Just because you get a call from a number that looks official, doesn't necessarily mean that it is! Scammers are using VOIP software to spoof their numbers. I'll show you how, and then get a little revenge :)

@PleasantGreen I wonder if you could do an episode on Elon Musk quantum AI trading platform scam that appears to be going around on social media sites. I think lots of people might be falling for it. I was interested in it, but when I read all the people praising it in the comments, they all seem to be fake accounts. I’m not sure how the scam works. I don’t want to enter my details to find out. Perhaps you could find out how and what they are scamming. Thanks I love your channel 👍

I got an IRS scam call many years ago when it was the predominant scam. I was at work and put it on speakerphone and had half of my office laughing because of the shenanigans I put them through, one of which was I had a co-worker pull up a zip code in the middle of absolutely nowhere in Nevada and pretended like all I had was a bicycle to get there. I then said "I think I need to call Walmart before I ride all the way over there to make sure they have the gift cards I need" much to the annoyance of the scammer who was screaming at me that I was going to be arrested. I called Walmart (really a co-worker pretending to be Walmart) who told me that it was a scam and that I should hang up. The scammer said some choice 4 letter (and Hindi) words at me and hung up. That was 45 minutes of that scammer's time he will never get back! It was great fun.

This is messed up because if someone in your family needs to use someone else's phone in an emergency, you don't know if it's legit them or someone trying to scam you and/or getting a sample of your voice to use AI to call your family pretending to be you. And these people are everywhere, sadly. Great work putting them out there!

In the UK, there's a lot of scammers that spoof the numbers of other random people in their database. If you call the number back, you'll get someone on the other side who is thoroughly confused by why you're calling: and I've been on the other side of this conversation too, being called by someone asking about a call I know I didn't make. This makes it very hard, and very confusing in fact, to track down missed calls!

These piles of scum also make it hard for legit tech support. I used to work as a "2nd level" tech support for Bell Canada (for anything beyond internet connectivity like malware, printer setup, etc.), which customers pay for on their Bell bill monthly. They would be transferred to us or come in through chats, where we would then remotely connect to their computer to troubleshoot, clean, etc. I had a few customers accusing me of scamming and asking how they know it's not a scam. All I could say was we won't ask for any personal details, for any money, and even tried to provide the main number for our business, verify Bell's support number to confirm and which province I was in. Even when they said no, all I could do then was suggest they bring their computer to a local technician then and, if they aren't going to use our service, call Bell to cancel their subscription.

To be fair to them, using remote desktop application without knowing the person on the other end is a rather big no-no when it comes to system security. And it's very easy advice to give that even most non-computer savvy people understand. Having done emergency IT work for multiple companies (often after their system went belly up due to poor IT management), I always advice people to only use remote connect either when they connect to their own system or when they call their IT service provider and then only when they know the company and could physically go there and only when talking to someone they know. And even then only if instructions over the phone wouldn't work.

Don't underestimate women. They have an innate inherently suspicious nature: they're not easily fooled and they can easily spot a con trick without the help of any videos. For instance, you've never seen a woman trying to put money down on The Three Card Trick, have you? Elderly women excepted because their mental faculties are diminishing, women are usually very careful about trusting people where money is concerned. The only confidence tricks that they occasionally fall for are Romance Scams and anything to do with luck, astrology, or fortune telling.

I have to answer incoming calls as part of my business, but as soon as I figure out that it is not a customer and it is not someone I know, I just immediately hang up on them and then block that number. They may call back from a different number, but I will just hang up on them again. I do not have any lengthy discussion with someone who I do not know and who is not a potential customer. If they say they are from my bank or from some company I use, I tell them I will call them right back, and then I hang up on them and call the bank or the company directly, if I think it might really be them.

Someone spoofed MY number and people were getting spam calls. I started to get messages, so I called each one back to tell them they were being scammed and how to protect themselves. I nearly had to change my number of 22 years when it stopped.

Here is how to disrupt the scammers who call: Once you say "hello" you instantly hit the mute button. They typically stay on the line for 20 seconds to one minute. You can even come back on the line after 10 seconds and say "hello" and hit mute again. I have had the scammers on for five minutes. Put them on your speaker mute so you can hear them but they can't hear you. One person doing this will make no difference, but if everyone put them on mute instead of hanging up we could seriously disrupt the scammer networks. Thanks Ben for all you do.

Yeah, I once got a call from an unknown number, the woman speaking with a strong Indian accent who called ME, said instead of 'hallo' that she needed my name and certain account details. I looked at the receiver and asked who she is and what she wants. She then told me she was from my bank. I laughed at her and said 'nice try', then she got angry and I hung up. Then I called my bank. She was actually telling the truth. I mean who trained her? I always call back on an established number, when anyone official calls me, then I know I am speaking with the right person.

I love how much all you scambaiters do to help people who are less scam savvy, it doesn’t have to be a an elderly people as young people fall for too, I have had many people try things through confusion, a lot of this is scripted, sometimes the scripts are just ridiculous but some could be convincing. I told all my family and showed many KZbin videos so they fully understand what they do to try and convince you.
