This movie lost me when the remote started acting on its own. That was a dumb decision on the writer’s part because it took away the responsibility of Michael coming to terms with the consequences of his action. The movie should’ve been more gradual and had Michael, as you said, continuously fast forward to the good stuff only to have another tragedy waiting for him. Then in his later years when he rewinds to see all the stuff he’s missed, the finale gut punch is the last moment with his father. It’s obvious that this idea was way too ambitious for Adam Sandler, which is is why the execution feels half cooked. Big Joel made a video discussing how all the pit falls ruined the message of Click.

It would've been much more difficult for the movie's premise and message to succeed taking those kinds of liberties. The other feasible options were drastically reducing the scale/stakes, making Michael much less sympathetic, or otherwise becoming impotent/implausible in some other way. It'd be harder to justify him ending up disconnecting from his loved ones for decades. The movie's solution works in a sense, the remote taking further control also decently represents how our actions become lifelong habits.

I do mostly agree with what you are saying, but I personally still like the ending we got compared to ending it with him confronting his dad. Him seeing his kids move away while he is stuck on his death bed, is more of an impact to Michael life, because he loves his kids of course, probably more than his dad. Also for most people I came across that last scence was the best part of the movie. Also if the remote control is not broken, then wants stopping him from rewinding back to where his life left off at any point in time.

it was only acting on his own because Michael constantly did that. Eventually it was acting on default based on HIS choices

While this Is one of Adam's better post-2000 movies, the point where the Remote starts to Auto Fast Forward also lost me. If the idea the Michael wanted to skip the boring things in life was somehow committed to the Remote's memory and then it started skipping without his knowledge, that would have made sense. Instead, it comes across as an arbitrary Plot Complication.

Sandler is like that one kid in the family that has so much potential yet is content with the status quo due to his own laziness.
@PrincessFelicie
@PrincessFelicie 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say laziness. Because first off laziness is an ableist (if you know you know) concept that doesn't really translate to anything concrete. Anything that "doesn't do a thing" is flagged as lazy with little regard for the underlying reasons. In the case of Sandler, I would attribute it more to his privilege, both social and class. He's a well off hetero cis white dude with christian nuclear family ideals and desires, and that gives him a critical lack of perspective he has never sought to correct.

He needs time to work on a project, so why not pause the world to think? Give hismelf time to collect his ideas, relax for a minute, take a break form tasks that require more from him than he even has available to give?

I’ll say without doubt I did cry at that ‘last memory’ scene. It hits so hard and they did it so well. I loved it as a kid and I still love it now even with the “Its an Adam Sandler” joke. The movie Click has the same premise as an episode of the Adventures in the Book of Virtue where this little boy is given a magic ball of yarn by a witch and he learns the same lesson. It's funny cause when I saw the movie as a kid I immediately thought that Adam Sandler had to have watched that episode and made a feature length movie based on it.

I can not find anything on this, but I think Click was based off a children's book from the late 90s to early 2000s. In elementary school I had a teacher who bought lots of kid's books, and told us which ones would be made into movies. He was right with nearly all of them, but I think two didn't happen. I can't remember the books too well, but I do remember these that did become movies. The books he predicted are: -The book that was based on click. -How to eat fried worms -mr poppers penguins (Remake) Now I can't find the book, but I do remember a good chuck about the story, and how much it kinda messed me up, and how much I think about it when click is talked about. Not only that, but the book i read years ago, then seeing Click when it released . As a kid I was like, "Um...The book my teacher owned and shared with us was way better, and it's sad I like a 30 page book, then a full movie." The book went like this: (This is going to be long but I will do my best to abridge it.) The book starts off with a kid mad that he has to go to school, do homework, and never having any fun. Then one day a old man sees him asking why he looks so down. The kid tells the old man about his troubles, and the old man gives him a item (I do not remember what it was so sorry about that.), which helps him move forward in time. He tells the kid not to use it too much or something bad might happen, since he is only to use the item a little at a time. And he dose what any kid would do when given this much power, which is skip everything they don't like. Homework gets a skip. Getting in trouble? Skip. School? Skip but makes sure he can play for recess. Oh he is sick? Then a skip to the point where he is better. And so forth. Then something happens when he thinks to use the item a bit longer then normal, and once he back he is a adult. Not only that, but he is told by the old man what happened to him, and his life now, because he used the item to solve all his problems, and the results they lead to. The kid dropped out of highschool the moment he could, got kicked out of his parents house, is with a girl the same age as him, and they have a kid together, but even if they live in a home he has to support her and there kid, because she has tried, and now is too sick to do much of anything until she gets better. From there it just dark. The kid might have a adult body, but is mentally is still a kid with no way of making it as a adult or rising a family. The only job he can get is stock clerks in a supermarket, but that might not last long, since he keeps messing up, because he can't read words on the cans, puts them where ever, and gets lower and lower pay because of it. The pay gets so low they wonder how they are going to eat, and even how they are going to pay for the house. and then he thinks to use the item to help his girlfriend since he used to use it for himself when ever he got sick, but it backfires. So much so that his girlfriend's illness gets worse to the point he can't pay for better medicine for her, and soon his kid becomes sick as well, and he wonders what he can do to stop this. The item just makes things worse, and there is no way out of this, and he can't help anyone. Once he is alone the kid yells out, that he wishes he can go back to school, and start over again. Afterwards the old man comes back revealing, that he is in fact a wizard, and better yet can take the child back in time so he can go to school. The story ends with him happy he has a second chance at life, and is going to study as hard as he can so he can never be in that situation ever again. I get that the message of the book was to show how important school was as well as a education. But I am sorry the ending part of the story, where the kid is just a adult who can't help his family, is in a bad situation, and the more he tries to help the worse it gets for everyone around him. Plus the thing that always confused me as a kid was this, Why did a woman...End up with a guy who was mentally a child who can't read? There is just so much to unpack with that book I read only 2 times, when I was 12 I swear! And because of that, "Click" can never hold up to the book from years ago. It could be because a kid who had to grow up too fast, and can't do anything to fix there situation is a more scary story, then a adult who is slowly losing his family to the point of them being strangers. And that is why I wish. wish. That book was made into a movie since it held no punches.

