@TomRolfson
@TomRolfson 3 ай бұрын
@@sheilagilleland4312 Please, don't say you're going to die when your babies go. Garret knows me... my love of German Shepherds. I've been "addicted" to them for 30 years. My first one lived to just short of 15, in her entire life she traveled the country with me staying in some 4 and 5 star hotels, I believe we spent less than 3 weeks worth of nights apart in that 15yrs (she was with me through everything). As I don't have any children, she was or was at that time (I had to put her down in my late 40s) she was as near as I'll ever know to having a child. I worked with many other dogs, fostered dogs but knew I wasn't ready for a "keeper" for at least 2-3yrs after her. I have since had and lost other German Shepherds, I have two now... 1 and 2yrs old. (Side note: Garret's guidance helped me avoid littermate syndrome even though they're a year apart, they share the same father.) My point... remain positive that you can help other dogs, that "your babies" would want you to continue caring for others. In the end, we know they will not live as long as us... it's the toughest part of owning/partnering/adopting a dog... but just as Garret says, we celebrate their lives. I'm now 62... these will be the last two "puppies" I raise. But being active in a German Shepherd Club, I expect I will still adopt or foster dogs until I physically can't handle them any longer.

My 15 year old pitador, PoPo, passed in his sleep. It was a surprise bc he didn't show any health problems. I remember that night though he ate 2 servings of food, he was extra hungry. I guess he knew he was going on a trip, but didn't tell me. I always dreaded the thought of getting him put down, so I consider it a blessing he went in his sleep. He laid down on his pillow and just fell asleep. I believe God sends us these fur babies into our life, as a guardian angel of some sorts.

@@bradleysmith9431 Darn you people, trying to make me cry. When did you say goodbye to PoPo? We had to say goodbye to Shasta, our GSD mix not quite 2 years ago. That dog literally saved my wife and daughter's lives during pregnancy. My wife had a condition that's not hereditary, and there are no markers to watch for. It just happens pretty randomly, even with the most healthy of pregnancies. It does damage to multiple organs, makes your Platelets level bottom out which makes clotting harder, and your enzymes skyrocket which is just an all around really bad thing. My mom was a labor & delivery nurse for most of her 42 year nursing career, and usually by the time the mother feels bad enough to get checked out, it's at a point the mother, child, or both do not survive the pregnancy. If not for Shasta and her severe anxiety that morning, we never would have gone to the hospital when we did, and the damage was already starting. The doctor came in and did bloodwork, and had us in an OR doing an emergency C-section 30 minutes later. He told us after that if we had not come in until the following day, he's pretty sure one or both would not have survived. Shasta always came in and slept in her crate near me, but from the day we brought our baby home, Shasta NEVER came to bed without first walking through our child's room and checking in on her first, every day for 12 years. About 2 weeks before she left, Shasta come upstairs and didn't go into our daughter's room before coming to bed, and I just lost it because I knew that was a marker that the time was getting really close. Even though she wasn't feeling well and was starting to shift to try and get comfortable, she was still always sweet and loving and happy, even in the vet's office when we were all crying, and she was trying to cheer us up. Vets are some people I really pity when it's time to say goodbye. Some are able to more or less emotionally detach. Our vet doesn't have that ability. When she came in to tell us Shasta had maybe 2 months to live tops, she could not stop crying. She cried every bit as much as we did when that day came. I don't know when PoPo passed, but if you're looking for another dog now or in the future, check out the Puppy/crate training course at DIYK9.com. It includes a lot of info on helping pick a good dog from a litter, which dogs will be what you're looking for, and which you want to avoid. There are several ways to do this correctly. I wish I'd known this before we got our older dog almost 6 years ago. We love Snowbell and she's as sweet and loving as can be, but she's fearful which comes across as aggressive to people that don't know much about dogs, and she has retinal atrophy which means her eyes are getting worse and worse, and eventually she'll be blind. She's getting close. When it's darker in a room, she'll go up to the ottoman or couch get sit with us and she'll paw at the couch or ottoman to make sure where she is before jumping up. If I'd known what Garret has in these courses then, I would have been able to get a more confident dog with better genetics.

Impossible decision and every situation is unique. Had to put my 12-year-old labrador to sleep after her battle with aggressive mammary cancer. She never complained once until her very last day. When I discovered she had cancer I promised myself that she would go out on top, or as close to it as I could manage. My vet was great and reinforced that the dog doesn't worry about how long they have left. Just take each day as it comes. You know your dog better than anyone.

Had to put my cat Granny Suzie to sleep a couple of days ago at the age of 18, her heart was giving up and despite being hospitalised and put on medication to see if she could make it a little longer, nothing was working and I could see it was time to let her go with dignity before she really starts to suffer. I can say from experience that having the euthanasia done at home is really the way to go. Our beloved pet can then say goodbye in a familiar and safe environment, and it's easier on us "parents" as well to say goodbye at home. RIP, Xiphos. 🐕

He had arthritis and degenerative myelopathy. The doctor gave him 6 months to a year after diagnosis but he pulled through for 1 and a half years. He had similar symptoms to your dog. There comes a time when its time to let your best friend go. I had a vet that does in home euthanasia come to my house. My lab was a fantastic dog. she deserved not to be in pain that i couldn't control for her. Ann even helped me carry her to Aiden's resting place. Crying writing this.😢 I know the love you feel for your family dog.

My Husky is somewhere between 11-13 years (rescued). I'm so grateful that she's in such good shape for an old dog, but I fear the inevitable day where her health will take a down turn.

I just came across your video. First of all Thank you for the courage and kindness to make this video. I can’t tell you how comforting it is. We recently went through this with our sweet Willie Boy, he too was 13 yoa. There isn’t a day that doesn’t go by that I don’t think about him, my husband and I miss him dearly and still long for his presence. My husband fought the inevitable for so long right down to Willie taking his last breath. I laid beside Willie whispering in his ear all the wonderful memories we’d had together, telling him how much he was loved. The most beautiful thing about his passing was he looked 6 years younger, all of the arthritis and other health issues had subsided, his body was finally at rest. I could see he was finally at peace, no more pain. This is part of life sucks! Thank you again for sharing and helping me as we face this journey again with Willie’s companion who just turned 11. God bless you, may your memories always comfort you💜

I feel for you. I had to put my mastiff mix to sleep on 7/24. He was 14 and has been with me since 10 months old. He was still healthy, losing eye site some do to cataracts. He fell off the bed and paralyzed his hind quarters. After three days the decision was made to put him down. I am 66 and the magic relationship we had took yrs to develop and there will be time in my life to repeat that, but I am helping at a mastiff rescue and there is a 1.5 yr old cane corso that I have been working with that I am going to adopt. The relationship may not be the same, but adopting him will heal two broken hearts. I encourage other people who have lost their best friend to do the same, even if just going to a shelter and petting dogs. Celebrate what you baby meant to you. Don't smother that love in grief, give it away in some form 😊

I really felt this, my dog is getting old now he's pushing roughly 11 and I think he's got a bit more time but I've also seen him struggle at times. I realized when he would get wet he would try to shake but it would cause him pain in his joints. Luckily he was able to push through a lot of it and get better but it's still a clear, slow decline. Watching this really helped me process a little bit mentally what I'm going to be going through as it's my first dog. I'm optimistic and hoping I have at least a few more years of love to give and get from him, thank you for putting out there hardship you went through and sharing some of the important things for the rest of us to consider with our pets when the day inevitably comes. Wishing you the best!
