Cold Steel makes some great value priced knives in 4116 Krupp. When Cold Steel redesigned their sheaths from the old pouch style to the molded Mora style, they should’ve included the thumb ramp and figured out a way to make the sheath ambidextrous. One other nice feature on the end of the handle is the thumb depression for reverse grip.

You didn't talk about the one thing that matters... Mora's are commonly a partial tang... what about the Finn Hawk?
@TedOfNod
@TedOfNod 3 жыл бұрын
That’s the one thing that matters to you? Screw the grind. Screw the handle. Screw the blade length. Screw the steel. Screw the sheath. This guy needs to know if a 4-inch carving knife has a long tang. 😆
@robertbrown8796
@robertbrown8796 3 жыл бұрын
If you are comparing two knives, and they have covered everything else, yes... I want that info also. Mira is a campsite workhorse, and has performed way better than its design should. If you’re trying to convince me to walk away from a solid tool, I want all the info. Full vs partial could be important if all the other spec’s are even and price is in a reasonable range, but feel free to ignore the fine points.
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 3 жыл бұрын
I fully agree that's important. I could go with the Finn Hawk if it has a stronger tang than the Mora. Btw. All my Mora HD did come with a 90 degree spine.
@stevehuffman7453
@stevehuffman7453 3 жыл бұрын
Finn Bear has a half length partial tang. Depending on model, the Mora has either a (full length) rat tail, or a full tang. Not a partial tang. As long as you don't do something stupid, like baron the knife, the CS and rat tail Mora's won't break. If you HAVE to baton your firewood, carve/whittle a daRn WEDGE from a piece of wood, and baton that, if you don't have a hatchet/tomahawk, or froe. Any knife will eventually break if abused enough. Batoning a knife IS abuse, and voids every major manufacturer's warranty!!!!
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevehuffman7453 That's not true. A simple and cheap Hultafors GK (some 12$) does say you can baton it even with a steel hammer. It's mostly American made knives that say that but than again they also say not to dry your cat in a microwave.

Mora is just like having your favorite steak knife out in the woods with you. Mora Forester is my go to. It can field dress a deer or slice tomatoes.
@alexrawleigh3167
@alexrawleigh3167 27 күн бұрын
Dingdong....I agree 100%. Mora has been around for a long time. Is there better knives out there?....maybe so but comparing price....there is no argument. Sweden and Austria over the years have made outstanding knives. I am ashamed to say how many mora's I own but I love them. I have several of the green foresters and have filed dressed many white tail with them. What I love about all mora's is how easy they are to sharpen. With this said...I have several of the finn hawks. Really good knife for the price. Have cleaned several deer with them as well. I know individuals citizens knives that don't have full tangs but these style of knives are not ment to do heavy batonning although mine have. Any knife can be destroyed if abused. If you told me I had to pick between the two....I would have to go with the Mora's. The design has not changed in over 100 years and Mora's have stood the test of time. In my opinion, there is not another knife on the market that can compare to a mora. There is a reason why Morakniv has been in business for so many years. Qaulity is outstanding and for the average outdoor enthusiast, the price allows anyone to own a very reliable and outstanding blade.

I wear an XL leather glove, and usually have to stretch them out a bit for them to fit comfortably. I actually notice a HUGE difference between the Mora Companion, and the companion HD handles. I have half a dozen Moras in kits, and packs as back up blades, and in my cooking kits as dedicated clean cooking blades.

I've had the Finn Bear from Cold Steel for a while and despite it being a good knife, it does have a scandi grind, but it looks like it was made using the drop forged method, then a primary edge was added. Same thing with their Outdoorsman Lite.

