these been a few cases where target/walmart/ any place has caught elderly, and helped htem before it was too late. now walmarts have signs on self checkouts that say something abt it and fraud.

I'm a police officer and I've been called to a few different stores when elderly people buy gift cards and the clerk talked to them about what they were up to. There's been plenty of times I've had cases where the victim went through 10s of thousands and you know there were plenty of people that knew what was happening and let it go. Even more disappointing is the cases where I've laid the situation out clearly and let them know in no uncertain terms that they were being taken advantage of and their money was stolen, and they are so deep in the scam that they refuse to believe me and willingly keep sending more money anyway. I'm sure lots of people working checkout counters have told elderly people not to buy the cards and the victim told them "mind your business" and bought them anyway.

At the end of the day.. They don't get paid enough to help people not to get scammed, they work there and if someone wants to buy them then they're just doing their job. It comes down to people wanting to help outside of their job description.

As someone who has worked in a grocery store, part of the in store training you receive for customer service/money transfer is identifying suspicious transaction requests. People taking instructions over the phone, and people requesting gift cards especially Elderly people are considered suspicious, and we are pressed to question why they are transferring money, and inform them they might be being scammed.

She waited until my uncle got home and told him she had to pay. He knew that sounded fishy so he called the actual PG&E and they told him she didnt owe anything.
