Well your breathing nitrogen ever sec your alive!! We used a desiccant filter to remove the water from the air and compressed it into a tank and had almost pure nitrogen (good enough) to clean up moisture in the system. That's how they charge you a crazy amount to fill your tires with nitrogen by filtering the moisture(water) out and the O2 molecule is attached to it. What's left is essentially nitrogen. Nitrogen - 78 . Oxygen - 21 . Argon - 0.93 . Carbon dioxide - 0.04

In regards to pulling a vacuum. I once worked for this A/C residential light commercial repair shop. The old guy that ran it would pull a vacuum for 8 hours. Then let it set for 24 hours. He used a low vacuum because his theory. His theory was too high of a vacuum caused turbulence and could possibly cause false readings. He never had come backs.

Paul, You should come up with a caddy to carry that nitrogen bottle or strap it to something so you don't knock it over by accident and crack or break the valve. If you do you've suddenly got a missile with 2000 lbs of thrust. That bottle is considerably lighter than my K size shop bottles and probably not as prone to break the valve if it's knocked over but the risk is still there. I've used nitrogen for years to service aircraft struts and on my smoke machine too so I own 6 K size (249 CF) bottles, 2 nitrogen, 2 oxygen, 2 argon and a couple smaller ones like the one you have. I also have an adapter setup so I can fill the smaller bottles off of the big ones. Oxygen, argon and nitrogen bottles can be used horizontally (laying on their side) but not acetylene.

Great video, I retrofitted a tire inflator pump to the low pressure side gauge/filler line and pumped 44 psi. and with soap and water found the leak at the hose crimped at the metal line. Mind you, it was passing the vacuum test because it sucked the separated rubber back on the hose. I replaced the condenser suction hoses/lines/seals. Pressure tested again at 44 psi and passed . I vacuumed the heck out of the system and passed. Recharged the system with R134A and some pag oil. Checked for any leaks and passed. AC blowing cold for 2 weeks. Thanks for the video 🙏

Good show. One point i believe in is that a system can hold vacuum indefinitely with no signs of a leak, how ever when the system is under pressure and heat during use a substantial leak can occur. Your method of using "bone dry" Nitrogen is the spot on way to test.

Some fire retardants can be very corrosive to metals if not cleaned off. That was a great move checking other condenser for leak. Nothing wrong with adjustable wrenches. I used N often. Carried a bottle in my service truck. On old tractors the hard lines would rust and start to leak. 1/2 the time the N would blow the line completely out on certain models. Made it really easy to find. Scared the crap out of the customers every time. It was worth not warning them if they were standing in a safe spot. I must be getting old. I worked in the HVAC field, big commercial stuff, 50 ton units. I always charged to 200 psi for a leak check. Could hear even a pin hole leak. And we used Cresent wrenches all of the time. It’s too heavy carrying all of those open end wrenches onto the roof. Oh, we also used compressed CO2 for the leak checks. It gets just as humid in Detroit as it does in Pittsburgh and we never had moisture problems.

Love your videos. I learn so much from you. I will remember that hot water trick the next time I do this. I like to charge high side as a liquid after pulling the deep vacuum with the car off of course. Let the vacuum in the empty system pull as much liquid refrigerant as I can get into the high side. The hot water on the can may increase how much liquid I can get in during this stage. I wouldn't go into the low as a liquid unless it was an accumulator design with an orfice tube like GM uses. There you are just dumping into the accumulator. But most decent cars don't use such a design so I can't charge liquid low side safely. After getting all the liquid I can into the high side with the motor off I then switch to low side car running as a vapor.

One thing I was taught is to run the vehicle while vacuuming the a/c system. Water boils at 70-80° under vacuum. Some of the flush chemicals boil at 400° at atmosphere. If the system is at 220°, there can't be any moisture inside the a/c system. Also turning the compressor on its nose with oil in it will lubricate the front seal, after sitting on a shelf the seal can be dry. Rarely have a comeback.

the newer "non-mineral" oils (poe/pag) are far more hygroscopic and will mix with moisture, in comparison to old mineral oils which wouldn't mix with water. they've modified the oils to be less hygroscopic, but still they'll just carry the schmutz around the system while it eats itself.

