Possibility: Imagine it's the last turn, you have 30 coins, 2 stars, and are in second place. First place has 3 stars and 11 coins. You get a roll that takes you first through a star space, then through a space where you can steal a star. If you accept the star you end up in second and lose the game, but if you deny the star and instead spend your coins to steal from first place, you end up winning. Super situational and exceptionally rare, but without the option to say no this would be a pretty lame forced loss.

But stealing only costs 30 coins in SMP, and 50 or higher in every other game. If it's not SMP, it's a loss no matter what. But the coins don't really matter, the original comments' intent is that first place would have more coins than you if you bought the star, but less stars if you stole it.
@Hawlo6 жыл бұрын
I've been replaying MP1 with COMs on Hard and I found a good reason to say no, though it'd only work against COMs, not actual players. It's to keep the spotlight off yourself when another com is about to reach Boo. If buying the star would put you in first place, you'd lose your star to the Boo, but if you don't buy it then whoever is in first place will lose theirs. That way you get to keep your coins and someone else loses a star. There're probably tons of other specific scenarios like this, but again, only against COMs.

In Mario party ds, I always say no to the star on DK's board. On his board you can get all the stars you want as long as you have enough coins so I collect a bunch of coins and then get all the stars I can on the final turn. It's even better if during the last 5 turns all the stars cost 5 coins. Some games I'd have 50 stars at the end.

I once won a Mario Party because I DIDN'T buy the star. It was the very last turn so there was no chance of my opponent buying it. I kept track, and I was 10 coins away from taking the most coins at one time star. I was fairly certain I was going to win the minigame star (I was right). And, I knew that the happening star would be given to someone irrelevant. The person who currently had the most coins star currently had that most amount and was also leading in stars. If I had bought the star, I would have tied him in stars. But, he would have had more coins than me. We both would have gotten a bonus star each, and he would have won because he'd have more coins. Instead, I passed on buying the star and won the next minigame. I was one star down, but I got two bonus stars at the end and won because of it.

How about this scenario: It's the last 3 turns and you are ahead in coins but tied in stars. (Let's say you Waluigi have 3 stars 86 coins compared to Mario with 3 stars 40 coins, Luigi with 2 stars 60 coins, and Daisy with 2 stars 35 coins.) there's a star that you get to that's way far away from all the opponents who were trying to get where the star just was that Luigi got. If you calculate that all the opponents are more than 30 spaces away (or more with perfect rolls for items) then it might technically be strategic to say no since they wouldn't have a chance to get the star but once the star moved they might have the chance to get it. There have been times I've played where right after I buy a star the next one ends up being either 1 space behind, on the same space, or 1 space in front of (worst scenario) another opponent. Of course that's not factoring in bonus stars and chance spaces but still it might actually win you the game depending on you not buying it if the luck involved would've thrown a star in front of Mario then a Bowser revolution or battle mini game that was completely luck based and you ended up losing, Mario won it bringing him up to 105 coins or something. It would be extremely unlucky for that to happen but with Mario Party you never know what will happen (especially with those chance spaces which can be brutal).
@jamzilla9606 жыл бұрын

@@mariopartylegacy The only time I can remember turning it down is when it was a choice between that and stealing a star, but I can imagine also doing it if it's late in the game and you're close to overtaking an opponent for the Coin Star (at least in the early games where the Coin Star always appears as long as you have bonus stars enabled). That way you effectively steal a star from an opponent AND get to keep your coins for a tiebreaker.
@markymark4434 жыл бұрын
there's also the possibility of it being daytime and you taking the gamble in Mario Party 6 Faire Square that the star will cost 5 or 10 coins at night. Could be a risky strat that relies on RNG that could be smart if you're several stars behind and don't have enough coins to buy the amount of stars you need to come back and it's the last few turns.

No one had a start yet at that point, and no one wanted to be the first person to get a star because we all knew it would just be stolen immediately if we got it lol. Let's say I had 3 stars and 60 coins and my opponent had 4 stars and 51ish coins. It was more advantageous for me to take the star away from my opponent and have 4 stars and 10 coins (while they had 3 stars and 50 coins now) than to have less coins and the same amount of stars as my opponent who was in the lead. In this case, purchasing the star would have guaranteed I lost. It is certainly a rare occurrence, but I'm glad the option is there.

The star space was right before Boo and he had enough coins to steal a star, but not enough to buy a star and then also steal a star on the same turn. So he warps to the star, says no to buying it, and then steals a star using Boo instead. At least within the 1st game there is a point {though it does only rarely come up) to saying no (along with saving coins for boo). That is when there is a race for the coin star in the last couple of turns {bonus star awarded for high score of most coins carried}. If you are currently in the lead for that race, but could easily be overtaken at its current amount {say by a blue space or minigame}, you could say no to preserve your lead and increase your score for that race. Now this could mean that a foe will get the star that you left on the board, but because you ensured the bonus star, it becomes a wash. {Something which would also happen if you bought the star on the board, but lost out on the coin star because of it} However you also have 20 extra coins saved by not buying the star in case of a tie break. Played Mario Party all the time during the N64 era, and I think it only came up 2-3 in over 100 games, but it did happen.

