SCARY BLACK BEAR PASS RECOVERY.

Heart pounding Black Bear Pass recovery. This is one of Colorados most dangerous trail. Add in a recovery and it is a downright terrifying experience especially for Anil in his broke jeep, on power steering, no power brakes, and no power at all, then add in a narrow shelf road with its tight switchbacks with 1000' drops and you have a very scary scenario. This was probably one of the most intense 4 x 4 recovery I have ever been unloved in.

Great job guys!!! Next time (hopefully there never will be!), it might help if the broken rig uses the e-brake to lock the rear tires as the front slides, and to turn the wheels, strap the opposite side knuckle when pulling rather than the bumper.
@redrockoverland

+Adventure FreakZ He was using the e-brake. If we are ever in this situation again we will try using the knuckle 👍

Nice work by all, especially by the Toyotas…as much as I probably shouldn’t ask, for sure want to know what inside a Jeep engine can make a hole in the oil pan. Do Jeeps throw rods? That’s going to be a hefty repair bill. Would dig making a run back to Black Bear this spring/summer. Thanks for the video.

Never done this trail, want to but I have to ask, did anyone have fluids, plugs, code reader etc. to troubleshoot? We have denture fix (yup for teeth) JB Weld etc, all that stuff that will seal a leak on anything. Enough to get you off the trail. Hoses, wires, extra fuses are all a toolbox requirement. Jeep, FJ, 4Runner, it doesn't matter. The only thing we don't have is an extra drive shaft! :) Sick recovery and fantastic teamwork folks!

I wonder if airing up the front tires would've made steering easier, and skidding it around the turns easier?

It probably would have helped, but in the moment we didn't think about it.

@@redrockoverland I totally get that. It was a learning experience for me watching. The other thing that crossed my mind was shortening the tow strap on the red toyota so it was really short for just the switch backs. Like 6' short, then you might not have had to winch from the white toyota, since you'd be able to pull corner to corner to really yank the front end of the jeep around. I'm also curious of the dead jeep still had the front axle engaged. That would make it more difficult as well to have the handbrake hold. I'm not picking on you in any way, just thinking out loud. I'm by no means an expert.
@vicferrari9380
@vicferrari9380 9 ай бұрын
If you run that strap thru the front of the front wheel and drag it around the corner it acts kind of like a front dig. And don't worry your not going to pull the wheel off.

If you have so much tire on a vehicle that you can't turn the steering wheel without power steering, then you have too much tire. Also, rooftop tents should only be on a vehicle when you're absolutely going to use them. The 200-250lbs on your roof on a trail like this are not your friend.
@redrockoverland
@redrockoverland Жыл бұрын
This was on a 10 day trip he absolutely used the tent. Tires turned fine when moving just not when he was stationary.
