Confused? LONG STORY SHORT:
My name is Jess! I had a daughter (Lilia) at age 18 w/ my high school sweetheart. We mutually split up & co-parent to this day. I met someone new, got married, had twin boys (Kyson & Kaden) and another son (Landen). He cheated, we split ways, & he’s not around much. After juggling life as a single mom of 4 for some time, I met Chris, he had 2 sons: Caden and Tommy, who eventually became my step sons. After Chris and I got married, we had our 7th child together, Addelyn. We’re one big, complicated, blended family & every second of our story is on KZbin, you can start from the beginning here: • 8 Weeks Pregnant!
FAQ: Yes, we’re done having kids.
FAQ: Names and ages of the kids: Caden (step son, born in 2009), Lilia (daughter, born in 2010), Tommy (step son, born in 2010), Kyson (son, born in 2012), Kaden (son, born in 2012), Landen (son, born in 2014), Addelyn (daughter, born in 2016)
FAQ: Who are the dads? Gabe (Lilia’s dad), Drake (Kyson, Kaden, and Landen bio dad), Chris (Caden, Tommy, Addelyn’s dad)

Canadian momma here; definitely get the kids in helmets and thick gloves the next time they go skating, I was shocked to see in the video just how many kids where there without helmets (not just Jessskids) Even a bike helmet is better than nothing when it comes to the ice… not only do you want to be protected from hard falls but other people skating around you when you fall. ice and metal blades are typically a recipe for disaster. I’m glad Kaden didn’t end up getting more badly hurt.

As a Canadian when you said you were taking so many kids with no experience skating I was immediately worried. For beginners helmets are definitely recommended, also thick gloves incase a skate runs over someone's fingers (it actually happens alot). Glad no one was seriously injured. My husband has a cut over his eyebrow from his junior hockey days when he was little. Skating can definitely be a lot of fun, but it can be be dangerous if you aren't wearing proper protection, especially if you aren't a professional or frequent skater. They should have helmets on 😭 and the reason you and Lilia were having so much trouble was because your skates need to be way tighter around the ankles - a tip is to have someone else put your foot with the skate on in between their knees and have them pull as tight as possible. The tighter they are, the safer your ankles are going to be and the less they will.hurt. With loose skates, you're asking to have an ankle roll over 😩
@KarterC

So just some general ice skating safety tips for anyone who doesn’t know (I took ice skating lessons for several years: some of you may have been taught differently but these rules were non-negotiable where I was taught. This is also not shaming Jess in any way, just trying to share some tips to keep people safe). You want to wear thick gloves, not the thin ones like in the video. You’re essentially wearing blades under your feet. If you fall, someone could skate over your hand, so if you wear thicker gloves your hands are better protected than with thin ones. And also wear a beanie (preferably on the thicker side). If you happen to fall and hit your head it’ll soften the blow kind of like a helmet.

You can still get a concussion even with a helmet on. Helmets protect the skull, your brain still hits your skull which causes a concussion a helmet won’t help. I had 4 concussion in 2 years and my mom joked that I need to wear a helmet 24/7 and my doctor told us that it won’t do anything then prevent me from cracking my skull open.

Amusingly enough the biggest ice incident I've been around wasn't while skating, but while playing broomball (you play in sneakers) after hours with a youth group. I practically grew up on the ice (I joke I was skating before I was walking and it's basically true). I wasn't playing at the time but helping watch some littles (under two) and their dad (the leader of the group) just lost his feet and fell on the ice. Ended up with a nasty bruise and cracked his orbital bone but didn't have a concussion. It was crazy because there was a couple dozen people on the ice playing and it's a fairly physical game but no one was even close to him when he fell. I think the thing that got everyone the most was before they started playing his oldest was on the ice (she was only 2 1/2 at the time) and she was running and having fun and I have a picture where you can see from her shadow she had both feet off the ground. And then we ended the night with taking her dad to the hospital from a fall.

No mom shamming here. Another Canadian mom here. Played hockey growing up. The lack of helmets and gloves gave me severe anxiety. I’m glad all the kids were ok. I’m hopeful that all the comments and you addressing the lack of helmets on Instagram helps bring awareness to other moms that live in places where skating isn’t something learned soon after walking.

My mom went Ice Skating once & she said it was HORRIBLE. She fell & almost cut her 4 fingers off. She just missed the blade. She just it’s crowded & when me & my brother wanted to go she said she didnt want to because it just sucks.

Oh Jess, that lil bump was nothin'. 2 of my kids have hit there heads and ended up with CARTOONISH size "goose eggs". My daughter fell and hit her head on a marble coffee table when she was learning to walk at my in laws. Her head had a 3 inch "goose egg" and her skull ended up being fractured from her hairline down to her eye socket! As it healed she looked like she had a lightning bolt like Harry Potter!!! Lol. Her 3rd grader brothers thought she was the coolest thing ever and wanted to take her into school for show and tell!

so falls happen, they need CSA approved full caged hockey helmets for falls like Kaden had, full snow suits, if they don't know how to skate teach them to walk on the ice in skates first, gloves should be thick, use ice helpers also if the rink has any, protocol to any kid or adult hurt they need to report it, file wise
finally treating his RARE diagnosis (long-awaited surgery)