Oh man, that's my luck right there - right at the end of a A/C job, and now we have to troubleshoot ignition or crank sensor failure! Always fun explaining that to a customer ... and it's usually the new customer that just got ripped off from the guy down the road, too. That sucks about that 4 month old condenser you had kicking around for years. I wonder if that fire extinguisher material is corrosive - it may have become so in the presence of moisture. Not sure. I always though it was, but can't recall where I heard that. More useful comment tips for you: Get yourself a bottle of Nylog for o-rings - that stuff is AWESOME. We call it liquid snot, because it's super tacky / sticky. :D I had an o-ring coated with Nylog on a incorrect accumulator for my '93 Volvo 940, and it held pressure for a WEEK! There was ZERO tension on the o-ring! I could pull the aluminum line in and out of the fitting 3/8 of an inch! That's how awesome that stuff is. I did have to mourn the loss of my R12, though - that was painful. I think there's a few different kinds of Nylog IF I remember right - I got the BLUE lettering on the bottle. I've had the same bottle for 6 years, and I've done 20+ complete overhauls in that time. Great stuff as usual Paul and Caleb - you guys always make me laugh! I needed it today - I've got a migrane from a '12 Silverado with an EVAP SMALL LEAK!!! GRRRR!! All I can smell now is baby oil from my home built smoke machine in a paint can, HAHAHA!

Another great video. I just ordered the valve for the nitrogen tank. My fiancé's dad had a 40 cu/ft tank of Argon that still feels like it has quite a bit in it that he gave me today. The only issue is that the tank is fairly old so it would have to be tested before it could be used as a trade in because the date is expired. The AC in my 92 Cavalier recently quit so I need to find the leak as it's not that obvious. The compressor and hoses are fairly new and don't appear to be leaking though some of the hose connections at the drier look kind of oily.
@Mr2004MCSS
@Mr2004MCSS 3 жыл бұрын
I worked on the AC on my 92 Cavalier the other day and could not find a leak anywhere on all of the connections and components I could access. I couldn't get to the evaporator behind the dash. I used Dawn dish soap and water in a spray bottle. The system still had about 15 psi in it and this was from the repair I did in August of 2019 when I replaced the lines from the compressor to the condenser and accumulator. I used the Argon tank and regulator to pressurize the system to 200 psi and let it sit for over an hour without the needle dropping at all. I then vacuumed down the system for 30 minutes and then let that sit for 30 minutes with no loss of pressure. It must be a very small leak. I still have a large tank of R12 so I recharged it to specs and it blows nice and cold. I did discover that my blower mower had quit so I had to replace it to get everything working correctly. I guess I need to get an AC sniffer to put up the drain to see if I can detect a leak at the evaporator.

If you look at where these condensers leak are usually where the batteries are. It takes just a little acid from the battery either from the inside of the battery or someone cleaning the terminals, and placing the wire brush right over the area where the leak happened. because the acid powder that got cleaned off the terminals fell or got deflected off the brush and made its way to the area where you found the leak. This happen to me. A little moisture will accelerate that corrosion.

I would put system under full vacuum then do the bleed down test right away and if it passes, I would continue to vacuum system ( valves open), if it didn't pass I wouldn't waist that 45 -50 mins vacuuming a leaky system (this took a few leaky systems to learn this). I would start the engine and close the hood down to raise under hood temps to help boil any moisture in the A/C system out. Under vacuum moisture boils out at ambient temps, raise the system (under hood) temps the moisture better.

When using nitrogen for leak detection, i use the pressure regulator for adjusting test pressure, and keep all valves open exept the one in the bottle. Now if there is a leak, the bottle pressure gauge will fall down before other gauges will show any movement. Volume between regulator and bottle valve is so small that pressure in there drops if there`s even small flow in to the ac-system. Because sensivity, you have to let the pressure stabilize for a moment after flow is stopped before closing bottle valve. Regulator quality may cause some variation, testing will tell how it works.

If you put the Freon on the center hose before you release the nitrogen out the Freon on the yellow hose and after the nitrogen is done start the Freon and purge a little Freon through the hose. Not a lot just to keep air out. Just a suggestion.

