Elma, the lady who's all woman, Mo, the world-class scrum half, and Emily, the legend in the knee-high socks. You are all terrific emissaries for women's rugby. I enjoy your podcast and am looking forward to more games being broadcast so I can see more of my favorites out on the pitch.

“Yorkie Bars are not for Girls” 😊. When Mo mentioned it, it definitely brought a smile to my face, as I also remember the “Not the 9 o’clock News” parody with them running over hedgehogs and then putting a “hedgehog sticker” on the side of the truck. Not very PC but funny nonetheless.

Maybe there wasn't so much of the rugby but ohhh you are all such fun! (Just caught myself typing ladies, and I don't even normally use it. At some point in your 30s and 40s apparently you are no longer a girl though.) Loved Elma calling Mo 'Moseph' as I often use this as well i.e. "GO MOSEPH!" when Mo scored that great try in Canada. I found it quite strange as a very international rugby viewer hearing unusual voices on commentary in the men's 2019 and 2023 games. Disappointing, sometimes, too. One great thing about the NZ women's world cup was the huge positivity and passion in the voices - I liked hearing Karl Te Nana mixed in there as he was hugely enthusiastic and was a bit of a transition voice for me as I watched my first women's tournament. Your work here and the O2 video work with the Red Roses has hugely introduced me to the women's game - thank you for the love and laughs.

@Mo. I expect you already know by now, but your mum is not in the ballot if she bought her final tickets in the presale, prior to the recent ballot window opening. She has the 10 tickets, but the actual seat alloaction will be advised nearer the date 😊🌹

Yeah I got a bit panicky for a while. Then re-read all the small print. I would have had a dozen people hunting me down for the tickets I bought in the Mastercard pre-sale back in September. I believe the ballot applies to the sales that started on 5th Nov where "•A ballot system will be used for matches where the number of applications exceeds the number of tickets available." Whilst I feel for those that might lose out on the ballot - I think the idea of sell outs is absolutely fantastic

Deffo agree that Wales had the choice between dragons and leeks/daffodils and they chose plant life has always been confusing to me... I feel like the flowers were enforced by England because roses were seen as better than our counterparts offerings- we really can't contend with dragons and unicorns, i mean what have we got the bull dog 🙈

Elma, the word "lady" originates in Old English -- so before the Norman Conquest -- and it originally meant "kneader of bread". It is deeply embedded in English culture, because "Our Lady" meant the Virgin Mary, hence there are places called "Lady Chapels" around the country, dedicated to the Virgin. The cultural overtones of the word are no doubt different in a South African context!
@jam4782 ай бұрын
that might be the origin of the word but it still carries with it a lot of classiest and sexist tones, at least with how I have experienced it throughout my life in the UK

I certainly think of them as Women's teams rather than Ladies teams. My sin I guess is in referring to them as Girls and equally I tend to refer to England Boys. A harder one to resist when they all look so young to me. 😊
@Elmakapelma2 ай бұрын
We all "girls" our hearts out, me too! I think we just need to strive for greater consideration, a quiet moment to reflect on what it is, that informs our word choices. No shame.
@Pete_T_M2 ай бұрын
@@Elmakapelma Indeed and on reflection I think the point I have to remember is it's not the intent, but the perception. I love the women's game; if I refer to "the girls" it's with affection and awe. That's my intent. The perception however can be that that is disparaging. Not something that applies to the boys. So I'll try and do better, not for those that know me but for those that don't

I agree with the ladies rugby vs women rugby debate. There is a TV advert knocking about at the moment with women athletes giving their all in their sports and smashing it. The sound track is this 50's song about good old fashioned ladies (possibly girls but the word girls to describe grown women has long been seen as belittling). Anyway, either way, the song track is chosen to directly conflict with the images, which supports what Elma is saying. The ad is showing the viewer that these women are powerful athletes. Ladies is just not a great description for women rugby players if you actually watch women's rugby. It's a wonky fit. Oh and laundry women, I have an anecdote about that. In the wonderful Wind in the Willows there was a washer woman who helps Toad escape from jail. In fact she masterminded the entire breakout. She wasn't a lady, she was far more, practical, resourseful and clever, and therefore a washer woman. Don't ask me why humans put a toad in jail for stealing a car. Don't ask me about the proportions of a toad driving a car. All the illustrations suggest that toad is at least 5ft5 in which case the washer woman is braver than me because I'd have legged it 😊

They fought for “Votes for Women” not ladies - considering the strong combative nature of rugby specifically ladies feels entirely inaccurate
@MartaComplex2 ай бұрын
Excellent point. As 'ladies' has particular connotations historically with behaviour that is demure, gentle and modest, it feels entirely alien to the strength and endurance manifested by rugby players. Not to mention retaining 'ladies' is increasingly out of step with other sports, where the term has long been replaced with 'women.' In women's football for instance the overwhelming majority of teams have made the change. Ditto cricket and I'm sure many others.
@nathanwtc7422 ай бұрын
Agreed. They certainly didn't fight for votes for girls either.
