Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo - 5 Years On...

It's been just over five years since Seb Loeb Rally Evo was released, and after picking it up cheap on Steam, I thought it was worth revisiting it.
Let's take a look at how well it's aged.

Incredibly slept on Rally sim. A lot of people judged it on its demo and made their mind up. My only gripe is the audio and engine sounds. The rally stages are some of the best I’ve ever driven, they’re unreal.

I’m playing if now in 2022. I see a lot of negative comments on the game, mainly because people cannot handle the cars but once you’ve mastered the controls, no issues at all. I find the game enjoyable and like you said, some of the stages are unreal. The graphic rendering could have been better but that is not a problem. The sounds as well needs improvement but overall, it’s a good rally sim!

This game is a diamond in the rough! a true gem, don't let the bad reviews sway you from at least trying it. like others said once you can harness the control of the cars its a blast , and it has great looking scenery for the courses. Its an new/old school rally game all on its own, in its short comings truly is its charm.

I agree completely! I just purchased it on sale on the PlayStation store for $1.99, it was 90% off. And I’m playing it with my G29 racing wheel on PS5. Other than the graphics and sound, it’s quite good. The physics feel pretty solid. It has definitely got better asphalt physics than the Dirt Rally games, the dirt physics aren’t quite as good, but they’re not bad either. After 15 hours of playtime so far, I consider getting it at that price an absolute steal.

Just bought this game for 3€ full DLC and on a G920 it's amazing. It feels great with just minor adjustments to the wheel. The graphics are also very beautiful and without over the top filters or effects, so it runs great. The only major letdown are the car sounds, they are really week. But since the game is very immersive you will soon forget that. The car and track roster are also amazing. It's really a beautiful diamond in the rough.

Not as polished as WRC or Dirt, but it has an understated character of its own, it has a nice feel to it, and the stages offer a really good drive.

Bought it today when it saw it was on sale on Steam. I have to respectfully disagree about gamepad setup. It handles very well for me on an Xbox Series controller straight up, much much better than WRC Generations, which I had to comb the internet to get a perfect setup for, and even then, I wasn't satisfied with it. You're spot on about the braking: the WRC games feel like the axles are going to detach from the rest of the car under braking, SLRE feels extremely close to perfect. The car list is phenomenal, and the fact that you can use any car on any track actually surprises me. Ignore the negative reviews, people criticise things that they don't understand. Edit: I also love how the developers have mixed it up with the usual rally locations by setting them in different parts of the countries to other rally games. I believe I haven't seen that side of Finland since Colin McRae Rally 2.0!

I really do hope that Milestone is doing another rally title like Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo which fulfills all the potential that game had but with more polish on the PC version.

I remember the time at which people talked sh¡t about this title and to an extent, I could understand their frustration given how its rivals at the time proved miracles but we have to keep this in mind, Milestone was a far inferior gaming studio compared to the likes of, let's say Codemasters, so that was pretty much a given factor. Even then, what we got in the end was such an enjoyable rally simulator created with love. Also the only car that sounds good in this game is the Stratos.

This has just become available again, and based on the reviews here I think I'm going to jump on it. If the physics are decent on gamepad, I can live with the sound/graphics. Car list is also very good. Glad I found this review!

I just tried the demo from steam with my gamepad for 5 minutes- lightyears ahead of DR2.0 in terms of physics and handling. So annoying that decent titles like this and V Rally 4 get judged prematurely and downvoted into oblivion. Yes these other games have their niggles but people need to stop kissing Codemasters’ ass and treating them like the be all and end all of the genre. I cant tolerate their rally stages and by comparison the demo Mexico stage i just drove in slre is a delight! Just paid for the full game and downloading now

Just passed 200 hrs on this gem, driving the awesome Apricale stage. I'm using GimX to emulate a G27 with my AccuForce wheel and Heusinkveld pedals. Can be a pain to set up in game and sometimes the game will eff up the wheel settings. But when everything works it is brilliant and with everything maxed out at 1440 it looks the part too and runs smooth as butter.

@@flightis3dollars I was attempting to work out a way to do it software wise with remapping workarounds but from my research...it would eliminate ffb. So it would still need to act like a supported wheelbase. I really want this game to be shown some love. It's a shame they don't just do a simple update.

