I’m glad I’m not the only one wondering why most animated features of the 80s were so overtly grim in both themes and colour pallets in comparison to what we got in the 90s. Not that there weren’t traumatic moments in those films, *cough* Mufasa’s death *cough* 90% of “Hunchback” *cough* but they felt more balanced in how more disturbing themes were handled. Maybe it was because the animation industry in America seemed to be in such a dire state that it leaked into the films themselves? Or Don Bluth’s storytelling tropes seemed to touch upon a mood that kids of that era resonated with? I honestly don’t know, and I grew up with and loved Bluth’s earlier films. Makes you wonder how modern kids would react to those films...probably not well.
@LaoonCow
@LaoonCow 3 жыл бұрын
I think that the 80s was an experimental time where they tried to make stories more realistic and expressions like. It would explain a lot about why the movies back then were so grim.
@aaronfletcher8745
@aaronfletcher8745 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm in my early teens and I love the animated films of the 80s, especially Bluth. I can't really speak for most young kids, though I did grow up on The Land Before Time, The Fox and the Hound, and the like, because I really couldn't get emotionally invested for some reason. So I was just entertained, not saddened or scared. Now, on the other hand, I do feel those emotions now, upon rewatching them. If I were to guess about how modern kids would react, I'd say that they'd probably eat it right up. Kid's entertainment (specifically TV animation) nowadays is often a bit dark and depressing (see Infinity Train).

My little guy watched Land Before Time over and over again when he was like 2 and 3. I honestly forgot how traumatizing it was. The first time we watched it together I sobbed and sobbed. The music from my own childhood did something strange to me. I regret showing him those kinds of movies, along with Finding Dory and Finding Nemo. Too upsetting and disturbing for such young kids. I prefer he watch gentler entertainment like Little Bear, Kipper, and Winne the Pooh the TV series (the movie Pooh's Grand Adventure was another one that was way too sad and depressing for young kids imo)

@@100lovenana EXACTLY. I've always had to side eye and very gradually distance myself away from those people who can honestly look at a piece of media with an obvious, despicable villain...and they roll their eyes at how they're being portrayed, or jump through hoops to justify their unjustifiable behavior. Or they just get flat out mad and nasty and start stomping around and tell you to CUT THAT OFF or CHANGE IT! I TOLD YOU TO CHANGE THAT (insert butthurt name calling about the "weak" characters suffering the villains wrath here). They can't stand that the majority of the world views their worldview as completely effed up, so they paint the actual victims and the virtue signalers, weak, or just stupid, and they hate it when they win in the end. Cue a three-hour talk about the person ranting about the movie, and how the good characters are "weak", and self righteous, and the bad characters are just "misunderstood." If not that, expect some of them to compare their lives to a fictional victim, and try and make it so that you forget all about the story, and dote on them instead. And you can guarantee their own victim story is made up, or sprinkled with half truths. Anything to get the attention off the movie with a portrayed real victim. It doesn't even have to be fictional, it could be a documentary, or a story in the news. I know the characters in media are fictional, but I don't want to be around people who honestly sees nothing wrong with certain inhumane traits.

You've got an abducted orphan child being used for dangerous labor in the demands of a gator owning psychopath with a shotgun. Not only that, but she almost drowns several times, has risk of getting eaten, gets threatened and emotionally manipulated by the adults. I wouldn't be surprised if she had to go to therapy after all that.

The Rescuers is my favorite Disney film from after Walt's passing and before the Disney Renaissance started. My favorite scene is the organ scene, when Bernard and Bianca hide in the pipes of an old organ and one alligator plays the organ while the other tries to grab them as they come flying out of the pipes. It combines genuine threat and genuine comedy perfectly, and that's one of the hardest combinations to pull off! The crowning jewel of the scene is when Medusa, disturbed by the wild, random organ playing, comes raging into the room. Instead of assuming what anyone else would, and shouting "Penny!" or even "Snoops!" she immediately knows that it was Brutus and Nero, meaning they had done this sort of thing before!

Today, I really like The Rescuers. The characters are memorable, the story is very good and the themes are dark and deep for a kids film teaching them about abandonment, child neglect, faith, bravery and true act of heroism. The sequel is good, too. I also recommend a TV series called Chip n' Dale: rescue rangers. It's not related, but it's a bit similar on being adventurous and heroic. Great video ☺

Using a new character with some Cruella elements instead of Cruella herself gave the creators way more creative freedom to work with her. Cruella was way more aggressive, but Medusa does have more of a manipulative side and can feign some charm. Being good with a gun, having pets that she seems to love and enjoying life in a boat in the middle of the swamp (which the high-class loving British designer would probably very not enjoy) are also distinguishing traits. Medusa also appears to be poorer than Cruella, owning a run-down pawn shop instead of being a famous designer. Cruella wouldn't need to get rich, she already is. They did everything right with this character and I commend them for it.

To be honest I was puzzled when both Luke and Evinrude drink moonshine and breathe fire; thought this was a reconstituent draught and not strong drink. This film was also my gateway into Southern Gothic...