I own a residential appliance company. My recommendation on pressure to leak check should be based on what the low side can handle..., it does not get that full 300 psi from the high side after shut down, it "averages out" and you get closer to 150 psi or less. The aluminum braze connections to copper are not designed to handle that much pressure. I've seen them blow apart an evaporator putting in too much pressure. That's also part of the reason why your low side guage doesn't go that high and would get destroyed if you put too high a pressure through it. 100 pai is plenty to pressure check. I used injected dye and a little refrigerant when I did commercial refrigeration and found the leak with a special light.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner Жыл бұрын
For sure, I need to be careful with these pressures. And I agree that the EVAP won't see 300, but I can see it hitting 150-200 on a 110 degree day when parked on the hot pavement in Arizona with your windows up. What do you think the in car temp would be? Then how hot is the pavement and is the engine hot or not. I really feel like 200 wouldn't do damage. Thoughts? My other thought is I've seen many EVAP cores and they are constructed not much differently than the condenser and the condenser can certainly handle that pressure
@robhill8894
@robhill8894 Жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner The evaporator is usually made out of aluminum. The condenser usually made out of steel. I use 100 to 150 psi max and is plenty to do the job. Also, as he mentioned, and confirming what I said, the higher pressure damaged his low side guage.

You lit me right up on your DIY rant about 16 minutes in. I can't touch R134 in the shop, as a technician, in Wisconsin, without 609 Certification. Yet anybody can go to a parts store in Wisconsin and buy a can of future problems with a spash of R134 and leak half of it out into the atmosphere when they try to figure out how to fill it in the parking lot. Then let the other half leak out of their AC system normally for the summer.

@@stuzman52 I'm actually good to go. As a matter of fact, I had to update my 609 cert all over again after they came out with R1234YF. I'd love to see R1234 sold at parts stores these days. Paul, I wouldn't trust that check valve when you break vacuum or when you switch cans. The hot setup for that is a ball valve on the end of your yellow hose. When you break the vacuum that check valve will allow air to suck in. Also when you switch cans the ball valve is your friend. On the purge of air you did when you switched cans, you need to purge at the adapter fitting for the can not at the manifold. That purge you did did not get the air out from that can adapter. Last thing, you need to weigh your cans on a food scale before and after to total up the charge going into the system. If you do it right, you can get a more accurate charge than a commercial machine.

@3:09 What I can't understand about those concerns on pressurizing w/air of empty system is the following: If the AC system is empty due to a leak, the air is in the system anyway, so adding more shouldn't matter. Especially, if we vacuum out moisture after that w/vacuum pump.

Maybe you guys can use some of those nitrogen for your tires. Nitrogen molecule is larger and cooler than oxygen so it doesn't leak out easily and is good for long drives and prevents tire heating.

Be glad there are no motor windings with electrical going through it. You have acids that would burn out new compressor. I'm a retired hvac instructor plus 33 years in field how's the KZbin bud sorry? You helped me out a lot and with my 97 k 1500 . Hell with the old refrigerant pressures were getting pricey for a while would check for leak. With a budget a cool tool is a amprobe brand ultrasonic leak detector you can also buy emitter for inside car for finding leaks when driver hears a window etc. To much press for just hoses will leak you find auto hoses as well an manifold gauges. So you got a unfound I'm leak ch hoses by putting high visibility hvac soap in hand and run down all hoses. Hell i put a direct drop in a electricians car new refrigerant I think 404a.automotive systems have variable speed compressors. Most new compressors in auto also use aluminum in the compromise case BLOW BACK BOTH WAYS WITH THE NITROGEN REMOVINNG METERING DEVICE AND POP IT WITH A GLOVE OR RAG. STOP LEAK STOPS UP METERING DEVICES. HELL YOUT RIGHT ON MOST OF INTELLIGECE ON WEB HOLLER IF YOU HAVE A GREAT DAY. HAVE TO SAY SEEN MECHANICS PRESSURIZE UP A OLD FREON JUG FOR A AIR TANK HOWEVER AIR TANKS COME WITH COATINGS INSIDE CHANCES BEING IRONY IT R WOULD EXPLODE ON ME WATER IN COMPRESSED AIR IN HURRY

Leak creates bubbles & as bubbles pop you can hear the popping like "tick tick".
