Chase Mason is the frontman for the band Gatecreeper, an Arizona based death metal band that isn’t scared to challenge tradition. Finding heavy music through his love for skateboarding, Chase fell into addiction at a young age and since getting sober, 9 years ago, has put his time and energy into Gatecreeper and his other creative endeavors. Spend a scorching 120 degree day in the desert with Chase as we talk skateboarding, music, art.

Man I just found this documentary on chase and it blows my mind how far he’s come since we skated together when we were in Junior Highschool. He was always so quite and soft spoken but overall a super rad dude and always fun to skateboard with. Even if it was 120 degrees outside we would always skate 10 houses down at my buddies house on all his wood ramps we all built. Pushing each other to learn new tricks! So sick to watch him still pushing around, I remember watching him try to double kick flip for hours. All before he got into hard drugs and we all went different paths. So this really takes me back and I love it.

I feel as if I'm connected with Chase in some ways after seeing this video. Not just with playing music but with his life experiences. I use to skateboard when I was younger, and also had a very bad drug addiction for over 15 years. Pain pills and heroin were my demons. I have been sober for quite a few years now. I played bass guitar for a band called Thorns of the Carrion for a while. They have actually released a few albums, and are on KZbin. I'm not sure of the label that the albums were on or if on one at all. I wanted to be sober for my 3 boys, and turn my life around through music and a wood working business I've been trying to get off the ground. I feel so much more inspired after seeing this video and especially Chase speaking out about his addiction. Stay metal!!!....and please!!!....don't do drugs folks!!!!
