Wonderful performance of the master pianist, who was the most important student of Rubinstein himself!

Fabulous. Somewhat abridged version. Authentic, from the horses mouth. Welcome to the 19th century.

This was the last time the New York Philharmonic played this piece, which Hofmann first played with them in 1905 and several times after.

Nowhere near as much musical depth as Anton Rubinstein’s 4th, which influenced the Tchaikovsky concerti and Rachmaninoff’s Third, but this piece is still charming, and sounds like great fun too! Hofmann must have liked this piece enough too.

I believe, J.Hoffman became youngest, then he's played Anton Rubinstein's, his Famous Teacher's Music!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Beautiful playing. The notes just glide from his hands. I can see though how this is not as popular as the 4th.

A delight to hear Hoffman, live, in a complete performance of such large-scale work. However, alas, there's a reason this piece isn't played very often...

You can tell that recorded sound had advanced, was more realistic in 1944 than, say, the 1937 Golden Jubilee Concert. So it is enlightening to get a better idea of Hofmann's piano sound. Also Rachmaninoff had said that given the right circumstances, Hofmann in the 40's could play as well as ever. That said, I like the Rubinstein 4th concerto much better than the 3rd.

Yes, for 4th concerto and 1937 is better than 40s' do you agree?

He sounds tired - soon to retire, yes? But he still had "it"!
