Awsome video. After I changed the header gasket on my dads 69 z/28 camaro it started to backfire. I might of plugged in one spark plug wire the wrong way, for some reason none of the plugs or wires match up to any cylinder. I must be reading it wrong. I now understand how this all works and ill take a look again, Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

Thank you . That is great to hear. Cool that you are fixing up the 69. Fun car. I love that year. Those feel like you are driving a old school racing stock car. Well, if it is back firing this will for sure clear it up. I bought a car once that was backfiring and the guy sold it for cheap. He said he thought it had a burnt valve. I went home and fixed the firing order and it ran perfectly. It took me a really long time to truly understand this. So I wanted to make the video for others who may be trying to figure it out. The cool thing is that once you figure it out it is actually pretty simple. So you are definitely welcome and glad to help out! Keep up the good work!👍

@@fastflo1 yep, my dad said he originally bought it in the early 90s, the engine is a built motor with a racing cam, cherry bomb style muffler. Pretty much everything is stock. This car ran perfect but I told my dad it’s time to do spark plugs. I changed the 7 I Could get to. There was one in the middle of the header below it under on the passenger side. I tried everything possible to get it out with remove the header but nothing working. I tried different sockets, spark plug sockets spark plug wrenches. It’s just because of the way the aftermarket header was made. I truly believe this car is making close to 500 hp or maybe more. No clue. My dad does leave tire marking when he leaves the driveway and I hear him 5 blocks away, that’s the only car I see him do that in. As a kid I’m happy he’s having fun with his car because as you know when you get older you can’t do so many fun things anymore so I just want to make him happy. Later today I’m gonna take a look at the spark plug wires. Our other project is his 69 convertible Camaro he bought in 83 I believe. He never knew what that car was worth. He just though it was a cool car lol. We’ve got a 327 in it now, brand new less then 25 miles on it. Have to work on the wiring for the lights. I plan to put led sequential lights in it to make it a true classic car. Big sound system, apple car play. Overall this convertible will be his weekend/sport car. Thanks again for making the video.

If I remember correctly all gm v8 have the same firing order and are stamped on the intake manifold labeled firing order . ( Stock intake manifold )

Yes you are right. The same for both big and small block. I have always thought it was really cool the manifolds have the firing order on them. Pretty convenient! 😀👍

Hi does the #1 on the breaker points distributor cap still point towards the #1 cylinder? I found a diagram that shows the number one on the distributor cap pointing more towards the #4 cylinder🤔
@fastflo1
@fastflo1 Жыл бұрын
Hi, Good question. To be really honest with you. The point system or the HEI distributor does not make a difference. They are both going to send a spark out wherever the rotor is pointed. So for whatever reason they chose where to put #1 on the cap is so you could refer to it in a manual. Honestly if you really wanted to you could make #1 on the cap wherever you want. Here is why. When you time the engine before putting the distributor in. The # 1 cylinder is on TDC. Compression stroke. Both valves closed, ready to fire. All it needs is a spark. Now when you put the distributor in is when you decide where the rotor will point. It does need to line up with the oil pump on the bottom, but regardless you are going to point it somewhere. You could literally put it in wherever it drops. The important part is now putting on the distributor cap and seeing what tower the rotor it is pointing at. That is where you want to hook up the first spark plug wire and hook it up to the number #1 cylinder that is ready for spark. Then just follow the rest of the firing order. Now the next guy may not be able to figure out what is going on. But if you know you could figure it out easy. So if you want to point it at the #4 cylinder that is fine. Just know that if #1 cylinder is on tdc, the rotor needs to be hitting the wire going to the #1 cylinder even if it pointed at #4 or another you choose. Or you may buy a motor and it may not have a cap, but distributor. Just put the engine on #1TDC and see where the rotor is pointed. Hook up your First wire on the cap to #1 and you are set.... Hopefully that helps. Let me know if you need any other help I will do my best.

@@fastflo1 Thank you for your explanation. makes sense now. I bought the Mr. gasket TDC whistle tool and will use it tomorrow to make sure I'm at TDC. I have used my thumb before, but I want to double check. I had a 79 nova and blazer with the HEI and never had an issue with this. Now I have a 73 Nova with points did the same thing and had a flame come out my quadrajet so I knew right away I did something wrong with my timing. Always learning something new on these older cars.😎😎

@@GarageRatt You are welcome. Sorry for the late response I just was this today. Before I go to far. You can have a backfire in the carb from the timing being retarted and the firing order correct. But anyway. Were you able to get the firing order with the points right? I have used points distributors for many years . So if you need some tips on those I could surely give you some if yuu need any. I love learning always on these older cars too👍

@@fastflo1 good info bud. I just converted from points to HEI. Was a very straight forward conversion and I did notice better performance. But I been having trouble with these made in china modules, so I bought some NOS delco remy of Ebay going to give them a try.😎😎

Thank you ? How do I adjust the idle on mine don't know where the adjuster is I have the same set up like your ss
@fastflo1
@fastflo1 3 жыл бұрын
Nice! That’s cool you got the SS. I will look and check to be sure. Normally a set screw on the driver side just behind the cable hookup . I know this carb is newer than I have had before . But I think it’s in the same spot . If you activate the Throttle mechanism by hand , look around at what it stops against when it returns to the closed position . That should be the set screw for the idle adjustment. The other side of where it is hitting should be a flat head screw head , with a spring , and I believe. I will look hopefully tomorrow when I get home from work and double check.👍🏻

An excellent explanation & simple way to remember thank you for sharing! Quick question, does the motor have to be pulled out to get it balanced or can that be done while in the engine bay?
@fastflo1
@fastflo1 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You are welcome. I am glad you found it to be helpful. I would recommend taking the engine out. The pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, harmonic balancer, flywheel all go in for balancing to be weight matched, and spun balanced. It is commonly referred to as the reciprocating assembly. I highly recommend getting balancing done. Your motor ill perform better and last longer! Guaranteed results. This engine was built in 1999 and had that done. Still going strong today and the engine has been run hard its entire life. Has not had the low end touched since. Before that I went through about 15 engines that blew up. This one was the last motor I built!

I do believe on Oldsmobile they spin counter clockwise. So just hook up the wires in the same firing order 18436572. After 1 just hook up 8 next going counterclockwise and follow the order next 436572

See that's what is weird as fuck.... TDC has the rotor 1 position at the 7 on your diagram on this 76 K5 Blazer. Weird..
@fastflo1
@fastflo1 2 жыл бұрын
So, is the rotor pointed at the number 7 cylinder at tic? And what cylinder is that plug wire plugged into? 7 or 1? Because the rotor can point anywhere, as long as tdc and number one are plugged in at the rotor .

@@NathanClevenger1337 nice! Ya you can put it and have it point in weird directions because of the oil pump pickup. It is nice to have the distributor setup right, makes it a lot less confusing! Glad you got it figured out!