Hi guy, I like your channel more than other one in the US, or better same as "The Outdoor Gear Review". Both of you got the right package for making videos, you got a good charakter I think. The german steel 1.4116 ist not a high performer, don´t hold the edge long enough. But Cool Steel makes a better heat treatment than steel companys in germany. I am from germany and only 1 h away from the blade town calls Solingen.In Solingen are the companys like Puma, Boker, Herbertz, Eickhorn and much more. Our knifemaker could make a better heat treatment but they slept for a long time. I don´t know why, especially Puma Knifes use this bloody steel, I don´t know why. For Bushcraft I would take the Sandvic 14C28N as the Garberg has or the 80CR2V as the Terävä Jääkeripuuko has. I think they love their tradition, I can´t explain. You compare this 2 knifes, but I think the Hultafors OK4 would be the better choice in that budget cause I got all the knifes too. So my friend, keep rollin with your vids and I hope that you and your family stay healthy. Sharp greetings from Rob.

Thanks Aaron. The Mora stainless Companion seems like a more direct comparison point to me. It's about the same size of handle as the Finn Hawk and it's stainless, which is one of the big advantages of the Finn Hawk's 4116 steel. The Mora has the advantage of a thinner blade, making it a better slicing and carving tool, and it costs under $15 on Amazon, whereas the Finn Hawk is $23+ on the same platform. The Finn Hawk has a more secure sheath (and that's one of the weaknesses of the Moras), the sheath has a thumb ramp for easier deployment, the spine is already 90°, and 4116 is incredibly stainless, making it preferable in high humidity or salt water environments. The question is, are those worth the additional 50% in the price? Personally, if I'm salt water fishing, I'd say yes, but for other things, not so much.

Unfortunately you are probably correct as far as cold steel is concerned. I’ve noticed their prices sky rocketing, especially with their higher end stuff, it cost more now to buy some of cold steel’s products than an equivalent knife that’s hand made in America. I’m fairly sure the cheaper stuff will follow suit. The new owners of Cold Steel are just rap-ing the company for the highest profit possible. They are mostly good products but they aren’t worth some of the prices they are asking.

If you will allow me an observation, I believe that your cutting technique is somehow unsafe. I see you performing almost straight cuts in 90 degrees angle, with you support hand either directly below the blade, or very close, as you apply considerable force to your knife. It is a matter of a small control loss for you to slice your hand or scratch it. Never put your hand or anything you don´t want to cut in the cutting direction of your blade

umm ... According to Cold Steel (who aught to know) the Cold Steel Finn Bear has a hollow grind, not a Scandi. I have both an older Finn Bear that came with a nylon sheath, and a Carbone Mora Number 1. Of the two, the Mora gets more use, and is my primary woods/hunting fixed blade.

Mora Garberg is a better bushcraft knife. I have a regular companion for more detailed work though.

As a Scandinavian is annoying to only hear about Mora knifes !! I am from Finland and we have "Rapala" & "Puukoo" !! In Denmark go to Holstebro gruppen.dk. but be ready to pay. Norway has the "Brusetta" Have seen some articles about Scandinavian. Most of them forgot Denmark..... I collect Scandinavian knives, ever since i started as a sea-scout 😉 Have a great day 😁

Saw-backs make the best notches...PERIOD! An "all-purpose" bushcraft knife will have a blade with a straight edge that includes about 10% of a serration, and a partial saw-back on the spine.

None of these knife companies can figure out how to make a double belt clip. Left or right side carry.

those cold steel sheaths are fucking dangerous man, i had their pukka style knife the Finn bear, the sheath was ridiculous i nearly cut my finger off trying to pull the knife out.

John....you are absolutley right on this one. I have had to modify the sheaths on almost all my cold steel blades with a dremel tool. The cold steel sheaths also need to have a thumb point on ybe sheath like the mora's do. Other than that, cold steel has some pretty nice blades. I only own two cold steel knives....finn hawk and the candadian belt knife. Didn't like the Canadian belt knife at first but after using it several times I got use to it. Cleaned one deer with it and it did ok but where it really shines is a slicer. I also use it to cut rib cages out of my crappie fillets. Great fish knife.