Here's some neat facts about this movie and the books it was based on! Expanding on what you mentioned, in the original novel of the same name by Margery Sharp, Bernard and Bianca have to rescue a Norwegian poet from a place called the Black Castle, a terrible prison. Bianca actually wasn't a part of the Prisoner's Aid Society at that point, Bernard was, and he was sent to ask for her help due to her owner being the son of a diplomat (I believe, it's been a while) with the ability to travel to faraway places. In conjunction with the discussion of this video, the book was described ON THE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET as being a "lighthearted fantasy" for children... parts of it, however, are quite dark. The poet's message is written in blood, reading: "Will I ever see Norway again..." Not to mention Miss Bianca herself is nearly killed several times. The description of the prison is also quite upsetting... a bleak place, indeed. Funnily enough, the movie more accurately adapts the second book in the series, called simply Miss Bianca, where Bianca and a team of other female mice join forces to rescue a young child named Patience (no doubt where the name Penny came from in the movie!) from a quartz prison called the Crystal Palace, if I'm remembering correctly. Actually, the Prisoner's Aid Society weren't very interested in the idea of rescuing Patience, since children didn't really excite them as much as say, a trapped hero, hence why a team of mother mice were sent, who were more emotionally attached to the cause. Her tyrannical keeper, the Countess (though of what, even the main characters are unsure) used Patience as a maid and barely fed her at all, the girl was described as "painfully thin". She's eventually rescued by the mice and brought to live with a nice couple. However, what's interesting about Patience's plight is that the Crystal Palace is in the middle of the city, not isolated like the bayou. Anyone and everyone can see that she needs help through the semi-translucent prison walls... but no one even tries. Another terrifying fun fact: The Countess had several clockwork maids built who could only say, "as her grace pleases"! Yep, that book was a rollercoaster, all right. Some of the imagery was downright insane, but I love it for that.

This movie and a few others were in my top *most favourites* back in the 80s. I was young and loved dark tones and the type of "I'm a survivor, not a victim" themes. It was quite refreshing to see little mice helping a human and not the other way around. Now that I am older and I'm petite. I always remember this one movie; that because I'm short I should never limit myself nor undervalue myself in any way. My best friend also loves this movie very much! Thank you Drawpinion Dump for your take on the movie! Keep them coming!

Cute and terrifying is the perfect way to describe this movie! The mice and other good animals were cute,and so is Penny,but what was happening to her was not! All the comedy they tried while we were hanging out with her didn't work so well! I was like "Ha ha ha! You are a little girl in a kidnapping situation where you are forced to go into a watery hole for a giant shiny rock!”

I remembered this movie from when I was younger and I loved it. I just rewatched it again today after not seeing it for a few years, and now I regret it. So much seemed depressing and bleak to me and the villainess was so horrifying. After seeing her I was just terrified throughout the rest of the film, like just h o w and w h y . It felt like I was looking into the depths of the underworld, I know this sounds dramatic but she was so horrifying to me in every way, and I felt so depressed looking at the film.

I always loved that movie too. Still do. Now as an adult I can oly wonder just how traumatized for life poor Penny must have be. And Bernhard and Bianca are such great characters, especially in the way they complement each other. And they are mice, which gives them extra points for me. I totally love those little creature and have them as pets since decades. I like the sequel too, it has such interesting characters. (and can't tell how much I like Bernhard facing his fear and scare the boar. But in the sum I always liked the first one Rescuers movie a little more.

I know this video is kinda old now but I wanted to comment that this Disney film is based off of some cool books published in the 1950s about Miss Bianca who works in a prisoners aid society and I think it’s sad nobody ever seems to know or mention this. They’re quite hard to get a hold of now but I own one and it’s eloquently written and beautifully illustrated

It's amazing how well it did considering what it was up against: Star Wars (which was *still* going strong even though it had been released in late May), The Spy Who Loved Me, A Bridge Too Far, Smokey and The Bandit, Saturday Night Fever, Annie Hall, Oh God!, etc. I kind of wish that you'd talked a bit about the music. Remember, "Someone's Waiting for You" was nominated for a Best Song Oscar (but lost out to that dreadful Debbie Boone glurge-fest "You Light Up My Life"), and Artie Butler's somewhat eccentric background cues that drew influences from everywhere from 1940s-ish Tom-and-Jerry to Mariachi -- sometimes within the same few bars!

I feel one f the big strenghts this films has over the sequal is the rescuers themselves. In the sequal sure the outback is huge but everyone seems to know where the baddies hideout is they are just getting carried there. In this film they have very little to go on but small clues yet they are the ones who find AND save the girl and they do it together.

Total side note but I would almost swear that movies that are like this and any kid friendly films with child abuse and abandonment are there for kids who are actually experiencing it, to be able to escape on an adventure filled with people and animals who care about them and get a happy ending. Matilda, All Dogs Go to Heaven. The Rescuers and The Little Princes were movies I related to. Now in adulthood I realize why. So if by some off chance that this is the case, thank you to the creators who made these stories. They helped me get through the childhood in which I knew something was wrong, but because it's rare for your abuser to be as obviously cartoonishly evil, it helped me come to terms with it and to see that the madness I lived in wasn't normal even if it was hyperbolic version in the movies. Noticing commonalities was part of the key that helped me realize what I in.
