Some people kill humans to get money so that’s why there a lots of scammers in Nigeria and my mom was so happy she left Nigeria. This is an honest and dignified apology : Everyone, I am an Indian Citizen. It really makes me sad and ashamed that a bunch of cyber criminals from my country have cheated and stolen from many of you. I would do anything to bring these villainous marauders to book and prevent such fraud in future. Personally, I will stop at nothing than shoot them. Please accept my deepest and sincerest apologies on behalf of the law-abiding people of India! Not all Indians are attempting to prey on foreigners. Many of us will put an end to ourselves rather than defraud innocent people, foreigners or Indians. Also, please understand that tens of millions of Indian too get cheated and scammed in similar ( or worse ) manner by this kind of criminal savages, every year. But their stories go unreported and most of the evildoers get away with impunity. Most Indian police forces are corrupt and indifferent; but there are honest and committed men and women in uniform all over the country. Unfortunately, they get sidelined by the complicit coworkers or bosses. And though every right-thinking Indian would detest, the Indian justice system is slow and sometimes, ineffectual. Please don’t let racial hate and stereotyped images twist your views. There are good and bad people in every community, race, country and continent. Just because Hitler was an oppressive tyrant can we say all Germans ( or Austrians, to be precise ) are inhuman? Please exclude the non-complicit majority of us Indians from the evil acts of these beastly crooks. A time will come when their kind will get ultimately eliminated. Things will change, for sure. Thank you.

I'm nowhere near Nigeria. Met a retired lady who got into sending money to Nigeria (not going to disclose the amount). The scammer asked her to transfer the money to a bank in England. After 1 transfer he told her the money had not gone through so send it the second time. The lady never gave the reason for transferring money overseas. Not sure if it was for a sick relative or a business venture. The guy (supposedly in England) later disclosed he works for the Bank of Nigeria. If she had trouble sending money, she should try sending it to his boss directly. After 1 transfer, the lady got frustrated and started getting her friends to help her send money overseas (borrow money from them). Still didn't give the reason for sending the money. The last time we talked was 2 years ago. Not going to find out whether she lost all her retirement savings.

I spent a few years working in walmart customer service, and sadly, people fall for these *constantly*. Walmart has tons of rules in place to stop scammers like these, and so their requests are constantly evolving (that's why they wanted you to get 5 x $100 instead of just a single $500 card).

I worked management CVS for awhile and we had the exact same problem. An entire module of our training was looking out for these scams, and I'd catch about one per week on average. The most common one at the time was someone impersonating ebay to tell them that they'd won a car that they hadn't bid on, and to send the numbers off of ebay gift cards. I taught many "boomers" how email addresses are formatted and how ebay actually works during that time.

One asked me to call their agent, and I said, "I'll call as soon as I get out of surgery. I'm in the hospital right now having my vestigial tail removed." They said, "Oh, ok, but don't delay." I also used the same trick of asking how things were in some random town, and they fell for that too. It can be fun messing with them, and like you say, its nice to know you're wasting their time.
