im german and my grandma has been getting a bunch of calls from scammers like this, and so have many of her old people friends. I've heard her talk about it and she says that as soon as she hears someone speak English, she just hangs up again, and so do most of her friends. I feel like especially old people here won't take any calls if they're not in German, and even less if they have an accent they can't easily understand. And the younger people who actually speak English well are already too aware of scammers like thid

I'm sure he occasionally gets some weird requests, and that "I'm sorry I can't divulge that info" is a typical response, but he needs to quit being so complacent and actually listen to each person on the phone. Thank goodness she doesn't use a computer, but people are still naive about giving personal information out over the phone. When I get an unknown number calling and they don't leave a voicemail, the number gets blocked immediately. No second chances. As a former bank clerk in Germany, I can assure you, that the guy from the Bank did everything right. There is a law in Germany called Bankgeheimnis / lit. Bank secret. It prohibits to give any information to a non-authorized person. Even the confirmation of an account number would be a violation of that law. So he did everything by the book. But I guess imho that the legal-department would monitor the account number just in case AND also call the customer.

@@jose-Maki Not intentionally, but in a way he was; as Charlie says above, the law doesn't allow bankers to even confirm if an account number is linked to their bank. If the banker had've said 'Thank you for this, we'll deal with it,' it would have implied the account was with them, and thus broken the law. The only way they could avoid implying an account was with them was with what they said - 'this isn't with us, and I can't talk on this further, sorry'.
@Demolishionist
@Demolishionist 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowtheBowserKing I think his approach was off. Knowing that they can't provide any information or confirmation of information, simply telling the bank that this account is currently being compromised as we speak and to please contact the customer immediately. The bank would, of course, not confirm anything but would thank you for the information and most likely contact the customer right away. I don't think anything more could be done or expected.

I'm pretty sure the legal department told them to just say nothing. That would make sense considering he clammed up right after calling them. As a german, I was always wondering in those scammer videos..... Do you really get your money back when you got scammed and call your bank? Or any helpful support at all? But now that I listent to a employee from the german sparkasse (my old bank institution, just a different city), this is exactly the kind of help I was expecting. Even if there is absolutely no risk in taking a look in the matter, they just do NOTHING and tell you that they can't help you. And calling the police.. that has even less options to actually stop this scam from happening. The only positive note is, that the scammers german is so bad, that they won't be able to scam a lot of people that don't speak english, which is fortunally the eldery (their main target)

It has been rampant in Germany with scammers from turkey for a few years now. The classical tech support scams are rare, what is much more common is that old folks get called up by "police" that a robbery is about to happen at their place and they should handover their belongings to the police. A few minutes later a family member of the scammers will show up in a fake police uniform and take their stuff people willingly hand over to them... Or they get called that their grandson (they got their name by Phishing or something) was convicted and they need to pay bail or he will go to jail (there is no real bail system in Germany but old folks are naive) and they hand overthe money to someone showing up at their door 30 mins later It's really bad because the people call from turkey and have "their people" over here to make sure the money gets to them fast. Also, cash rarely leaves trails
