Scaring scorpions makes them more venomous

Although they look all A-team tough on the exterior with armour-plating and a don’t mess with me stinging tail, scorpions can actually be a bunch of scaredy cats. But don’t take this as a weakness because the scarder (yes that is a word, Google said so…) they are, the more potent their venom becomes. No-one has been able to show this in any other venomous animal.
Here’s how it all goes down (or up in this case..) Scorpions have two components to their venom. One for using in defence against furry animals with sharp teeth such as small marsupials and mice who like to eat scorpions and the other to capture prey such as crickets and spiders.
What researches found was that when the scorpion was regularly exposed to predators i.e the highly frightening frankenmouse, the amount of venom for defence increased and the venom for capturing prey decreased.
Which makes perfect sense, you need to try and give anything that is going to eat you as much whoop-ass as possible which comes in the form of a deadly tail fashioned with a venomous sting.
What is even more amazing is that they can do this within 4 weeks! If a venomous snake tried to pull that off, it would take them generations, which makes it super cool for a scorpion to be a super scary cat. The key message here… embrace your vulnerable side it could give you super powers. Don’t take our word for it, check out the video.

And this is an exact example of why my zoology professor says basic research is necessary because it can be used in applied research. Any normal person might ask "Why do we need to know this shit? I'm not going around scaring scorpions." Then, by the end of the video, "Oh, we can fluoresce cancer cells and find them in the body." No way would I have ever come up with that idea.

+Jamie Seymour He's referencing Monty Python, meaning of life. Unfortunately I am nerdy enough to know that. Some silly questions from an academic here! For the analysis of the venom, what kind of detector do you have hooked up to your LC? Did you do MS/MS ID to confirm the identity of the venom as well or did you rely upon something like UV absorbance pattern with a reference standard? I'm not a biologist myself (toxicology/pharmacology here working in drug development) so am super interested in the characterisation of the venoms and their exact composition. Do you have a published paper available on this so I can take a squiz at the methods/results?

in my opinion that is a baby scorpion the smaller they are the more potent only because they are not able to control there venom

that was an adult scorpion. while it's true younger scorpions don't have good control of the venom they inject, its the smaller species that tend to produce deadlier neurotoxin.

Great video! I wonder how the prey venom profile changed over this period. If the scorpions were getting regularly timed, pre-dead meals over those eight weeks, would you expect their prey venom proteins go down? Could you test that by giving them live meals at irregular time intervals (for 4 wks) tested against pre-dead meals at regular intervals (for 4 wks)?

Having grown up in the most callous times of animal-experimentation I was deeply to see the Doc let that scorpion go in the end. I'm pretty sure that was just for show but liked it anyway. Because maybe it's not. One CAN expect good things from a guy actually using a machine that goes "bing"!

bioluminescent tumors would have great applications in the world of Neurofibromatisis research. Apart from having my 6yr old scanned by mri every 3 months to monitor his multiple tumors, we could just run a black light over him. Is the venom specific to certain tumors when it attaches? It's something I'm keen to follow. Great work on the videos and channel, great to hear a Aussie while I'm in the U.S.

For those of you freaking out, scorpions are more likely to run and hide than to sting you. Mine is the size of my fist, but he's a little scaredy boy and has never stung me. He's a Heterometrus Longimanus species, so his sting is about as bad as a hornet.
