Here is how to disrupt the scammers who call: Once you say "hello" you instantly hit the mute button. They typically stay on the line for 20 seconds to one minute. You can even come back on the line after 10 seconds and say "hello" and hit mute again. I have had the scammers on for five minutes. Put them on your speaker mute so you can hear them but they can't hear you. One person doing this will make no difference, but if everyone put them on mute instead of hanging up we could seriously disrupt the scammer networks. Thanks Ben for all you do.

I got an IRS scam call many years ago when it was the predominant scam. I was at work and put it on speakerphone and had half of my office laughing because of the shenanigans I put them through, one of which was I had a co-worker pull up a zip code in the middle of absolutely nowhere in Nevada and pretended like all I had was a bicycle to get there. I then said "I think I need to call Walmart before I ride all the way over there to make sure they have the gift cards I need" much to the annoyance of the scammer who was screaming at me that I was going to be arrested. I called Walmart (really a co-worker pretending to be Walmart) who told me that it was a scam and that I should hang up. The scammer said some choice 4 letter (and Hindi) words at me and hung up. That was 45 minutes of that scammer's time he will never get back! It was great fun.

In the UK, there's a lot of scammers that spoof the numbers of other random people in their database. If you call the number back, you'll get someone on the other side who is thoroughly confused by why you're calling: and I've been on the other side of this conversation too, being called by someone asking about a call I know I didn't make. This makes it very hard, and very confusing in fact, to track down missed calls!

These piles of scum also make it hard for legit tech support. I used to work as a "2nd level" tech support for Bell Canada (for anything beyond internet connectivity like malware, printer setup, etc.), which customers pay for on their Bell bill monthly. They would be transferred to us or come in through chats, where we would then remotely connect to their computer to troubleshoot, clean, etc. I had a few customers accusing me of scamming and asking how they know it's not a scam. All I could say was we won't ask for any personal details, for any money, and even tried to provide the main number for our business, verify Bell's support number to confirm and which province I was in. Even when they said no, all I could do then was suggest they bring their computer to a local technician then and, if they aren't going to use our service, call Bell to cancel their subscription.
@relo99911 ай бұрын
To be fair to them, using remote desktop application without knowing the person on the other end is a rather big no-no when it comes to system security. And it's very easy advice to give that even most non-computer savvy people understand. Having done emergency IT work for multiple companies (often after their system went belly up due to poor IT management), I always advice people to only use remote connect either when they connect to their own system or when they call their IT service provider and then only when they know the company and could physically go there and only when talking to someone they know. And even then only if instructions over the phone wouldn't work.

Sometimes at the bank I work at, back office wants to call and do verification of income or whatever. When that happens most of our customers come into the branch and have bank employees call them back via internal numbers to get the verification done, because I understand being skeptical. Lol

My bank has never called me. Why would they? I never do any online banking or put any of my financial (or other identifying details) online. I'm not lazy or trying to show off with slick technology, so I don't use debit cards, or pay for stuff with my phone. I only use ATMs or go to my bank in person to take money out. Do you know how easy it is to get good discounts nowadays if you pay by cash for bigger items?

I love you guys for doing this and educating people. My father recently came into some money after an Agent Orange settlement, and they've already tried getting him a few times. Luckily he knows or has the sense to ask me before doing anything. I've also been getting a lot of scam texts and calls, and because of you I've really taken to just wasting their time. I made a character with a backstory and everything. Make em thing they gonna get money after a couple days of wasting their time, then I call them out and block em. My wife hates that I do it, but it's so much fun lol

What really burns me is the fact that phone companies do NOT seem to be in a rush to do something about this spoofing stuff. WHY is that? Are the phone companies making MONEY, no mater what? If You have somebody saying "Can You hear me?" Do NOT answer YES! the scammers record You saying YES and can use Your voice to cause ALL kinds of problems! I had some woman call me and I KNEW that the number was "SPOOFED". She said HELLO , I said GOOD-BYE and terminated the call IMMEDIATELY! When I go to bed at night, I turn OFF the speaker on my cell phone to avoid the jerks trying to start early.