I remember in Mario party DS on Bowser's pinball machine I would land on the happening space that allows you to bet coins and spin a wheel and if you won, you'd get 2, 3, or 5 times the amount back. I would always select x5 and make the wheel land right where I needed it to with skill (and a bit of luck) after betting the max number of coins (99). Long story short, I'd max out my coins to 999 and have no troubles getting a bunch of stars at the end of a round of Bowser's pinball machine!

Super Mario Party: reason to choose pass. Let’s say the star is 1 space from the lakitu to steal a star - and it is the last turn. No one else is even close to getting the star, but you don’t have enough to both steal a star and get the star (you only have 30-39 coins). You have 3 stars, the person in first place has 4 stars with 50+ coins. If you steal from them you would take the lead by 1 star, but if you just got the star and didn’t have enough for the steal, they would win by coins as you both would have 4 stars. If you steal - they would have 3 stars and you would have 4. But that’s just a theory. A GAME THEORY! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Why did I bother to write all of that. I just needed to say maybe if stealing is the better option in the situation and the situation is very rare. Anyway thanks for reading

It can be considered to be a legitimate strategy to pass up on a star in order to get better deals on orbs or better spins when winning duels in MP7, or to mess with the other players, or have a coin monopoly and not have to worry about losing stars ever. Then you can get become dominant later in the game for example. Some notable scenarios would be waiting for a good deal on Faire Square, or in case there's 5 stars in play at once like in MP5. Having a ton of coins at the end of a game can be extremely powerful pretty much. Though usually it's good just blindly always accepting stars may not always be the key to winning especially early in the game.

Saying no to the star can be a good plan in a ton of cases. If it places you on the first place while a player is just before Boo to steal your star in Mario Party 1 2 or 3, or when you are about to land on a star steal orb in Mario Party 5-7. They are there, they are just incredible rare. I've refused stars in the last turn to have more coins than another player, and I won by having more coins after the bonus stars. Also, if the star is at a hard to reach location, it might be a good idea to refuse it if you are in the lead, as other players will have a hell of a time catching up to you (Deep Bloober Sea, behind the key gate, or right after the giant row of ?-spaces in the top left). In Mario Party 2 there is one particular star in Space Land I rarely get to buy, that's the one in the top key gate there where Boo also is. Just want to say: there are good reasons to refuse. They are just pretty rare, as halfway the board you won't refuse a star if you need to catch up. Saving your cash and stealing one instead might be a better idea though! ;-)

A situation you might want to say no is in Horror Land specifically. I actually have a strategy about saying ‘no’ to getting a star, but has to follow these guidelines: -You must be in the lead -Must be the final 5 turns -Has to be a traditional board (one that has the star change places when you say ‘yes’) With that, let’s say you’re tied in stars with 2nd and you have the coin lead by 50 coins with the star being far from 2nd place, saying NO has an advantage cuz if you say yes, there is a chance the next star could be right in front of 2nd place and buying the star was worthless. You can do this with a one star lead as well but that’s just my thought.

In Mario Part 2 theres a double toad event that can be caused by bowser where one Toad is real and one is fake. If you want to secure your lead and not lose a star on a 50/50 chance then thats the best time to say no.

Usually it's MP2 and MP3 in which I usually say no because my friend is so close to a Boo and had enough to steal a star, so I say no. MP3 on the other hand, has so much scenarios such as cellar phone, boo bell, plunder chest etc which makes it harder to say yes to a star. The newer games however, has less scenarios that put me in that position but that might just be me.

because of the star stealing mechanic. If you're in second place with 30 coins, and the person in first is winning with a 1 star advantage, and a ton of coins, if you simply buy the star on your turn, you end up with the same number of stars, but less coins, meaning you're still in second. However, if you skip the star and steal the star from 1st place in the same turn, then suddenly you're in first. This is very unlikely to happen, and would really only benefit someone on the last turn or near the last turn, but it's good that it's an option for that scenario.

I actually played a game of Mario Party 4 a few years ago where it was the correct move to not buy a star. Nobody had a star at that point, but two people had Boo's Crystal Ball, so they were ready to steal the first star they could. For something like six or seven turns, anyone who passed by the star decided to pass it up. Eventually I bought a Gaddlight and kept myself safe, and that's what ended up winning me that game.

1 very specific reason not to get a star is if it is at the end of the game and you are tied with someone. you have the most coins out of anyone (9 more coins then him), but the same amount of stars. if you buy that star and one of the bonus stars is one for the most coins (the others don't go to either of you), then you will lose because he will once again have the same amount of stars, but he will now be in 1st because he has 1 more coin than you. If you would've said no to the star, you would've gotten that bonus star and won.

Avoiding grabbing stars has actually a few strategy implementations: When playing 2 vs 2 in early Mario Party games (A team variant some like to play) getting stars may not always be the best option, since Chance time is a good way for a single player to gimp the other team late-game, or bait them into using chance time. In almost all Mario Party games, you can use 50 coins to steal a star. This gives yo the benefit of gaining a star, and making your opponent lose a star. IF you happen to be too overloaded with coins, this may be a more efficient option then just grabbing a star from the board. In Mario Party 6 in specific, on Faire Square, the price of the star varies. At daytime, the star is always 20. At night time, the star is 5, 10, 30, or 40. Sometimes you have to say no to the star in order to get a better deal.