For PC players who are getting those annoying stutters during stages despite decent hardware, there is a sure-shot way to mitigate this almost entirely which should work for any hardware. Download RTSS if you don't already have it and create a profile for the game in RTSS. Do not cap the frame rate but use the tool's scanline sync feature to act as an adaptive vsync even if you don't have a compatible display. The appropriate value for scanline sync will vary depending on your resolution but I am playing on a 720p handheld and -40 works best for me. Also ensure that you do NOT disable full screen optimisations for the SLRE program as that forces the app into fullscreen exclusive and you will get terrible screen tearing. I've tried the above with very low end hardware and across intel integrated graphics, AMD and nVidia cards and it works flawlessly to deliver a smooth 60 fps

@@zakariab6552 Well, I realized I like "arcade style" racing games more than the realistic simulators. I'm finding it a little hard, the first car you get is very hard to control when you're on dirt roads, but in general is a decent game. I also bought Overcooked Gourmet Edition and I'm enjoying that game a lot more, I play it with my dad and we're having a blast!, but it's a completely different genre, so we can't compare them. If you're into rally, I think you'll like the game, and even if you don't like it for some reason, at least it was only 2 bucks haha but if you like racing games like Burnout, I don't think you will enjoy this one that much. I hope this helps!

Do be careful! There was a bug in the game where a reward vehicle might had a decent chance not be available to appear and use in Garage when you obtained them! Don't know about vehicle you bought, but reward vehicle always happened sometimes!

What you need to do is to NOT SELECT USE CAR by choosing "No" when the option given. Then, head back to the garage. If you are lucky, the reward vehicle will be there. Once there, use that car in an event at least once so the game could save the progress.

Car models are not that great. Engine sound neither. Overall the game feels unfinished. I would love to create my own rally, pick the stages, weather, tyres, to have more freedom. But this is the only rally sim where i can feel that the car has 4 wheels!! and not a big wheel in the middle of the car like the other games. And the replays are the best, a real pleasure to watch them.

I spent so much time trying to get my csw v2.5 working with this title. Ultimately, I did find a solution but my God, what a pain in the ass! It's beyond me why the devs didn't push out a fix for better wheel/pedal support

It's a great game, I originally had it on the PS4, it worked with my t 150. I also bought it on pc for about 3 quid but the bugger has never worked with my thrust master t gt.

I have the others:- DR, DR2, WRC8 + 9 but still enjoy this title. Pity hand brake is not analogue and I pine for a frame rate boost on Xbox

Got this for £1.50 on MS Store for XBSX (sadly without the DLC, which they are still asking full price for). Runs beautifully, but it's showing its age. Very enjoyable, despite the twitchy control via gamepad - the remedy for me is (as you say in your video) using the hood view, using the brakes and - for me - having the ideal raceline showing at all times (which helps me to anticipate braking zones). It really is a rally sim that dares the player to hit the floor, but (again, as you say) it will punish you instantly for pushing a bit too much. I'd say it's a bargain for what I paid for it.

In my opinion, the game is quite decent. Have it on the series S. The graphics is dates of course but it takes time to master the controls. The game is jerky but it’s really good. It’s quite a challenge to complete the game and to date i’m still struggling to complete some of the events. I still love it though due to the older rally cars lineup. Still play from time to time

i just downloaded it for 2 euros on steam and its absolutely amazing. It sucks you in like a spell. Controlwise i don't get why they delivered such brilliant physics but aren't able to implement the most basic input listeners like even Revolt from 1999 had where it listenes to gamepad as well as keyboard and steering wheel inputs to get those set up. Some keys are even hardcoded like the "D" key for rewind, which isn't even an option to be chosen in the controls menu. These are things which could be very easily patched. Maybe if enough people annoy Milestone 's support they will do it. Then the game could gain a cult following like Richard Burns Rally, i'm quite sure.

Great video. Nice to see some attention on this hidden gem. It's physics model works (surprisingly) extremely good when playing with a (for me PS4) controller too. Way better than Dirt 5/ Rally 1/2.

Nice review! This game is an handfull of problems on the Pc. This game deserves a full service patch from the developers. Seb Loeb deserves a super game like RBR or Colin Mcrae. I realy think this game has a lot of potential and thanks to some moders i could in a way play the game on minimal bug issues, but the control setup is messing with an hornet nest... the sounds and codriver is shit....! The visuals could be better with no lags.

I tried the demo of Seb Rally Evo and kept on getting micro stutters. It never ran smooth even though my pc runs Dirt rally fine. It stopped me from buying the full game. The same happened with other Milestone games such as MotoGp 17 that only ran smooth if I played with the keyboard & WRC. It's really strange because I have Milestone games on my Xbox 360 and never had an issue.

This game could have been the best, the tracks and car models are incredible, graphics and frame rate are perfect but the controls are just dreadful :( every other rally game controls as you'd expect but this is so bad :(

its a great great game, and not all the cars sounds crap, dalta S4 and celica GT4 sound great, but dont forget to cycle your camera at the start of each stage or the audio can be bugged. its just a shame that newer wheels dont work with it. it got sh*t on big time by the so called sim racing experts that dont know which end of a rally car to point at a corner and most believed the crap.

Could somebody wants to creat sound mod for that game ??I think that good idea is take sounds from dirt 3 or dirt4 and change original cars sounds in game . I know that is program Mixfile ReMixer to modifcate .MIX files in Milestone games.
