Europe most people will speak 2-3 at an intermediate or so level (from my experiences at least). I've personally always wished I was able to speak a lot of languages fluently/natively like some people. But I've worked hard and since a couple of months I can officially say I'm fluent in English :) (I got C2 on my CAE test so I'm pretty sure that counts). In case you're curious I've been tought 2 more languages in school that are both at about A2-B1 level: French and German.

If you’re from North Africa, you’ll probably already know three languages which are Arabic (mother tongue), French (since most of the North African countries were French colonies before, French now makes a huge part of most of these countries’ school programs / education). And then you have English, which is also taught at schools since it’s the “world language” that everyone should know how to speak in the present day. Beside all those, most people may decide to learn another language, by liking or preferences, or because of certain circumstances. For example, I’m a big fan of Japanese anime and manga, that’s why I’ve been learning Japanese. Whilst my sister likes Turkish romance series, therefore, she’s learning Turkish. My uncle pursued his education in Germany, that’s why he speaks German, while a friend of dad is married to a Norwegian woman, and they’re both living in Norway; that’s why he speaks Norwegian.

Not all of Latin America is Mexico, there are many other countries and that you say that really is annoying, and it only shows how pedantic you are. I hope I am not speaking for everyone. Is it normal that being a native Spanish speaker, "te quiero" sounds more natural to me than "te amo"? Te amo sounds either textbookish or directly taken from a telenovela to me haha. I am from Spain, maybe that has something to do. Of course "te amo" and "te quiero" are both OK but te amo feels a little awkward to me. The degree of intensity some of you talk about, I really haven't experienced it in daily life with others, not even in a relationship. Te amo just sounds over the top. Maybe we never loved enough each other lol

Totally. It feels like "te amo" is a set phrase non-native speakers learn at some point. Like for example take a singer: they would turn to the crowd and go "Te amo" in stead of "Los amo/los quiero".

I think part of it is that te quiero kind of carries less weight. Te Amo has a lot of intensity behind (I've never said te amo to anyone, I'm saving that for getting engaged someday) The reason it sounds more "textbook" would probably be because foreigners don't understand the intensity of the words and therefore, they are much more likely to use them at an inappropriate time or with the wrong person.

In my humble opinion, it's become a frequent way of expressing affection these days. It doesn't feel "textbookish" anymore. In fact, teens usually use "te amo" to tell how much they care about each other -sometimes in a pretty lighthearted way as well. (I am from Latin America)

It depends a lot of each one snd the environment where it was raised. I tell my wife "te amo" all the time, and its natural to me. Also, I never would tell a friend "te amo" because there is a lot of passion in that word, or even "te quiero" cause it is kind of cheesy, but it is easy to say "los quiero a todos". But, thats only me.
