Reading "United States of America" Transliterated into Cyrillic was a really bizarre, even through you are right, it's a similar principle. To be fair, the "United States of America" is like the proper name. Imagine if we had to call it "Rossiyskaya Federatsiya" instead of Russia, that would be weird. But Eswatini? Eh, that's easy enough to pronounce. Also In German it is "Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika" , but we say "US" not "VS", even thought it would be "VS" when translated.