The gross humor and the blatant emotional manipulation to make you think the movie is deeper really bothered me. This was such a odd film. It was half run of the mill Adam Sandler movie and half something deeper and sad, and even interesting. It's one of the tonally inconstant films I ever seen. Adam Sandler is pretty inconstant too, though. He can be great in offbeat dramas like "Punch Drunk Love" or "Uncut Gems", but he's also his own worst enemy, not even updating his own brand of comedy like other comedians have to fit in with smarter trends these days. His films have been keeping that 90s type of comedy alive for 25 years past it's prime already, and there's also the age problem. Watching a 20 something Sandler do this is fun. Watching a 50 something Sandler do this is depressing. Like when Jim Carrey did "Sonic" last year, and he did basically 90s Carrey, that was fun because it was a throw back, but he's also evolved so much in the time in-between, that we smile at the throw back instead of groan he never left it.

The idea that an important life lesson came from a low-brow stupid Adam Sandler movie is absurd. But that doesn't take away from the fact that you did learn a lesson from it and how important that lesson was to your life. I think the only thing I dislike about Click is the ending, shoulda been a dark ending. Also I *really* think people underestimate how well mixing expectations works, if you expect a horror, you brace for it, but if you expect a comedy and get a horror, you're shook. You were vulnerable and it went straight for your throat. I *loooooove* that, it's why I love Gravity Falls and Secret of NIMH and Sonic the Hedgehog (the cartoon) Click is still my favorite Adam Sandler movie, but it's also the *last* Adam Sandler movie I watched, aunno I guess I grew out of those movies or something? I think he's *really* overhated and at worst, his movies are schlock. The again I haven't watched Billy Madison in a decade or so, Waterboy wile I still quote it, I've never watched it since it was new. Aunno how cringy it is anymore. Tho i guess I watched Big Daddy the other month and it's still good. Not great, I mean I've seen better comedies, but eh. I guess I can't think of a single '90s movie that doesn't make me cringe.

I DO reccomend Click. I had a great time watching it. Humour is subjective. I don't like every Adam Sandler movie, but a few of them and here I laughed quite a bit. :)

My dad used to look similar to Adam Sandler when he was younger (he and my mom used to love his movies them because of that) so I've always hated to see most of his movies (and also my shitty parents lol). This is one of the few movies I watched with my dad and I hated the fact that he related too much to it. He started crying during the second half and in a way I felt a bit of pity towards him and later I cringed because I remembered it was an Adam Sandler questionable movie character he was relating to! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'd certainly use such a remote during traffic jams if I don't have anything to keep myself entertained during such tedious times.

My favourite scene/element in this film is the son Ben losing weight as a teen/growing up thanks to his new stepdad Bill. It makes me think that if my divorced mum dated a health nut nice guy I would find it easier to burn calories than what I do already swimming and doing aquagym...

I remember the scene with his boss. It’s a dumb but funny comedy if you don’t think too much about it.

This movie had a great idea, but because it was made by Adam Sandler it was executed horribly If this movie was made by someone like Jim Carrey and his team, it could have been Oscar worthy

This movie came out a year after Son of the Mask, which shows how terrible a movie becomes if you take Jim Carrey out of it

I honestly dislike his movies for the points u mentioned early in the vid but also because his movies feel like a boomer wrote a self insert fanfic, never revised or showed sensitivity readers and then invited all his rich friends to be other characters. Like terrible DnD Also, for the first 5 min of this video I honestly thought you were talking about bedtime stories. I thought there was a remote in bedtime stories and knew click "also" had a remote. Either that speaks to the forgettability of his movies or the severe overlap in cliches and story flow... Or maybe my memory's terrible lol
What happened to those Polly Pocket movies?
