I just watched it after becoming intrigued as to why the movie is so poorly received as well as loved, and I can say from my viewing that the film from a technical level is near perfect. The cinematography, the effects, the performances are all fantastic. The biggest fault of the movie is the writing and the pacing. Particularly, the way The Lone Ranger was written was just kinda baffling. He was written as a bumbling idiot and a jerk through most of the film, when it might've been more effective to at least make him somewhat clever. There are scenes where he almost gets himself killed by his stubbornness, when making him more clever might've added to the theme about violence and order. Plus when he abandons Tonto when they're both buried, even if it's for a joke, it's kinda like a punch in the gut to see him abandon Tonto after them bonding the whole film. It felt out of character. Secondly, the way the movie was paced was really iffy. They could've easily shaved a lot of the runtime off the movie without compromising much of the experience.

The Lone Ranger took its time and was incredibly long for a modern day movie especially considering this is a character that most kids now a days wouldn't give two shits about and you'd think they would want to make it a 2 hour explosion filled gun shooting wet dream but the fact that they don't is one of the reasons I love it. This isn't an action packed thrill ride of a movie all the way through because that's never what the Lone Ranger was supposed to be. The original series was always pretty calm and slow going with the occasional action or fight scene here and there and mainly focused on characters or story and I'm very glad this movie kept true to that.

While there are a few things that do seriously irk me about this movie (mostly that the Lone Ranger and Tonto don't have that same friendship like the original characters did), I really do appreciate the amount of dedication Gore Verbinski (who had made Rango prior to this, which I thought would be as good as that) had to make the movie look, sound, and feel as good as it did and try to be a fun, action packed, and occasionally harsh Western in the 21st Century, especially when it comes to the full scale steam locomotives.

@Shadowkey392Ай бұрын
4:15 I don’t think the score is mimicking anything. That’s actually how the original Finale of the William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini goes. It lengthened here not to mimic gunshots but rather because the score had to be made to fit the scene. To do so, part of it had to be extended, and that was the part that made the most sense. That’s it. Any resemblance to the gunfire would be coincidental since the composer wouldn’t have known in advance how the sound effects would sound.

Enjoyed your commentary. Not a big fan of westerns or action movies in general, although I enjoy a well made one. The movie overall was ok, but I could not agree more that the train chase must be one of the best action scenes ever. The fact that it could last so long and still have you totally enrapt and on the edge of your seat was amazing testament enough.. Although I think it is important to give a lot of the credit to Gioachino Rossini, who wrote the overture, and Franz Liszt, whose transcription so popularised it. It is one of the most enduring and evocative pieces of classical music ever. Initially designed to evoke military and battle themes in the William Tell opera, it has since evolved to represent the sound and sense of fast-paced cavalry and horsemanship, which it does unlike any other piece of music that I have ever heard in any genre.. The musicians who scored this movie put it to brilliant use here. Really a masterpiece of music and action cinematography all combined!!

Although I saw the film when it came out, despite its flaws I still liked it and couldn't understand why it was so bashed not only by critics but by all medias. Learning about the last 20 mins of the film has made me appreciate the movie alot more

Love this movie so much I bought the dvd so that I can watch it whenever I want to. This scene is epic and brilliant and reminds me that action heroes can do anything. I used to watch the tv series when I was a kid. A lot of imagination and hard work went into this . Thank you for the breakdown of how it all played out with the music. Wonderful!

Very very underrated movie. It has its fair share of flaws but that last 20 minutes was worth the price of admission.

Theres another interesting fact that would made the final train scene falling from the wreckage bridge, even more impressive, in reality the Locomotive boiler would explode as soon falling vertically at almost 90 degress, when the water in the boiler move flat to the top it would inmediately block the steam line causing a massive thermal explosion, it literally would destroy everything near to it, including all that silver and the rest of the bridge. that would be an amazing finale.

Yup, fabulous movie. I've watched it 5 times, in the years to come I will watch it 5 more times. It has so many classic scenes and no one could have done with Tonto what Johnny Depp did. The train chase scene at the end was one of the 10 best Hollywood scenes ever. I can't imagine why people didn't like it.

I like how everytime when Johnny depp plays a character he plays it so smart like literally everything there is something. He gets the ideas outside of it.

I love this movie so much. It really is so well-produced. The storyline isn't perfect--gets a bit weird--but you're right that it's a love letter to classic popcorn Westerns. Beautifully, beautifully done. And the cast is superb. All of them. Perfect.

Each time I watch this I find something new. Like how you absolutely cannot tell when they go from using the loop track to using the trucks for the filming. Side by side, trucks, chasing single file, track.

I always see this movie, as if we are watching what the is in the kid's imagination while tonto is telling his tale. Therefore all the crazy over the top and imposible action sequences made all the sense inside the movie. Its a great movie, well directed. And just like Jhon Carter from Mars, it was badly marketed.

Lone Ranger fan since I was a kid. Show, cartoons, movies, etc. The Disney version was just as unrealistic and over the top as the extravagant storylines back then. Loved every second of it!!!!!

One of the best character development in my opinion. He was a guy that only believes in fact and law. But now he accepts himself becoming someone he never thought will be. Just like he accepts the mask from Tonto earlier before.

Three years later and I’m still listening and studying this entire sequence out. Everything about it is insane. The fact they used actual scratch built “accurate” train props is phenomenal. And boy does the music slap hard, it really does do massive heavy lifting. Being a huge train nerd it’s an absolute jaw dropping heart pounding highly exciting train chase, and hands down the best train chase in a movie by far. No matter what people say about the movie as a whole, I hope they can at least find even the tiniest appreciation for this train finale. Easily my favorite train scene in a movie even after all the years this film came out. I do believe the train props are around to this day, albeit not in the best condition they should be.

Several weeks ago, our country celebrated the 150-year anniversary of the transcontinental railroad, an event that this movie paid loving homage to. Most notably, the "Jupiter" locomotive is a REAL locomotive, and the scene of two engines facing each other is one of the most iconic in American history. However, the depiction of the locomotive controls is downright Hillarious. Oh well. Still a fantastic movie.
