my wife and I are empty-nesters and live in a 3,200 sq. ft. house and are getting ready to sell it so we can downsize and pay cash for the next house. People look at us like we've lost our mind because 'this is the American dream' to live in homes that are too big and to have stuff we don't need. Done with it...just give me debt-free living and we'll be as happy as ever. Good message, Buddy.

Great presentation. We had 2 bedrooms, 1 bath. When the first child came along, Mom stayed home and Dad worked. $20 bought the week's groceries . Around 1957, we got a car, because the bus schedules were cut back and Dad, of course, had to get to work. He started working at 14 to help support his family. Got high school and tech school at night. It seems to me that the economy was stable through the 19th century and first half of the 20th. I guess inflation took off in the 1970s. Going off the gold standard gave it a turbo boost.

I just want to say my grandma's family did fine during the depression because they were selling cars and there was just enough demand. "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... Fast food was a sandwich made from last night's supper. They couldn't rely on investments because of the bank industry collapse. They relied on saving money. What is the savings interest rate now? .01%? That's a slap in the face compared to what it used to be. What is the average interest rate on credit cards? 19%? How are you supposed to save money that way? Living on credit cards is killing America.

This is absolutely SPOT-ON!!!!!! I was talking to some folks just last week about how families would stay together and live in the same house like a kibitz. It saved them from homelessness and starvation. Growing our own food, focusing on sensibilities, and developing an Attitude of Gratitude is what is needed now. Today. Sunday is a good day to get with God, get to know our community, and generate some trust and hope. Thank you, Buddy. God bless

A lot of people here in the south, including my grandparents, never suffered in the depression because they couldn't lose what they didn't have in the first place! The Great Depression was something they heard of happening up there somewhere but didn't really affect them.

He didnt realize the cost of living has been unbearable for most people until he started losing the value of his own money after the pandemic shut everything down and corporations price gouged the market to make up for their losses 😂 People havent been able to pay their bills for nearly a decade. Millenials cant buy property unless they were born into a rich family. This “silent depression” is only being acknowledged now because those who were formerly well off are just now realizing that most people in America have been struggling to pay their bills after working 80 hours a week. I was blessed to have been raised by parents who grew up in the Great Depression. We lived below our means. I learned to always put away for that rainy day. I learned to grow food, cook from scratch, repurpose items. My hubby disagreed. He wanted the best for our children. Never understood why I loved to grow those veggies, or sewed or patched my clothes, & darned socks instead of just buying new. I hope I passed on some of those skills to my children, by doing what I did when they were young.

I was blessed to live next to neighbors that actually went through the depression. In rural oklahoma. Biscuits, gravy, beans, and a meat dinner once a week was high living. They bought flour, corn meal etc in 25 lb bags for a quarter and thought that was higheay robbery. Back then a trip to the creek for the kids to go swimming included fishing for dinner and crawdads were dinner too. There werent any bait stores back then, you dug your own worms etc. Grandma sewed your clothes and picked up sewing work in town. Grandpa cut f8rewood etc for a few dollars. They worked hard and didnt have a mcdonalds etc. Kids worked in the garden, milked the cow, washed the dishes, and generally did all the chores around the home so parents could work on other things. Sugar cane and sorghum and molasses were sweeteners when you didnt have honey. And folks valued honey big time. Today, sorghum and molasses are an extravagance because sugar and log cabin syrup are cheaper. I have a friend in michigan who is a maple syrup farmer. They produce their own and make goid money. About 60 dollars a gallon. Likely more now. We are very spoiled as life goes these days, medical emergencies or police, didnt include a 911 call. They handled their own troubles. That kind of can do attitude in life is what made us great. Society today is weak. Keep on Truckin Buddy. 🤝❤🇺🇸

Sounds like a modern day Native American reservation. I was unaware that modern reservation living was the same as being poor in the Great Depression, but I guess it makes sense. The dominate society is not going to fare well going forward with how easy they've had it. We Ojibwe grow our own food in gardens for the community, do not have access to 911/other government services because we are soveirgn seperate nations under the federal government and there are jurisdiction problems. We still make our own clothes. Also, the sugarbush is big on my Michigan reservation for producing maple syrup.

I totally agree. And not everyone has a garden space like we did even in the nineties. It’s hard. I have it easier than some at seventy. We had a lot of trouble from bad car accidents, lose of job, and health issues. About seven years ago, as we were struggling in our home trying to make ends meet, my son approached us about moving into their home and with their 4 boys, in a spare room to help us out. I asked him what his wife thought about it, and he said she had to talk him into the idea. Now, 8 years later or so, we are still with them, a few aggravating moments, none lasting over a day. Life is too short. My other 3 kids, help out with certain things, and of course we help out in different ways with kids, etc. my point is, more Seniors are living with their children and I’m so thankful we raised Patriotic, God fearing, kind and generous children, (along with help from our families and community). And our many thanks to our Heavenly Father for his guidance and blessings.

I'm a single father, and only made "average income" 1 year in my entire life. Almost ready to retire, making around 30K a year with 1 full time job and 2 part time jobs. One thing that my grandfather and great-grandfather taught me was that things can fall apart at any time. They were in the business of building and selling houses before the great depression ($50 down and $20 month) but lost it all during the depression. They didn't whine, cry and beg for help, just hitched up their bib overalls and found other ways. Too many spoiled, Woke brats out here now. Keep telling the truth, Buddy and steer people back to the Bible. It is the one book that should be mandatory reading, not for religion necessarily ,but for life lessons. God Bless You!!

A house worth $6,000 before the depression was worth only $3,900 by 1932. The average income in 1929 was $2,300 and fell to $1,500 by 1932. Both is a ratio of income times 2.6 equals the cost of the home. That’s the exact same income to home price ratio when I bought my home. That being said, I do work 70 hours per week. My dad and grandfather didn’t work those kind of hours…

This why the best thing I did when I turned 20 was buy a piece of land to build a ranch rather than going to college. I then started my own eBay business. Because of that everything I eat I either grow, hunt, or raise. I haven't been to the grocery store in 3 years. I haven't eaten out in 5 years. the best decision of my life. My brother and sister went to college and ended up broke, Now they work for me and are living a decent life. If I had chosen their route all 3 of us would have been broke living with our parents trying to get by. I would have hated putting that burden on my parents. My brother and sister thank me all the time for not going in the same direction they did. Now I'm trying to coach them on starting their own businesses so that I can hire college students at a lower wage so that my business can prosper and my siblings can start living an even better life on their own. Sometimes I forget to work on myself because I'm focused on helping someone else.

But we are almost out of debt (student loans and car payment) and eat like champions! My husband and I are both 24! Of course it’s not an ideal situation but where we live we don’t have a lot of options for work as of right now :/ we just budget like crazy and save up for everything we have.
