i watch a few of these scam baiters, and one of them speaks hindi and punjabi. i have learned a few insulting phrases and swear words in both languages now which I have used more than once with a few scam calls. It's made me want to learn both languages for real and become a scam baiter myself. Considering so many legitimate customer service call centers are based in countries that speak either language and often those are horrible experiences just because of the language barrier I feel that it would be a win win.

For a long time I wondered why the scammers never try to redeem the cards quicker than the victim could - since the codes are right there on the screen. I think it’s because the scammers make their money by selling UNredeemed cards/codes, since that’s less risky than putting the money into a Google Play account, which could be shut down or traced. Per @Nissan Skyline that also means that if you ever find out your grandma etc. got scammed this way, you should always try to redeem the cards anyway as fast as you can, since you might be faster than the scammers - though I’m sure they don’t wait too long!

That's basically the gist of it. Their goal is to monetize the gift cards by trading them for bitcoin, and then converting the bitcoin into cash. The primary service they use to do this is Paxful, which is a US-based peer-to-peer marketplace that allows users to buy bitcoin from other users using hundreds of different payment methods, including dozens of different types of gift cards. The most common gift cards traded on Paxful are Target, Wal-Mart, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and Steam Wallet. Paxful is a legitimate website that has a zero tolerance policy against fraud, but gift card laundering continues to be a major issue for them since it's extremely difficult to prove the validity of gift cards, especially gift card codes as it’s not possible to check the balance until the cards are redeemed. One of the steps they've taken to try and deter scammers from laundering illicit gift cards is raising their service fees for specific cards, like Amazon, Target and iTunes. The exchange rate is also really high, so sellers (and scammers) take a significant hit when trading gift cards on Paxful. For example, most iTunes gift cards are traded at 40 to 80 cents on the dollar. Once a scammer has exchanged their bitcoin and the buyer’s funds are in their bank account, the process of converting the gift cards into cash is complete. The entire process, from receipt of the gift card code to transferring cash into a bank account, is fairly quick. In one case, a woman was tricked into sending $1,800 in iTunes gift cards and the scammers were able to convert the card value into $700 cash in less than two and a half hours.

Nothing shows off the scammers' absolute acting CHOPS on display here more than going from genuinely upset about sending his neighbors to prison to the amazingly forced "Oh my god, sir" when he 'accidentally' transfers thousands of dollars.
